Even board games - take a quick top down photo of a Monopoly board, Chessboard and all your others and you can just project it when you need it! You could literally have 100,00 board games and it'd take up no more space!! Well worth trying!

AAAHHH! I can't believe I didn't even mention the cool little feature this projector has - it detects when things are obstructing the projected area and it automatically moves and shrinks the screen to fit whatever area is free. It's very neat as you can just drop things on the table to work on and it moves the image to somewhere free!! But I have to say in my defence, since reorganising the room with my organisational system, this table has remained pretty clear (which is a huge sign of success given how messy I am!!!)

What an absolutely brilliant idea! I have what was once a top of the line (15 years ago) projector I don't use any more that I was thinking of donating to our makerspace anyway. This is such a fantastic application for it! We were talking about making some tables for crafting anyway, I could see making a nice big one with a white surface to use with the projector, with plenty of room for marking and cutting larger pieces of cloth. I at first thought "oh, if only it was a 4K unit", but then saw that the HD resolution is perfectly fine for what you're showing it used for. Thanks so much for the fantastic tip! (I actually have a set of very heavy-duty legs for a powered table like this too. I was always going to make a custom sit/stand desk for my bedroom/office, but now do all my work in my basement workshops anyway, so I'll donate the motorized legs to the makerspace as well 🙂)

Yes you're right, I actually thought the same about a 4k unit, but I was delighted - I guess I hadn't twigged quite how close the projector is to the surface, so that pixel resolution becomes intensified. 4K projectors seem to still be a big leap to £1k+ at the moment, obviously when they arrive, it'll be even better!

I have a decent amount of space for computers. My main computer is on a 2 metre table (ikea hack) with dual monitors and my security camera monitor. My other room has 2 laptops, 1 Mac 2 laser printers and 2 3d printers, all sitting on a "L" shape tables each 2 metres long, another ikea hack. But what you've done there is next level.

Nice legs! This is a genius idea and I had no idea that they could be easily integrated into Home Assistant. Adding the overhead projector to bring your work directly to the table was superb! I'm a bit concerned that I'd spend a long period staring directly down at the surface and end up with a sore neck, but nothing the odd break or change of focus couldn't help to avoid I guess... the problem will be remembering once I get carried away in my flow at the table.

I had exactly the same thought actually!!! You can get things as messy as you want without ruining a screen! You could even lay out things like icing patterns and correct sizes for doughballs on the surface!!

You are a godsend. I have always wanted to integrate projectors with craft works but never had the space or budget for it. I'm so glad I found your video. Also, how do you properly scale your grid measurements to be accurate? Do you manual adjust the projected image to match your tape/rulers?

Thank you! To answer your question - the tap adjusts to very precise heights, the projector is fitted to the ceiling, so it becomes simple maths. Make a grid in whatever app you want with 10cm measurements, then project, measure with a precise ruler, then multiply by the ratio between the two - eg 10cm actually ended up being 11.45cm, then if you scale your image by 0.873362, then you have a pixel-perfect accuracy. This also means you have a 'grid' on your computer you can use for any other projections that you need to be accurate.

How do you get those projected images dimentionnaly accurate? Just measuring and resizing the image, adjusting the table height? Or do you have a better trick?

Yes, just a spot of maths. Make a grid of 5cm increments, then project it, measure the actual length and that gives you a ratio, eg 5:5.3, then you multiply your image by this percentage and you'll be bang on. You'll then know what pixel to mm ratio for everything you create (or you can use this file as a template)

Hi Katie! How do you manage to keep the grid scaling consistent when the table is at different heights? Doesn't the perspective difference mess with the measurements?

Yes! I actually have just got a set standard height for the measurement (as I couldn't think of a burning reason I'd need to measure at different heights!), but you could solve in two obvious ways. 1) just scale the image according to the height settings you choose or 2) create scaled images for your height settings. It's super quick to do as you can just multiply your grid by the difference in measurement to get the precise amount. So I'll do this if I ever need to! A third way would be to use the projector zoom, but I'd need to test how precise this is - the Flexispot table is extremely precise in it's height settings - which is great!

Add a top down view camera - with OpenCV backend (computer vision) and then you could enable hand tracking/gesture control. Also you could have context sensitive physical objects - either with QR codes on or again computer vision, recognise them and change your virtual workspace depending on the task at hand. Bring in the sewing machine to view for example, and it automatically launches the sewing patterns app workspace ;)

I love that table, and especially the projected screen! I'm thinking of all sorts of uses that display would have for tabletop wargaming (section off a small area in the corner for your army list, abilities, etc). I would love to know more about what you've found. Does it have a webcam connected to it to read what's on the table? I'd be tempted to make some visible marker it could look for and measure, then scale the display off of that to properly scale the grids. I have so many ideas now, I need to make my own.

