Extremely well done photo journalism of the Caribbean Princess. Just enough narration to move us through the segments. Background music well done and not overpowering. @ThePortLowdown13 күн бұрын
It was a pretty cool port. The captain said he had the hardest time docking at this port due to choppy seas. I find that often in Caribbean ports, since many docks are directly facing the ocean and not protected by a larger pier or other barrier. In fact, we've had a few ports canceled for the same reason. It's a bummer when that happens, but better safe. Hope you find your way here!

Did you need Turkish currency ?
@ThePortLowdown26 күн бұрын
In the big city, most cabbies will take Euros (but not credit cards). Most stores will also take Euros, but we used credit cards for purchases. If you want slightly less of a price mark up, or if you're in farther afield areas or towns, you'll need the local currency. For our short time here, spare Euros and credit cards were fine.

Somehow, it beautifully evolves from the 1994 Statendam. There are a few new areas but it seems to retain the same areas as the original. And somehow HAL has managed to eschew the beige/taupe muted neutral craze that others are doing and have rich colors all over. Good to see this.
@ThePortLowdown26 күн бұрын
That's true. All the HAL ships we've been on so far have a similar feel.

Thanks for the outstanding summary and pre-taste of Cartagena. You did a lot to iron out the wrinkles of our anxiety on a city we know only from the the adventures of Joan Wilder and Juan Valdez. One question: Do we need to acquire Colombian pesos for taxis and tips? Or do U.S. Dollars suffice, as in most Mexican port cities?
@ThePortLowdown26 күн бұрын
Just for tips and taxi, US dollars are fine (be sure to have smaller bills handy). This was our only port stop in Columbia, so getting local pesos wasn't practical for us. On our food tour, all the locations were included, which made it easier. But to shop on your own locally, it's better to have local pesos. Restaurants usually take credit cards.

Another great video! Great informative explanation on what to do in town if you are not going on a tour. We considered going to Dynjandi Waterfall, but none of the ship excursions seemed right for us. Plus, as I'm sure you noticed and probably pointed out in another video, all the ship excursions in Iceland were expensive, more so that probably anwhere else we have toured. We ended up going to Surureyri, a wonderful, picturesque fishing village. Sudureyri was incredibly scenic! The drive thru the 3-way tunnel, including the one-way section was fascinating and interesting. We had an outstanding young guide and helpful bus driver, who both added greatly to the information provided with the tour. Since it was Saturday, there was very little activity in the village, which can be both good and bad. It would have been nice to have seen more activity with regard to the fishing, but it was so relaxing to walk through the village at our own pace with a guide who had so much to share, as he grew up in this town and was very proud. We got some great photos here, and thoroughly enjoyed this visit. When we got back to the ship, we just decided that we needed to get a bite to eat and relax before crossing the Arctic Circle. If I would have seen your video before trip, I would have done more. But, we were there in July and I suspect you actually came after us. Thanks, again. -Marty

We were there in June, so we were actually before you. We boarded in Copenhagen with Holland on the 29th and did two back to back cruises. We did 2 months total that summer, and we did a Mediterranean cruise with Princess for a few weeks prior. All for the channel. Quite a whirlwind and I now have a mountain of footage to edit, LOL. Anyway, so glad you had so much fun! We really enjoy off the beaten track destinations and that village sounds really cool. Hope you're going on more sailings soon!

