This one is debatable! there is many reasons why i prefer the donner cut, but really we need a supercut. For example one thing i like about donners version is both the villains are far more sinister, and the line delivery is far far more menacing, also i love all the jor el scenes. However what i'd leave in is more of the footage of the kryptonians making their name known in the small town, its absent from donners version, i'd certainly cut the slapstick but yea the whole end of turning back time bugged me. As cheesy as the kiss is, it is the better ending.

Theatrical version is better. Lester had full use of most the original cast when he was finishing the movie. Donner’s cut is a ruff draft. Why people try to compare them like they are in the same category doesn’t make sense. Justice League is a much more fare comparison.

Very well done essay. When i watched the movie for the first time, i hated it for the whole dad leaving, and things were not making sense, but i saw it in the eyes of an adult. Hopefully in a second re-watch i will appreciate the movie. Love aliens

If these two movies were graded by film school students for extra credit, BB would come away with higher scores overall. But TDK shares a similar issue with Snyder's version of Superman. It's one thing for them to be the reluctant hero, but the degree where they're practically disgusted when they have to follow the path that they've chosen, is ridiculous, and not what these characters are about

In the Donner Cut, the timing makes no sense. It's quickly established that Lois is just now getting back from California, and then Perry tells them they're going to Niagra Falls in the same scene. That puts a timestamp on everything else that happens in the movie. Superman should still be a relatively new thing... but the president has already grown to expect him to show up "every time there's a cat in a tree." That also means that Lex and Otis have been tried, convicted, and had the time to acclimate to prison life in the course of a few days. 😕Hell, Lex has had time to build a holographic projector, in prison, FROM A BOX OF SCRAPS! In the theatrical version, all this has had a couple of years to play out. Far-fetched? Sure. But not outright ridiculous. If this was all part of Donner's original plan, then that plan had some gaping holes in it.

I grew up with the lesser cut but I just only now a few weeks ago saw the donner cut I prefer the it to the lesser cut it gets to the point much faster and skip's a lot of unnecessary shit or that's a good thing don't get me wrong the lesser cut is not totally bad the donner cut is just totally better.

The fundamental problem with the Donner-Cut is that, while well-intentioned, it's essentially the pet project of a relatively inexperienced editor who bit off more than he could chew in terms of tackling a highly ambitious project. The makeshift special effects are atrocious, and the manner in which shots are cobbled together frequently lend themselves to inadvertently comical results. I never fail to burst out laughing when Zod utters that atrociously melodramatic "FREEEEEEEE!!!!" Oliver Harper was right in his assessment about Michael Thau as being "a competent editor. But to take on such a large project by himself, he is not skilled enough, or has enough films under his belt to take on the job as solo editor. The movie should have been edited by a more experienced editor, and should've had more people involved to get the best results." Thau, being overly ambitious, ultimately bit off more than he could proverbially chew with this project, and the end result unfortunately resembles a horribly amateurish KZbinr fan-edit more than professional re-cut.

Lester needed to Direct 51 % of the Movie to get credit so bad cuts were made. The Lester Cut set up the terrible future movie going back to the 60s Batman Styles . Donner Cut Hands down Imagine if we got the Hundred Percent.

There's one thing no one seems to mention. If you choose to include Superman Returns as the third in a trilogy, then you have to go with the Lester cut. The reason is that the Donner cut uses additional footage of Jo-Rel that had already been seen in Superman Returns.

I think the Donner Cut might be better, if we got Superman I the way, he wanted it. The reverse time thing was only meant to be in Superman II, but the "studio" chose to use it for the first film.
@2JZilla342Ай бұрын
nice video dude i'm happy you covered the subject! i love the donner cut. since I was about 4 years old i always wondered: How did superman get his powers back in superman 2? The Donner cut explains it and in a way that ties into the whole story from the 3hr verion of the first film. In Superman 1 he spends loads of time learning from Marlon Brando and goes to him for advice - they have a deep relationship. And then in the Donner cut he makes a selfish decision to chase his own desires and the consequences were grave because Marlon Brando had to die for Superman to get his powers back. So for example during the fight in Metropolis when Zod calls him a son of a coward it cuts a lot deeper. And then he has to laser up his own home at the end and reverse everything all because he turned his back on the responsibilities that came with his powers - it cost him a lot. Over the two films is explains how and why superman is the superman we know like noble, honest and steadfast etc. I showed the film to 2 mates and we absolutely loved the Donner cut it completed our childhood man!

They would maintain a connection, but be in three different social groups. The reculse and the jock will date and hand with the sports crowd. The beauty queen and the burnout will date and hang out more with the burnouts. Basing that on any mismatched high school relationship I knew of from the 80's. The girl went with the guy. The nerd has more confidence and stays with the nerds, but is treated well by the jocks and burnouts.

If Rose had rather simply donated the jewel to some of the needy kiddies causes or a multitude of other charities thereby supporting & saving swathes of poverty stricken communities, the gesture would have made much more sense & its impact resonated with much greater selfless intent. Where's the positive takeaway other than her own personal satisfaction in the gesture of simply dropping it straight in the drink? It makes her appear more like a cranky, reckless ole loon. Apparently, the purpose was to show the futility of the pursuit of wealth over the value of life, although ironicaly the gesture in reality, was used by the film makers to cash in the shock effect value created on the audience!

Hey there, thanks for putting things in order, the crises relly confused. In short - I've seen both in different times, I 'll keep the donor cut in a (DVD) drawer, and cherish theatrical version I've seen as a child. And I despy the Fuss/fued of the directors. I wonder what Mr. Reeve R.I.P. Said about it .

Nothing would have been different on Monday than it was on Friday. Cliques don't change in high school, and those in the upper circles socially -- Claire and Andy -- would have ignored the rest of them. This took place in the 1980s, and believe me, cliques didn't cross-pollinate then. Ever hear of Columbine? That was in the 1990s. If things have changed in high schools since then, that's fantastic. I hope they have. But no, in the 1980s, one Saturday morning would not have disrupted the hierarchical clique structure.

The use of time travel at the end is an artifact of Richard Donner not actually finishing it in the first place. He only planned on using that ending for Superman II when he was filming Superman The Movie. However, he decided he needed to use it in the first movie to have a big finish there. Whatever ending he would actually have used is not known since he was fired before it was filmed. It may not have even been scripted yet. That said, the scene of Lois firing the gun at Clark was why I liked that version better. It doesn't just have Clark stumble (whether intentional or not), but has Lois actually trap him in situation where he is tricked into revealing himself. Having her actually outsmart him shows why she is such a respected reporter and his equal.

They both have some high points but then again lows , celephane S sucks , that part on the Niagara fall could be reshot or redone , stupid Monocule chamber was the lowest point In the film . The best would to recapture Zod and crew in to the phantom Zone some how so his presence could be used in a third movie ( wink wink nudge nudge ) since it’s Science Fiction movie and comic book flick the Flash could had changed the ending . Kinda of a run in or appearance outta nowhere . Batman could have helped in the Zod beat down and the final beat down with Zod and Superman could had been more epic before Zod leaves earth forever . ( kinda like the scene with obi wan and Vader in episode four ) the WB has the rights to use stock footage then use everything that was shot .they now have the power of AI for voice reconstruction and shoot the scenes in that needed to be shot . The Justice League formation at the ending could also be an ending and a rebuild of what was damaged !
