What an awesome rose garden. Variety 'Double Delight' has been one of my favorites for years - incredibly fragrant. Probably one of the most fragrant roses I've had over the years. Mass plantings of just about any plant are always striking.

Hey Scott! The best I've seen with the exception of the International Rose Test Garden in Portland, OR. Double Delight.....not only fragrant, but the colors of the petals is unusual as well. Hence, double delight! Mass plantings.....I agree. And 3,400 is a great number! Scott, as always, thank you for watching and I always look forward to your comments! Have a great weekend! Hi Mark! Thanks so much for showing us the gorgeous rose gardens, brought to us from a gorgeous host! :-) I actually live only 5 miles from Hershey and I still haven't seen those gardens as in depth as your video showed. (I'm a bad local!) Once the Canada/U.S. border restrictions are lifted, you really ought to see the Canadian Niagara Parks gardens in Niagara Falls, Ontario (my former stomping grounds). The rose gardens at the "School of Horticulture" are equally as beautiful (and larger, I think), and the gardens in the Parks cover the entire Falls area, along with greenhouses and the famous Floral Clock.

I'm watching this video late at night after work. The grass paths look so lush and soft. I can imagine it would feel great barefoot. Have you ever taken a nap in the grass? I worked at a flower shop once we had mostly Charlotte and spray roses. I learned the test rose heads by feel. If it feels like it has an egg inside it will last for a couple of weeks. If it mostly squeezes together it's blown.

Thank you for this visit, Mark. Most of those roses are wonderful at my eyes but those ones I prefer are old rustic roses and I think I saw some there. At my eyes they are nicer than the hybrid of tea roses and every of them have fragrance so far I know. Most of them or all of them got simple colours, I mean the robe of the flower isn't variegated. About roses, it's one of the rare things I'm conservative about. I particularly like the white and pale pink ones (a few dirty pale pink). As I live in Montreal, those rustic roses are tougher in this climate too. Have a nice week end, Mark.

Any chance you can take us on a field trip to see the changing of the leaves in your area. So many areas in the United States don't get that experience. Thanks for this incredible tour Mark! Spectacular gardens! So many diverse and beautiful varieties! I liked Lasting Peace as well. Great size and beautiful full and richly colored blossoms. And really great interview and interesting backstory on the gardens. It's incredibly difficult to successfully maintain roses in the mid Atlantic between heat and humidity, Japanese beetles, fungal diseases, and soil conditions. They must work incredibly hard. And older roses seem to get tired. It sounds like they're probably constantly cycling them and they cut them down to just above the graft each year. I wonder if they have their own greenhouses for growing and grafting them. I guess you'll have to do a video on growing roses now. Lol. Have a great weekend!
@marksgardenlife59713 жыл бұрын
Hi John! The tour....it was all my pleasure! I'm glad you enjoyed it. Lasting Piece....One of the stand outs as well as the orange shade where I filmed the introduction and the end of the video. The interview.......thank you. It really is tough doing interviews because you can only make them so long in most cases or your viewers loose interest, so I appreciate the compliment. Mid Atlantic and roses....you are so right! At Hershey, they have the perfect situation. Full sun all day and that hillside has a constant breeze being on a steep hill. The roses are deadheaded two times a week and yes, they do cut them down right above the graft each year. Greenhouses.....no, they don't. That would be nice, wouldn't it! I think I may in time put a smaller glass greenhouse (I know, you'd think the 2 acres of them already would be enough! lol) in when the new service buildings for the house complex are built. The building going up for the boilers for the house will always have extra heat that will be wasted and I thought I'd build a smaller glass house off that and grow some cutting roses in it along with other things and take advantage of the extra heat. I'd like to grow some orchids in it as well. John, I appreciate you watching and of course, I appreciate your comments too! You have a great weekend too! Best, -Mark

Beautiful tour of the roses Mark! Would love to know how they get their roses to stay so healthy. I struggle living here in the east with the numerous fungal diseases and Japanese beetles. I haven't given up yet and seeing these roses inspires me to try some new varieties. Thanks again for an interesting and well done video-- you are a natural.

