Can you recommend good brands of pedal harps? I think I want to begin my learning with one of those.

Excellent. For composers, an easy way to memorize the pedals is Did Columbus Bring Enough Food To Go to America. Or DCB left - EFGA right.

Get 36 strings if you are buying a lever harp, fully levered.

I have very limited musical knowledge, but since C flat is the same as a B natural, is there an advantage to having a pedal that can change the C string, to a B, as well as having a B string? (Same for F down to E). I hope this question makes sense.

Hi Zuzanna! I just discovered you and am really enjoying and learning a lot from your videos. 😊 ❤ You are so detailed and have a very sweet personality. I would not mind having you for my harp teacher one bit! I have a question. I am a beginner and am taking an online course with Christy Lynn Marias. I'm really enjoying it but I'm wondering about a couple of things. I'm just now finding that some of the pieces have fingering that I wonder is necessary...for instance, a couple of pieces have a repeated note where they want me to use my thumb, then my first finger for the same note. I find it easier just to use my thumb twice! Lol. It sounds smoother than the way they have the fingering. Is it okay to change fingering if what's written in isn't working well for you?

Hi! Nice video! I found this on a book: "I should point out that the disk mechanism of the 47-string pedal harp typically does not extend to the high G and the contrabass D and C. (In fact, the lowest two bass strings on any size pedal harp do not have a disk mechanism.) These strings must be manually retuned and the harpist must stand to do it. Therefore, the composer should consider these strings to be permanently fixed in pitch in the natural position, not capable of any semitone alteration." Is this affirmation true?

You don’t need any of those things. Most people buy and have the harp shipped to them. Hardly anyone buys a harp locally. As for learning, there are so many online options. There are video classes: How to Harp, Learning the Harp, Harp-School, OAIM, Udemy, etc. Plus many well-known teachers offer lessons via Zoom.

I live in Hawaii and most of the music stores only sell ukeleles. Do you know if you can rent a harp and have it sent? People get married here so I have a feeling that there may be some harpists here.

Don't play harp myself, but does it matter where you pluck the string for the note? That middle c, red string, would it matter if you plucked it on top/bottom vs in the middle like you did in the video?

Thank you so much for the insight, this was very instructive. I'm a pianist, but the harp always has been an instrument that fascinates me. Despite the all the great explanations though, I still can't help but ask myself why there has to be so many pedals, and why they each have to change the pitch of the strings 3 different ways. Enharmonic equivalents exist, so the mechanism seems so much more complex to me than it really needs to be, at least to me. If you only had 5 pedals instead of 7, with each pedal altering the pitch only 2 different ways instead of 3, you'd still have access to all the chromatic notes ! Instead of moving the pedal to reach C-flat, why not just pluck the B string ? I'm assuming all of this might have something to do with the key you're in, but I'd still love to see you go in depth in this topic ! Thanks for the awesome videos.

Thank you. That was very interesting. Because I am self-taught, I developed a bad habit which has resulted in strain in my left wrist. I think I can cure this by changing my posture, but that means that I will not see the strings the way I used to. So I think I must learn sight reading. Do you have a video on how to sight-read?

Cute and informative video! Why is your channel called this btw? I find ledger lines fairly common in harp music... probably more so than piano for a given level of expertise? I haven't been playing long but it seems like a piece is likely to end with a few octaves of divided arpeggio, a scary 1-5-8-10 chord, or a glissando. All the better, more opportunities to practice :)

I wish I hadn't seen this. You've removed most of the mystery and almost made it dangerously accessible. Now I'll be watching Craigslist and estate sales hoping to find a used pedal harp. It's got similarities to the chromatic harmonica in that you can get 3 notes out of each string, where in a harmonica, you can get 3 or 4 notes out of each hole. It's got to be great for the brain.

Thank you for making all these videos! I've found your channel a while ago, and now I am finally play The Little Fountain on a lever harp. The problem I have encountered is that my fingers can't play evenly, or they can't keep playing evenly after a while. I've tried the dotted rhythm practise (which I am quite used to when I play the piano as a kid), but I am not sure how much it's helping. Maybe I just need more time?

My band director asked me if I would be interested in learning harp for a competition piece. Definitely stressful for a very average high school percussionist. I have seen so many videos about the basics of harp but this one is the most helpful by far. Explained in a way that is easy for everyone to understand, whether they are a musician or not. Thank you for making such an informative video :)