Before you dropped this video today, I was actually planning out an idea I had of building a top for an E7 table which contained the computer itself inside of it, and in the middle of the table would be a large touchscreen monitor for doing artwork and writing! (As it's adjustable, it doesn't really matter how thick the tabletop is as long as there is space in the centre for my legs if it is going very low) Anyhoo, mindblown, and you're bloody living my dream life! 🤯😂 As a side note, you seem to have so much stuff and built so much, maybe you can tell in a video how you got started with everything? It would be intriguing to know... Especially for people who have very little to start off with and want to get to be in your position. 👍

​@@handsonkatie I was actually considering not using the monitor directly, but just the digitiser with gorilla glass on top recessed into 24mm veneered Ply for uber stability. It could be better than a projector in certain circumstances, but I can definitely see a projector being much better for projects such as the ones you used as examples like projecting over clothes etc. You've definitely given me food for thought though. 🤔😁 And if I may be so bold in saying, a video of how you started out might be better served for all to see, as people who want inspiration may not be able to fully afford a Patreon/member subscription. But definitely, videos of behind the scenes madness should be that extra member content. 👍😵‍💫🤓😂 And who knows, maybe the story of how you got started could be a free overview leading to a series on your member section of videos showing the step by step approaches you took. 🤷😁

@@simonspoke Hey Simon - yes that's exactly what I did, you need to be careful though - I think I burnt my monitor out after a year or two as the glass naturally traps heat right near the surface, so it may ultimately lead to damage if facing upwards! There's definitely ways around this (probably a small air gap and some fans blowing across this would fix, but as you say a projector has lots of advantages anyway! Re a 'starting out video' - what I meant was I'd show this first to Patreons and then release more broadly at a later date (I think this is only fair for all the amazing Patreons who have been supporting me on my mad journey learning to make videos and things!)

Awesome idea with the projector! I'd be too scared mounting a heavy, (slightly) vibrating, and heat producting machine overhead with an FDM part, but then again, I am a chemist without intuition for fatigue and creep. Did you calculate loads and resistance or just over-engineered by feel?

Oh goodness, the 3d print is designed for waaaay more than this would ever need - probably an order of magnitude more than required. Likewise no issue with heat or vibrations as I used the official mounting point (with screw fitting). I wouldn't worry about FDM, it is surprisingly strong for most things!

I also know for having used them in the past they radiate much heat, so how about the average consumption for daily use? (that's a one-off error indeed.) Yes, the projector really isn't that noisy at all - think they're all pretty good these days. Foot pedal is an interesting idea - this would be easy enough through home assistant

Briliant! Quick question: For the grid projections and similar, where you need the projected grid to be dimensionally accurate, do you have to put a scale on the table and adjust the zoom to suit each time or have you come up with something smarter?

No, the Flexispot is really good in this regard as you can save heights really precisely. So I basically just created a grid, projected it and then held a ruler up to this. This gave me the simple maths ratio to adjust my grid size on the PC to be perfectly accurate - so very basically if my 10cm grid was actually 11cm in real life, then I needed to scale down 10% to be spot on! Once this is done, my table and PC grids become permanently aligned and I know that 200px on my PC will always equal 20cm in real life (just making up example numbers for simplicity!)

You're absolutely right, it was an odd time where MS were inventing brilliant devices (Surface, Kinect etc) and were somehow screwing them up!! I'm actually musing turning this into a touch table if I think it would be handy!

When I was at Indiana University for grad school back in 2004 there were a bunch of people playing around with similar projection onto table concepts as well. One of the more unique things they were doing at the time was using RFID readers + chips embedded in physical objects to let you place and move around virtual representations of them. (From what I remember they were using multiple readers to triangulate the exact position) Just imagine doing things like gridfinity layout if each object you set down was manufactured with an RFID chip that contained a url pointing to metadata about the product. Think of how cool it would be if that included a 3d model of the object (or at least enough identifying information for you to link up with a community maintained archive of 3d scans).

I am curious: do you adjust the dimensions of the images sensitive to scale every time you change the height of the desk or do you have a smarter approach? 🙂 Similarly, does the projector require adjusting the lens with every desk adjustment?

Nope, I was super surprised for the price, but this projector auto focuses whenever you move it and adjusts keystone also! Then I can just set the table to the height I want and it'll remember every time

Very cool idea! I'm guessing the projected image doesn't fully come into its right in the video, due to ambient lighting and the color grading - but in real life, this could look stunning. An improvement could be to use a black projector screen rather than a traditional white. This comes with a range of benefits, mainly from increased contrast, color depth and better sharpness/definition along with less glares and reflections. The drawback however, is if you have a lot of ambient light due to reduction of overall brightness. A more powerful projector remedies this somewhat, but no matter what, a black screen will always produce darker results than a white, so it's a tradeoff.

Yes, I was annoyed at my lack of video skills in this as the projected image is clear as day in the brightest light, there's absolutely no issue with visibility in any condition. Colours are great too - just doesn't come across in the video as I mentioned. I'm super impressed at how far these projectors have come, it does auto focus, auto keystone adjustment and more - given it's only projecting 1.5m or so, I guess it's not a surprise how bright the image is, but it works super cool! I've also got a range of different colour mats anyway that I use for different projects, so I tested those, but the normal light grey one worked brilliantly!

If only there was a way to incorporate touch or RFID to the table top surface to have it recognize gestures or objects to change function or display. I'm sure there is a way. I've wanted to use a projector with a games table for game nights, project a map and effects down on the surface.

Can you explain how you set up the computer and projector? Where is the laptop you are connecting to?

This is the great thing about this projector - it connects by Wifi 6 to any PC, laptop, mobile or tablet (it also does bluetooth), so I can use any PC I fancy. I just use my PC in the next room and it can duplicate it's screen onto the projector. This means I simply turn the projector on and it'll show whatever is on my screen!
