What do you think of buying a car from Aucor? Often sell for well below trade in price even after VAT and fees. Do you think the downsides outweigh the price?

I really enjoy your relaxed style of videos! Must be the relaxed SA vibe!. Ironically I am trying to decide between a Land cruiser and W123 as a daily driver. I have never worked on cars before so that is holding me back from purchasing the W123. I thhink LC may require less maintenance. How much maintenance would a low miles (100k km) W123 require if most issues sorted?

The Nomad had a 2.5 litre 4 cyl Chev motor , same as the Eland armoured car
@oldmercguy8 күн бұрын
Yes, and based on the “iron duke”. I had a Nomad. It reminded me of it because of similar low end performance.

1997 and still a carb.... shame on toyota for selling the crap nobody wanted in SA, while the rest of the WORLD got the Efi versions even from earlier models.... and at the current fuel price, this will cost around R4 PER KILO! ! thats madness !
@oldmercguy8 күн бұрын
The carbs don’t give hassles. Depends what you’re looking for I guess. The VX versions were EFI

Reminds me of my old 1999 Toyota Hilux, Toyota didn't fuss with interiors back then, everything looked the same. I bet the range is closer to 900km or slightly more. These are bulletproof

Fantastic old car. Interesting that you mentioned it standing out in the parking lot. Here in the US almost every car is black, white or various shades of grey inbetween. Color has almost vanished from the world of the automobile. I hate it. I love that "English Red". I actually chose red when I bought myself a new car three years ago literally so that I could find it easitly in parking lots.
@oldmercguy8 күн бұрын
Yes it really has got very boring these days. It’s also become a safety thing, other drivers are far more likely to notice your car if it’s different to everything else out there.

I was selling a car a few years ago here in Australia. Had a African guy come and look at it and trying to beat me down on the price. After about an hour, we agreed on what I was price and he wanted to leave a $500 deposit. I convinced him to leave $100 deposit. Anyway hearing up a few days later and said I have to drop the price because his wife said he couldn't have any more money. I said if you don't come and pay the rest within the seven days after you put down your $100 deposit I'll keep it there's no refund. By Australian law, the seller can keep a hundred dollar deposit after seven days. I never heard back from him again and sold it to somebody else. Cheers Graham

Never. Is a tremendously long word. So. Will Mercedes need to build cars for another 120 years. And yet not repeat the quality of a 123 and 124. Period!
@oldmercguy20 күн бұрын
The philosophy behind car design has changed, in the 80’s the w123/4 were designed and built to last a life time. Not so today.

I really like the 123, it’s the last old school looking type, but honestly only the turbo version and the 230 E is useable. ( of course all six cylinder models are also rolling as well , just unfortunately they needed a petrol station) By the way in my opinion the w124 is the best Mercedes ever if anyone doesn’t mind that the style is a little bit modern not so classic as the w123!! Cheers from Hungary 🇭🇺

Didn’t know about the dealer options. All of the 240d’s I ever saw had no left mirror. That’s how I differentiated them from a distance. I never saw a 300d without both rvm’s. My dad bought a 300d w123, 1981 model, in 1985. I believe he paid a princely R19k for it, back then. Stayed in the family for 21 years, before he sold it, after my mum passed. It had a slightly different steering wheel - didn’t have the serrations on either side of the horn. But it still had four of those delightful devil horn style headrests! The aircon, I believe, weighed an absolute ton. My uncle (cheapskate) had a 1983 200, and opted to remove the entire unit, with compressor, when his gave trouble. He said two guys had to carry it away😂. What marvellous automobiles!