Hi Robert! I'm glad you enjoyed the tour. Thank you! Healthy roses....I would say between irrigation, keeping on a spray program, a feed program and dead-heading 2 times a week they keep them in that condition. Of course, always pick the varieties with the high ARS ratings and especially pay attention to the ones with the least leaf issues which you can find in the ratings. Thank you for watching and of course, I appreciate your very kind words. Have a great upcoming week! All my very best, -Mark

great video Mark...i cant understand why more gardens dont have Old Garden Roses..OGR and David Austin roses...i have 3 hybrid teas and ONLY because they are super fragrant and a few floribundas that are fragrant..but unless a rose has at least a medium or stronger scent its not coming home with me and has the live well in zone 6a...i want shrubs that flower and smell great...i had over 1,700 roses back home on 3/4 of an acre..mine was a collectors garden, so i had maybe 10 repeats then then only 2 plants. i planted roses in family beds...gallicas, albas, damasks, centifolia, moss, portlands, bourbons, hybrid perpetuals, hybrid rugosas and a few early hybrid teas plus several climbers...now i have to be very limited in my new little yard so mostly Austins and OGR and a few climbers...ill send you some pics Mark...happy roseing my friend!

Hi Rourke! I'm glad you enjoyed. Thank you! Old Garden Roses.....I really have no idea. 1,700 roses! Now, that's a lot of roses! A lot of work! I'd love to see pictures of the old and the new. What are your favorites currently? If you don't mind, email me at Marksgardenlife@gmail.com. Haven't there been a lot of improvements in roses in the last 30 years as far as disease resistance, etc.? Lasting Peace was my favorite at Hershey. It had everything to make it a perfect rose. I would like to put in a large rose garden here, but it's going to have to be on high ground here. The grounds around the house are all low and the river is part of that landscape and pretty much all summer, there is a dew every morning from the high moisture content in the air at night. I do have an area that is full sun all day and around 40 feet higher elevation than the yard and that's where I'm thinking of doing a rose garden. If you do send me a list of your current favorites, I'd love to hear what your favorites were in your old rose garden too. Rourke, thank you for watching and of course, I appreciate your comments too. Have a great Sunday! All my very best, -Mark

Mark, Wonderful, unhurried, informative presentation. You ask questions, listen to reply and share knowledge. Hershey Roses are beautiful but some of the combination colours a little unfashionable over in the UK. A 1970's colour palette. David Austin are considered the gold standard here with many jewel and pastel colours. Sure your green fingers would create the most fragrant, beautiful rose garden. David Austin 'Charles Darwin' might be your yellow rose. Keep up the good work Capability Brown :)

Unfortunately, there is really no hope of successfully maintaining roses up here in the California high desert. But makes me a little homesick for the East Coast where I generally grew up. Thanks for the tour young man! :D And a shout out to your Camera person by-the-way.

@@marksgardenlife5971 Unfortunately the desert is so fickle. Just a few feet and the conditions change from what will grow or not. But I've had things grow that shouldn't do well at all here as well. Without more constant care than I'd like , I might be able to grow roses, but were are also in a drought, so that negates a lot of plants that I'd consider. I'm a gardner that loves to help establish a plant, but then it's on it's own basically aside from irragation and simple maintenance. Desert planting is certainly a challange. We had a lovely little summer house in Cape Cod, it's something I really miss. Happy Sunday to you as well.

are roses difficult to grow in the mid-Atlantic? I would think the climate similar to Ohio and they were easy enough to grow there. Down here in south Florida, there are very few roses that are suited for growing long term and most of the ones that are grow large, are not suited for cutting and the blooms are rather short lived. Still, Old Blush earns a spot in my yard, despite its imposing size and short lived blooms, because it is nearly always in bloom and it is fragrant enough for it to carry on the breeze.

Did anyone at Hersey’s Rose garden share information on how they avoid Rose Rosette disease?
@marksgardenlife59713 жыл бұрын
It's a disease that's been around for years which transmits by a mite. The mite prefers the softer, young foliage found at the end of the canes at the top of the plants. If you see the signs of it on a single cane, immediately cut the cane all the way down to the ground and dispose of it. Dip you pruners in a solution of 10% bleach water after cutting infected cane. If several canes are infected, dig up the plant including the entire root system and dispose of the entire plant.
