Just got to the end of the vlog, where you're talking about reading Kostova's The Historian, and wow, that brought back memories! I read it when it was first released, and there are so many scenes that still stick with me today. It did take me forever to read, and it's not all perfect, but it was one of my favorites from that year. I very rarely hear people talk about it now! I hope you enjoy it!

I've self-published 4 novels, and I can so relate to the feeling of "launch day" being anti-climactic. I launch a book, and then I have to go on with my day like it's nothing special. I don't have enough of a following to make a launch day worthwhile, and I loathe marketing. So I've also adopted a low effort approach to launches. I do it, I have a nice dinner out with my family so at least I don't have to cook, and then I let myself relax for a bit. I don't plan on becoming a unicorn (and honestly, I think the attention would make me freeze up), but I do wish the launch would feel a bit . . . more. This will be the first year I haven't published since 2020, and it's partially because I'm struggling with a "why bother" mentality right now. I've really appreciated your vlogs, Andrea, because they're reminding me that we write because we love it, because it feels good to tell a story and to know that at least one other person might read it and enjoy it. So, congrats on #8! May there be many more!

Love this! I’m almost done with my first fiction book. It’s taken me 5 years due to illness which took me out of writing (and reading 😭) for 3 of those years. I’m excited it’s almost done but I don’t have high expectations. I know from a marketing perspective (ive studied marketing ) I need more books. And that’s ok, it’s the business side of it. I have to put on my logical hat and see the books as products. It’s hard to switch hats though. And you’re so right, it’s a marathon not a sprint. Congratulations on your new book 📕 🎉 very happy for you ❤️

Sorry to hear you were feeling not so good during this time - hopefully you are feeling better now that it’s been a few days. Fingers crossed you find a new doctor soon that truly listens and works with you. ❤ I’m excited to tell you that the paper copy of your book arrived today, this evening in fact. It was so fun to hold it as you did in this vlog haha. I paged through and saw your dedication and that was so sweet. 🥹 It looks beautiful. (It was printed in Bolton Ontario, at least that’s what’s printed on the back so I think that’s where it was printed!) The other exciting thing - the book you’re reading, The Historian! That is one of my favourite reads and you’re right - it’s long and winding, but a great journey. I loved how they spent so much time in libraries and researching. 😄I’ll be interested to hear your thoughts on it.

I was honestly really surprised the first time it happened. It felt like such a massive thing publishing a book but the emotional response is not quite what I expected. I might talk more about it in a future video, but it's a very strange feeling and such a mix of emotions. I'm sure it's the same with any big creative endeavor. I used to get similar feelings when I worked in theatre. Months of hard work and then a weekend of shows and then it was over and you're left feeling a little like, "that's it?" You wouldn't trade the experience for all the memories and the feeling of accomplishment, but it still feels a little like your world was changed but everyone else is going about business as usual.

I've got two books "out in the world" and I barely market them at all... I've made a whopping $8 in sales since I published my first book in Spring 2023... So yeah low effort it is. I put all my effort into writing... 📖📚
@AndreaJSeverson2 күн бұрын
As writers I think it's easy to put all our effort into writing. That's what feels comfortable. Between now and my next book release I want to try to figure out how to get better at marketing without it taking up more time than writing does.

This is my first time here for a book launch, and I'm really enjoying watching it all unfold :) Can you tell me the difference for you between an ebook purchase and someone reading on Kindle Unlimited? I recently bought and read A Brave Start as an ebook. I've been thinking about starting a Kindle Unlimited subscription and wondered if it helps you a lot more if I read the next one as a Kindle purchase rather than on Kindle Unlimited?
@AndreaJSeverson3 күн бұрын
I’m so glad you’re enjoying seeing the process! It’s fun vlogging and sharing it all with you. And great question. I get asked this a lot. Typically authors make a lot more from sales than from KU page reads. Like, I might earn $1-$1.50 for someone reading a whole book on KU compared to $4 royalties from a sale. Not every purchase gets the highest royalty amount, it depends on a few different factors, but overall I make at least a few dollars more from sales than page reads. BUT…I always tell people read it however is most affordable for you. Someone who reads it on KU but who then leaves a positive review on Amazon and tells their friends about it is so valuable and can work out better than someone who buys it but then never reads it, doesn’t review it, or tell anyone about it. ☺️