@@ThePortLowdown After we got home from Amsterdam in August, we went back cruising: taking a Canada-New England cruise from Quebec City to Boston on the Zuiderdam, only 7 days. This was such an unexpected pleasure, greatly exceeding our expectations. Plus, it was nice to have a shorter, less costly flights to both ports. In fact, I watched your Hallifax Port video, again, it was so good and right on the money. Our tour in Hallifax took us to an extended Peggy's Cove visit, around the lighthouse the the amazingly beautiful fishing village. We did take the time to stop and get a "Peggys Dogs" hotdog there. Then, when we got back to Hallifax, we had a 30-45 minute stop at the Public Gardens, and as you noted in your video, it was well worth the time. Then, we only had time for a driveby of the Citadel, but I'm glad we did at least that. That was our favorite tour of the cruise. Our 3rd cruise this year was in February from Sydney, Australia all around New Zealand, ending in Auckland on the Noordam. Another great trip. I totally understand your "mountain of videos" to edit. But, you do a great job editting, so much better than most creators on KZbin. I have thousands of photos to go through. Both, my wife and I each create our own Shutterfly Photobooks of our adventures, and we've been doing that for a long, long time even back when I worked for Kodak in the ninties. I do try to take some videos, and I keep trying to force myself to do more. Finally, we have 3 cruises booked for next year, and 2 big ones for 2026, a 14-day Circle Iceland, and a 21-day Mediterranean. Hopefully, we'll get to do all of those, and maybe even more. Keep up the good work! -Marty

@@ThePortLowdown Interesting, the Australia-New Zealand trip was the lowest price. We had just gotten back from our Panama Canal cruise on NCL (too much chaos), and I started searching for the ANZ trip. After a few weeks, late on a Saturday night, this 12 day cruise in a Signature Suite popped up at $1500 pp, so we jumped on it. Then, a couple of weeks before the cruise, we got an upgrade email that we also took advantage of: Neptune Suite total cost less than $2000 pp - unbelievable. I wish I knew the “trick”. And, when I tried to get the additional onboard credit for being a Carnival stockholder, I got the following reply, “Unfortunately, we are unable to apply the shareholder benefit due to the fare your reservation is booked. The shareholder benefit is not combinable with casino offers, reduced-rate promotions or guests traveling under an employee, interline, or friend and family type fares.” Again, not sure how that happened.
@ThePortLowdownАй бұрын
For HAL, special rates don't apply to shareholder benefits. That's standard. As far as going there someday, it's really about getting the schedule to agree with ours.

Again, really enjoyed the video. You do a great job explaining so many things in and about the port. When we were in Akureyri in July, we did a ship excursion to Godafoss Waterfall, (absolutely spectacular!), the Laufas Folk Museum with the turf farmhouse and country church, (again, a great stop), a scenic drive through the older part of Akureyri, and ended at the Botanical Gardens (small but very enjoyable). We really enjoyed the excursion. We got back to the ship with about 2 hours before "all aboard" time. I wanted to go out and explore the town somemore and take more pictures (photography is our thing), but my wife was too tired from the long day, so I was off on my own. I. walked past the HOF Cultural and Conference Center twice, but did not go in. It looks like a great place to start the exploration or town. I walked thru the main town almost down to the Botanical Gardens, then down to the waterfront, all the way back to the cruise terminal. The thermal spa experience at the Forest Lagoon that you showed look great. Too often, we find these places either too intimadating or just too difficult to deal with changing clothes, showering, etc. This place looked great, and we will definitely go there the next time we are in Akureyri. Thanks again. -Marty

Wow, thanks so much for sharing your travels! I was wondering about trying a rental car next time. There's lots of places to explore beyond the town. BTW, did try the hot dogs? I had something similar in Bergen.

@@ThePortLowdown No, I did not try the hotdogs but wish I would have, but I was trying to rush to see as much as I could in the limited time. I can see that renting a car would be a good option, But, we had an excellent guide in Akureyri, and most of the guides on the HAL excursions have been very informative and knowledgeable and were proud and passionate about the places they took us.

I just came across your series on the varioius ports in Iceland. My wife and I just completed a Circle Iceland cruise from/to Amsterdam in July on the Nieuw Statendam. We were scheduled to visit Djupivogur, but due to weather, we were redirected to Seydifjordur instead, where we had a delightful time wandering and exploying the town and waterfalls. I really enjoyed your video and wish we would have made it to this port, and your video showed what we missed. We had been scheduled to do an excursion to the glacier and glacier lake, and were disappointed that we missed it. We were actually waitlisted for the excursion, and were planning to do almost exactly what you did, but at the last few days, we cleared the waitless. Watching you video validated that we had a good plan and would have enjoyed Djupivogur as you did. I also watched your other videos, and plan to comment on them as well. Thanks for sharing! -Marty
