Does TGTB teach reading well? Never used it but as a soon mom of six about to have a C-section I need something very simple to teach my six year old to read that is easy for me as the teacher but also effective. I had considered All About Reading but it’s just more than I can take on right now.

@@beachgurl788 I can understand that you are looking for something that is both effective in teaching your child to read AND doesn’t take a lot of prep work for the teacher. Short answer: I would recommend this program to anyone! (And I’m not sponsored by TGTB). Longer answer: As a former reading specialist in the public school system I would evaluate each child’s current ability and then move forward. TGTB has placement tests to match your child’s level to purchase (or download) the correct level. Here’s the link: www.goodandbeautiful.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Language-Arts-Course-Level-Placement-Test_June24.pdf I think TGTB is an excellent option because it’s open & go. It’s free as a pdf on their website. This curriculum has already taught one of my kids to read and now I’m using the same program for my Kindergartener.

Thank you for sharing all this! I did the assessment and my six year old is ready for the level k of TGTB. So that seems the best place to start! I am not a reading specialist, but I am a firm believer in not rushing reading and letting the child learn at their own pace.😉

@@BellaDonna0912 okay NYC is slightly different….this is from HSLDA and I will also attach the link: For families who live in New York City (within Brooklyn, Bronx, Manhattan, Queens, or Staten Island), this notice, and all homeschooling correspondence, should instead be submitted to the New York City Department of Education’s Office of Home Schooling. Additionally, HSLDA members should contact us if withdrawing a child from a New York City public school in the middle of the school year, as there could be special considerations of which to be aware. Because of COVID protocols, the Office of Home Schooling has not been processing paperwork that has been mailed in (either at all or on a very delayed basis). I noticed the same thing. But we had such a struggle with math in 7th grade that it would not hurt for us to shore up that foundation a bit. It's possible she will understand it more completely with another instructor. Also, we ended up taking a couple of months off for summer. I gave my daughter an "assessment" to see how much has evaporated. I've decided the review wouldn't hurt. She should be able to move through that material quickly.

I love and appreciate scripture in curriculum. However, writers interpretation of gospel and their thoughts I do not. How much references to our Saviour is there or interpretations of Jesus and his ministry? More how much is interpretation of Jesus and the gospel within the text. I am not worried about the end section, ‘thinking biblically’ extensions because that can easily done or missed. I think spreading this out over 2 years looks a good idea. If done over 2 years, how many lessons a week did you do? Did you find it better doing X no of lessons a week, like 2/3 lessons a week, but spread over 5 days. I also in a fb group and lot of people said 3 hours to do everything in a lesson?

@jessicajones611 well... we don't do all of the things every time, so I can't say for sure. We are not doing this exact unkt right now. We are doing "Our Spangled Story" which is the elementary American History. My kids love to do the unit projects. They always do the workbook page, but they usually do that while I am reading. We do review questions orally as a group discussion. I also frequently pause to look up a picture of something to explain, or add some of my own commentary. We spend anywhere from 20 mins to 40 mins per lesson, I'd say. Not including the suggested read aloud. Our whole morning basket includes a bible story, memory verse, devotional, 10-15 mins of a read aloud, and either science or history. And everything combined usually runs us about an hour. I have 4 kids, so I have to keep my curriculums and my time realistic and manageable. This has been working great. The projects are also simple enough to actually do. Also, for reference, my school age kids are 8 and 10.

My kids in kindergarten and first grade finished the preschool level of TGTB in kindergarten, worked through the kindergarten prep book, and were partway through with the kindergarten book at the end of kindergarten. One could fluently read at this point, and the other one was still slowly sounding out words. Good luck!

So nice to find a fellow NY homeschool family. We have a homeschool graduate, and are finishing up 10th, 7th, 5th, and pre-k. We love Notgrass too!