Imperfect was one of my words of the year for this year, so being imperfect but doing the best I can is definitely the goal. :)
@Mandy_James3 күн бұрын
Progress--not perfection. Completion--not comparison. Perfectionism and comparison--"that way madness lies." AMEN! Even though I'm not sure if I'll ever publish my books, it is helpful to watch the process. It takes the fear of the unknown out of it and shows that the process is actually attainable and not impossible if it's something I ever decide to do. It's calming, even if you're worrying and being "in your head", because it shows a step-by-step process others can go through to do the things you are doing. You've done well and it's perfectly alright to take some time to rest. I hope you were able to get a good night's sleep and are feeling better by now. Btw, you were right--I did finish the book Monday night. That boardroom scene had me giggling. So awesome. Then how the romantic storyline resolved--well done. Well done, my friend. It did not disappoint. :) Overall: I think Celeste is a far stronger person than she ever dreamed she could be at the story's start, while Jon's flaws and humanity were on full display, (there were moments I wanted to give him a swift kick in the a**) but it only managed to make their lives and relationship feel more real. For the record--I still say he's the best. I don't think I've ever met someone (in life or in a book) who wanted so badly to support all the people in his life as much as Jon does. Most of us can only aspire to be that kind of support and cheerleader for our loved ones. Just sayin'. I haven't posted a review yet but I definitely will soon. I LOVED it. So looking forward to future vlogs. It's a marathon, not a sprint--keep that in mind and you'll find your writing rhythm again in no time. :)

Mandy, I could honestly cry reading your response to the book, I'm so happy and so relieved. I love this story so much and I just want people to enjoy it as well. I already want to read it again and I normally don't feel that way by the time it launches. So thank you for loving Celeste and Jonathan so much. :) And I'm so glad this video resonated with you. This is going to sound sad, but for me and my books, I do feel like it is anticlimactic and the whole writing and publishing process is also anticlimactic. I don't really have a hype team or people that are making my writing feel like an accomplished. I know that it is an accomplishment but to me it feels like a normal day and just a hobby that I am doing for myself and nobody seems to be enjoying it. I didn't want this to sound like a pity party, but I will say that I am happy for you and your release, and I will be here to support you. Congrats and keep up the great work!

I totally understand how you feel. Launch day never lives up to the expectations I have in my head, so with each one I've tried to lower the expectations and just try to have fun and do something special for myself. I think when you're an indie author, especially a small indie without a huge following, it does feel anticlimactic compared to what we think it's like for other bigger authors. But I truly think this really is the norm for most of us. Thank you for watching and for sharing your experience. :)

Avi--that bingo card is EVERYTHING! haha...love it! I jumped into my email as soon as I was done with work on Friday just for your update and--yeee!!!! Immediate purchase. Haha. It's fabulous! I'm at Ch. 17 and LOVING it. Jonathan is still the best (even if I do want to give him a good shake at the moment) and I've just grown to adore Celeste even more. I won't say more because I don't want to give anything away, but--dang girl, you had NO reason to be worried this book wouldn't live up to the others. NONE. Well done. And thank you, thank you, thank you for hitting publish because it means now I'm able to be curled up with an awesome story. You deserve all the pomp and circumstance today. Imagine me out here in the world pulling a total Lillian style celebration with champagne and fireworks and the lot. Launch day is a day to celebrate all your hard work! So proud of you. You deserve to be so happy! Please, please--FEEL THE LOVE. We all support you and what you're doing. Okay, I'm off to finish my work today so I can curl up in front of the wood stove in my fuzzy socks, hot tea in hand, and get back into this book. I'm totally walking that line between wanting to totally binge read and wanting to go slow enough that I get to really enjoy and appreciate it. My husband questions why it matters since I'll "just finish it and start right back at the beginning anyway". Sigh. MEN. Haha. He does have a point...but don't ever tell him that. Grab a bottle of bubbly tonight lady, and kick back and enjoy the fruit of your labors. You deserve it. :)
