Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed the listen. Yes, the sheet music is a good representation of what I played on the video. The video was an improvisation "in the moment" - I then transcribed my playing for the sheet music. Let me know if you have any questions down the road should you acquire the sheet music. Cheers!

I find the Hammond's Pipe Organ "Oboe" stop a bit less aggressive than its trumpet stop. Serviceable enough for practicing when I'm too lazy to connect my computer to trigger Hauptwerk from the Hammond. Thanks for stopping by to watch!

Do you have a vid about your pedal board? does it function as a standard MIDI keyboard? does it work well with the Hammond XK5? Oh, and where did you get it? And how much did it cost?
@azurehillsmusic2 ай бұрын
Hoping to put together a video on the pedalboard in the coming week or two. It has a midi out connection which I plug into my Hammond's midi in. The pedals themselves work with the Hammond XK5 with no problem. However, I've never been able to get the swell pedal to transmit volume to the Hammond (when using Hammond sounds). It does send swell midi data when I play my Hauptwerk program from my Hammond. There are some quirks to be aware of - hopefully if I get to making a video on this I can go into more detail. I got the pedalboard years ago from Classic Midi Works. It is pricy at close to $3k - here is a link to the store: www.midiworks.ca/index.php/products?route=product/category&path=2

Agreed - certain stops are better than others. Definitely not a replacement for the real thing, but it comes in handy at the house for practice. I am a big fan of Hautpwerk - which seems to be as authentic as you can get when access to real pipes isn't possible. Thanks for watching!

Very much like your demo. I wonder if the stops available for both manuals could be combined by leveraging on midi - i.e. by sending midi messages from the lower to the upper manual. What do you think?
@azurehillsmusic6 ай бұрын
That would be interesting to try. I don't know that I could figure that out myself - but it would provide an even larger spectrum of sound if the manuals could be coupled. Maybe it will be a future enhancement that Hammond can offer. Thanks for stopping by to watch!

Foot pedals are an option for the Hammond XK5. The pedalboard sold by Hammond for this organ is a 25-note model. I purchased a midi pedalboard from Classic Midiworks that provides an AGO 32-note compass that allows me to explore the classical repertoire.

You omit that the Nektar NX-P pedal also has a switch to change the polarity to ensure compatibility. I am a keyboard player I have two expression pedals: the Behringer FCV 100 and the Yamaha FC-7. I am very happy with both but both are too heavy to take live. That's why I'm after the Nektar. I am also in the business of repairing electronic instruments. Your problem with it has to do with a faulty or dirty potentiometer. In both cases it would be solved by replacing it with a higher quality one, something quite easy to do. If the same thing happens to me with the Nektar, that is what I will do. PS. I don't like Amazon at all. It is a worldwide monopoly that only serves to make the richest man on the planet almost four thousand dollars every second. Barbaric.

I’ve been doing a deep-dive on this topic in the quest to get a true B3-like tapered volume expression for my Nord Electro 2. The Boss EV-5’s is horrible; similar to how you described the Nektar. The Yamaha pedal is incompatible unless you buy a bunch of cables to swap the TRS polarity. The Moog EP-3 supposedly has the tapered response. There’s also the Crumar long-throw pedal, but its resistance range may be outside what is specified by Nord. All that to say that this is a more complex thing than most people realize
@azurehillsmusic9 ай бұрын
So true. While my Boss EV-30 was an improvement over the Nektar pedal, even it has not been ideal. Continuing to have an eye open for a better pedal as well. Thanks for stopping by to watch and best wishes on finding an optimal pedal for your situation.

@@azurehillsmusic FWIW, I just found out from Crumar that the EXP-10 universal long-throw pedal has a resistance of 10kOhms, which is within the specifications of the Nord Electro 2

I need one for synth volume control. Two sounds piano and organ. I want the organ to shut off when the pedal's a zero .[I also have the piano programed not to respond to the pedal.]. Will this do that?
@azurehillsmusic10 ай бұрын
I don't believe this can control two inputs in different ways if I understand your question correctly. It would be able to handle synth volume for sure. I'm not familiar with programming cc7 by sound or patch, only globally. Sorry I can't be of more help on this question - as I don't think I have a way of testing the scenario on my rig.

Have you tried the Yamaha FC-7 yet? I am always looking for the maximum "throw" from an expression pedal, and that is the best one I have found yet. It looks like it has about double the throw of the EV-30?
@azurehillsmusic11 ай бұрын
Appreciate your thoughts. Recently, I've been concerned with the EV-30 throw - in that the volume range for my keyboard only seems be most controllable in the last 1/2 or 1/3 of the throw range. I'll give the Yamaha FC-7 a try next - hopefully, it engages more range of volume throughout the entire throw range of the pedal.
@garlandmusic11 ай бұрын
@@azurehillsmusic FWIW - the FC7 only works on yamaha stuff "as is". If you want to use it on a Roland, you need to flip the "polarity" of the connector. To get full use out of the whole range, I also wired mine so that each half of the pot is in parallel with a 47K resistor. This adds another power of two to the log curve and drops the value down to roland range. Oh, you can also use the Yamaha without change on Nord Electro 5D and presumably other Nords.

I was so glad to finally see something like this. I play a C-2 in Church. Try as best as I can, I can not get a true pipe organ sound of of that thing. It makes a great flute sound, but as far as strings or reeds, I just can't seem to get that. Any drawbar settings you can suggest to get me closer to where I might be happy? I've heard a few Hammonds of this age make a rather convincing pipe sound, but I have no idea how they did it. Thanks.
@azurehillsmusic Жыл бұрын
Thanks for stopping by to watch. I'll see about making a video about the pipe organ registrations I use on the XK5. In general, for church hymn accompaniments, I pull 8' and 4' stop options (from the pipe organ bank). The string tunes (just as when I play an actual pipe organ), I don't use for accompanying congregational singing. Mixture stop I might add on the last verse of a hymn - similar to a reed stop (if used at all). The reed options on the XK5 are acceptable, but I find it a nice option as a solo stop (upper manual) when playing an instrumental piece (e.g., if I use an 8+4 registration on the lower manual). The pipe organ sounds from the XK5 come from a dedicated bank - not from the traditional Hammond Organ drawbar sounds that you otherwise would have on a tonewheel organ.

Thanks for the in depth explanation on the organ. I was just wondering, it seems that it has way many more octaves of keys, than you needed to use. How many octaves are each manual? i was wondering, i saw most of the highest sounds were probably 2 octaves lower than the highest note. What type of sound would they even make? IYO, do you feel that there TOO many octaves of keys given there is no need to split the manuals as there is in single manual Nords, Yamahas, etc?
@azurehillsmusic Жыл бұрын
The Hammond has five octaves of playable keys - the black key octave on the bottom don’t play notes, they trigger sound combinations - so the range is comparable to standard church/pipe organs. This video wasn’t intended to showcase the playability of the pipe organ ranks but rather just showcase the sounds Hammond chose to use on this organ. As for octaves per manual, I suppose it depends on the needs of the player. I need five octaves per manual for sure. Wouldn’t be able to play the works of Widor, Mendelssohn, Buxtehude etc without a full compass available. Thanks for watching!
@MG-Nordster Жыл бұрын
@@azurehillsmusic I understand, it just looks wider than my CV. Looked like it had extra octaves of white keys. I'm aware of the reverse keys functions. But thanks for the video. You sound great playing it. Way above my abilities! Thanks again.
