Thanks Jimmy! The M4 is the largest leap forward since the M1. Currently using the M4 Pro 14/20/24 in a 16" and it exceeded expectations in comparing it to a 10/24/32 M1 Max 16" and a M1 Pro 12/18/18 in a 14".

@ Last year I thought I wanted a more portable MacBook to carry for work. Traded the 16” for the 14”. Then the M4 11” iPad happened and became my work carry. The 14” ended up as a desktop with a smaller screen. Missed the 16” so I decided it would be a good time to go back. I was a little disappointed in the M3 Pro. Totally loving the M4 Pro 16”, honeymoon period, but I think it is my favorite MBP so far.

I started out with the 16' binned max chip. I use my machine non stop for editing, operating my e-comm business, I sometimes have 20 web based apps open at a time as well and I also use it for heavy media consumption. That being said, the max was absolute OVERKILL. I am interested in also having a certain level of future proofing as well as tech in general is just growing at such a rapid pace. Today I went to BestBuy and exchanged for a 512gb 16' pro with 48gb of memory. I am super happy with my decision and believe this machine will last for years before I need to think about another one. I also am running a 2tb external SSD as I don't believe in spending $600 more with Apple to get that extra 2tb. Great content and you got my sub!

Im on an M3 Max, with 16 cpu and 40 gpu cores and 64gbs of memory and I don't feel the need to upgrade whatsoever, what I have now is more than enough performance wise at the moment....maybe in a few years I'll feel differently but I'm good for now, no complaints at all.

You people seem to think everybody buys these super-specced out MacBooks. I upgraded from the Base M3 Pro 16 inch MacBook Pro, to the Base 16 inch M4 Pro MacBook Pro, and the additional CPU/GPU Cores as well as Ram, is literally MASSIVE. I was living and dying by Swap Memory with the M3, whereas the M4 Pro's Base 24 GB RAM is beyond sufficient for a gross amount of simultaneous tasks. Just something to consider for the people who say "MaKeS No SeNsE tO uPgRaDe"

Thank you soooo much for bringing the base M1 into this comparison. I have been looking at youtube reviews for days and days waiting for someone to do this comparison. A lot of us got their first MacBook Pro at a time only the base M1 was out, and are now looking to upgrade finally. Truth is we don’t really know how to make sense of all these numbers, until it is compared with the M1. Again, thank you soooooo much!

1600 nits outside and 1 nit at night. That's an incredible upgrade. Not having 1 nit at night on my iPhone 15 Pro, which I chose over the iPhone 16 that has that feature, is what I like the least about the 15 Pro. I think you're wrong about gaming on M4 MacBook Pros. They're great for gaming on a 14.2" screen imo. Base M4 and M4 Pro Binned are the highlights of this year. Great value propositions. I went for the base model, due to the availability of a good discount, but also because of the reason you mention: year over year improvements are so vast that you shouldn't get compute you don't need now or in the immediate future. I'm upgrading from an Intel MacBook Pro. Would've waited for the alleged slimmer 2026 redesign if my old laptop wasn't literally coming apart.
@JimmyTriesWorldАй бұрын
I don’t disagree with you on the gaming bit either! They’re definitely fast enough to handle gaming, but the games I’d want to play don’t have Mac OS support. Just as a broad example, look at all of the Game Awards GOTY nominees for this year, only 1/6 you can play on Mac OS. It’s a sad state of very little compatibility for Mac OS gaming.

I am still on a M1 2020 base (13.3 inch with the famous Touch Bar) and it's running so good - as if it's still new! The only reason why I am thinking of upgrading to the M4 base or M4 Pro chip is because my sister who is 16 wants a laptop for college applications. Stuck between the base (since the m1 base was so nice) and the pro chip.

I bought the M4 Max 16" MBP last week, but I just ordered a 14" and I think I'm going to return the 16. I had an M1 Pro 14" previously and the portability was just too nice to give up. I went for the binned M4 Max 14/32 core, 36GB RAM and 1TB SSD. I'm sure it's going to run a bit hotter and be louder than the 16", but tbh I'm not pushing my computer to the limits all the time. For the occasional photo/video editing session I can deal with some heat & noise. I didn't go for a lower end model even though I don't need the Max chip because I do need the RAM and storage, and didn't wanna wait 2 weeks for a custom order.

Hi: nice vid. M4 MBP Looks as thick as my first MBP 2007 santarosa. Why is that? Shouldn't be thinner?
@nickd7935Ай бұрын
Because when they made the pros thinner they compromised on thermals and noise and performance. And so they went back to a more performance oriented design. Pros need performance, not thinness. The current design is perfect balance between light enough to carry but still gives the performance to do real heavy work. If you want something thin, they make a computer for you called the MacBook Air that still has great single threaded performance.

I am using my 27 inch 2019 i9 iMac with baseline 580X graphics with 40 GB of RAM. The monitor portion of the computer is worth more than the computing related portions of the system itself if that is even possible. I have used it effectively for Matlab based simulations, C++ and Python coding, and general computing tasks. I have also used it to perform basic edits on 4K/60 log footage from my iPhone 15 Pro and I have used it to even edit a large panoramic photo using Adobe Photoshop Elements albeit without the smoothest performance to say the least. Certainly, even the M4 iMac would blow my computer out of the water in regard to these tasks and handle these tasks quite effectively. Separately, my son is using a binned version of the M1 Pro BP Pro with 16 GB of RAM very effectively when using Logic with lots of plugins. I am considering upgrading to the M4 MB Pro binned 14 inch version with 24 GB of RAM and 1 TB SSD.

Hey, great vid! I have a Windows HP Spectre from 2018 and I'm looking at waiting for the Air in March or getting a Macbook M4 or M4 Pro. Not sure how much future proofing I need to do. It's tempting to get the Macbook M4 Pro with nano texture and 1Tb, but I don't really see myself using all that power in the next couple years. This is a test of how cheap I am :)

A more usefull tool for recomanding or not a pro or not, would be how well an Air those can run VMs, because that is what saves you if you got more diverse tasks. I am talking about Air because if you need performance you buy performance. That one is clear. But what if you just need to run a specific vpn, or just an SPSS for a very small data base. Can an Air sustain performance of that VM for hours? If not even lite users and students would need a PRO device.

If apples trade in doesn’t work for you, then sell it yourself. The reason apple doesn’t give huge value in the trade in is because you’re paying them that difference to do the logistics of cleaning up the machine and finding a new buyer.

Trade in values have nothing to do with how much it originally cost and everything to do with what the computer is worth on the open market *plus* how easy it is to find a buyer for that specific configuration.
