A fascinating video. Thank you. Although I have seen great Blue Herons many times in this part of Northern California, I had no idea that they formed large rookeries..love your channel

A rookery I saw recently on an island in the St-Lawrence seaway (at the border between Ontario and Quebec) seemed exceptionally active and healthy. There seemed to be over 20 nests with many parents sitting on their clutches observed. I can't imagine many land predators crossing to the island in the strong currents, and that is probably why the colony is established there.

We have nighthawks here in NE Washington. I've been hearing them every evening and wondering about the booming sound- which I finally realized was actually coming the same bird! It was great to hear how and why they make that sound. Thank you!!

So many empty nests, how sad 😢. Here in my region of 🇨🇭 I also saw nests disappearing year after year ... We have no racoons nor Bald Eagles. I explain it with falling trees (forest industry cuts a lot) or habitat invaded by more and more human visitors 😢. Here 😢

7-12 years ago, there were many such heron nests along the Maple River in south-central Michigan. C,ear up on the tops of trees. I’d seen heron families in Canada, but had never seen them here. The nests have all gone now, and the birds have moved. Raccoons are a rapacious scavenger, one of - if not the worst - wrecker out there. They leave a trail of wreckage behind themselves. The only good aspect of pythons in Florida is that raccoons are disappearing. Courtesy of Half Vast Flying

I've seen the same thing at a couple heron rookeries near my house in Wisconsin. Some years they seem full and busy, other years they are empty.

I saw one in my neighborhood on the Pamlico River when I first moved here 8 years ago, it was dead because it's beak got trapped shut as it must have pierced the piece of latex glove that prevented its bill from opening. It must have starved to death! It was so cool looking, the first one I'd ever seen. It was at the bottom of my short driveway. A week later I saw the second one I'd ever seen. It was also dead. Probably the first one's mate, I suspect. It wasn't a victim of anything deadly, apparently, though it had been a very cold stretch of weather. Damn people who litter. Who wound have thought a Playtex living glove would/ could become a deadly weapon? Now I always pick up any trash left by slobs and litterers whenever I can. Especially plastic and rubber products. There ought to be a law against that sort of thing. Oh yeah, that's right, there is. Lots of real slobs in Bath, NC. Probably everywhere in the US, I reckon! Oh yeah, and I've never seen any since. Probably the last two in the area.

My brother and I have watched the tree sparrow nest in one of our bird boxes. It appeared that they had several broods over the summer of2024. We have enjoyed watching them through our back windows and even from our backyard. They certainly show no fear of us anymore. I sat on our deck and watched the first brood fly all around the tree with the nest box in it. I loved it. I certainly hope to see more this year as well as next year.

If the yellow headed blackbirds can shove around a red winged blackbird, they are indeed in the ambush mode. Red winged blackbirds attack - and drive away osprey! Courtesy of Half Vast Flying

It sounds similar to a red winged blackbird. Birds, in general, are easier to find and watch than most other animals. They call our attention with both visible AND audible display. Others, say, foxes, muskrat, wolves, mink, etc are less observed. And, birds seldom attack with fang and claw. So far, I have never been attacked by a bird. I have come dangerously close to serious problems with vultures while on motorcycle, and another time, on taking off with a plane. Vultures are dumb, AND they don’t give a darn. But not much can be expected from something that eats rotten meat on purpose. sigh Courtesy of Half Vast Flying

I have seen these birds at my local wetlands. To me, their song sounded like someone strangling a vacuum cleaner 😂. I noticed how the Yellowheads dominated one area of the wetlands, while the redwings dominated the rest of it. Definitely an interesting bird to see and hear.

We have been developing a homesite on a piece of beautiful land we bought last year and I’ve heard a bird for the last couple months that I have not been able to see but it’s song is distinctive and I’ve told my husband so many times about it and that I’d love to know what kind of bird it was. I woke up this morning and upon waking heard the word meadowlark. I had no idea what that was so I googled it and low and behold, I found the mystery caller here. I love the maker of heaven and earth who loves us so much and cares about every detail of our lives-even the little things. May you be blessed today.

I have started absolutely adoring pigeons recently, I feed them on my window throughout the day and go out into the streets to feed them by hand 2-3 times a day. I swear they are just so intelligent, I went out the other day like 15 miles away from where I usually go and there was this one pigeon that came and sat by me which was adorable, I didn't have any food for it at the time but it kept shifting itself closer to me so gradually as if it knew I was a friend
