I'd argue the real father of psych pop in perth was Marty (or Mardi) Picasso who's 1980s band Picasso twins (Look up "Mardi Picasso Pop go the Mardies" on youtube) had a huge influence on the more arty fringes of the indy rock scene. Marty , an english expat who brought over a huge influence from the london psych pop scene of the 70s and 80s, lost his battle with cancer about a decade but he was in my opinion a huge influence thats been terribly neglected in histories of perth psychedelic. Oh, and to blow my own trumpet a bit, give Stargoon's Small Explosions a listen. Not strictly psych, but its what people keep calling us and Marty was a bit of mentor to me and we do try and keep his legacy alive.

I remember seeing the band open for Jedediah at the Murdoch University tavern in the late 90s. Then I saw them at the Grosvenor Backroom on their EP launch. I videoed that show. Saw the brand plenty of times over the years.

Loved seeing their progression from Sweater to Black Fingernails Red Wine. Wouldn’t mind seeing another album from them, we’ve had new albums from Jebediah and Grinspoon this year who have just become nostalgia acts at this point just like the Eskies have. They don’t have anything to lose.

Cool feature, being from Perth saw them a lot of times between 04 to 06, even got to see them do the BFNRW album launch at Amplifier Bar, it was broadcast live on Nova, you had to win tickets to go. Still have the recording and ticket somewhere.

Pretty sure that whilst the Baby Animals lineup was mostly from Perth, they were never based here. Dave Lesley was from Sydney where they debuted and gigged around Sydney as Woody's Heroes before changing their name; they certainly didn't relocate to Sydney as Baby Animals because they couldn't make it in Perth.

God, there are some doosies here and a very poor representation of the era in the 60's and 70's. Some of Australia's greatest artists / songs that paved the path for those here seemingly do not rate a mention. The great Frank Ifield who was first to chart at #1 IN ENGLAND. Ditto The Seekers. Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs. Kevin Johnson whose anthem "Rock and Roll......" is one of the most covered songs internationally. "I'll be gone" like Mike Rudd and Spectrum...

Neon ballroom is also my favourite Silverchair album but I would have to say "petrol and chlorine" and "cemetery" was their first glimpse at a different sound

Quick aside: I don’t think what Johns went through could be called “teasing”. He legit got his ass beat. The most tragic part of the whole thing - the complete disintegration of those relationships that spanned decades. Ppl do change and not many of us have friends into adulthood that we had when we were kids, but their’s are a specific set of circumstances.

Top 30 Australian songs of all time....depends of your criteria? Sales, chart position, lyrics, politics. For example. A song like Great Southern Land by Flowers ( Icehouse ) sounds very Aussie, while Can't get you out my head by Kylie doesnt. Though I like both! Personally I would have had Sherbet rather than just Daryl, maybe Howzat🤷‍♂️ Other bands I would have liked to see are... The Reels, Quasimodos Dream The Sunnyboys, Alone with You Skyhooks, Living in the 70s Hoodoo Gurus, My Girl... Or maybe something newer by You Am I, Birds of Tokyo, Savage Garden, Sia.....soooo many to choose! As you pointed out at the end, there were lots you missed out! 🤷‍♂️🙏

Great list. I'd add: One Word - Baby Animals and Goosebumps - Christie Allen. INXS played their first gigs in Perth (as The Farris Brothers) and Hoodoo Gurus, ACDC and LRB has foundations as 'Perth bands'.

Good list. As a child of the 80s we get caught up in the nostalgia of it all, after all was a great time for Oz Rock. But we are a little blind to recognise some more contemporary stuff that is superb. I’d argue that many of the songs are not the best from the respective bands but thats kind of immaterial. Would love to see Eagle Rock and Because I Love You in there, as well as Alone with You Tonight from The Sunnyboys and my guilty pleasure the Bad Moon Rising cover from The Reels!

I saw the Sleepy Jackson as the support act for Fourth Floor Collapse, who, at the time (late 90s?) were the hot new local band that all the “destined for greatness” buzz was about. That didn’t quite pan out.
