Great little car, loved my MK1. I had one of the very last, one of only 1000 made. It had all the extras, mine also had AC. I'm really sorry I let it go, but I ended up with a new Polo after that. Great to see a survivor.👍

Those last 1000 MK1’s were very cool cars.

I have a 1800 Fox sport 1992. I absolutely love it. The only problem is the back parts are difficult to find. I am currently looking for a right rear tail light. I love the content on your channel please continue and looking forward to more.

A friend had one of the first MK1 diesel golfs when they were still relatively new. He was a farmer in the Karoo and loved it. Very rare to find now.👍

Nice diesels are getting VERY hard to find here in South Africa these days.

Love it! The Fox must be quite rare by now. In my opinion the Mk. 1 golf is one of the most beautiful hatchbacks of all time. It was styled by Giorgetto Giugiaro who also did the DeLorean, Lotus Esprit and several Ferraris and Alfas. I would love one but I already have 3 old cars that waste money and space and I don't want to part with any of them...

Yes you don’t see a lot of low mileage ones around anymore. A really nice little car.

How amazing to see such a well looked after preserved car. Credit to the owners. Brought up in the days where you were taught to look after your things. That car could run for 100 years not like the modern throw away cars made today. Colour combination is really nice to. Thanks for showing us the car. Just fit another cluster in with a rev gauge and it works ,all the wiring is already there. German engineering and simplicity you just don't get anymore. Happy motoring.

Thank you. I was actually so impressed with the little car that I ended up making the owner an offer and buying it. I’m astounded at how cheap parts are for it.

Thanks for the video. That WERE/ARE great cars, and as you say, ride a lot better than a Citi Golf did. I had an 85 Jumbo Golf/Mk 2 Golf. Did over 500 000 kms in it. Good point about the wing mirror on left side - the W123's were HUGELY costly in period...hence pretty much everything was an extra! Good point about the scratching that occurs beneath the door handle...see that in so many cars.

I also just happened to know a guy who had a 1985 Mk2 GTI with over 500000km on the clock. Eventually he broke a piston ring. Not sure what he did after that, but yes they had excellent engines and gearboxes.

I remember at some point in the very early 90’s I bought a 85 Jetta MK2 1.6 with over 400k km on. Still ran beautifully. I was so impressed with the Fox in this video, I bought it yesterday 😂.

And cheap as chips to fix. After this video I ended up buying the car and thought I’d look for a set of mudflaps for it, R220 for a set of 4 on Takelot 😂

In addition to the points made, the car sits on the road very well - stable, gives a feeling of security. And yes, the "survivor" status is indeed what makes it "special".

My late dad had one, was upgraded to 1.8 with the autobox, ran very well, and strangely the steering on it was much lighter than my brother's caddy bakkie. Sadly it was affirmatively shopped one night from his yard, and nogal with his wheelchair in the back because he had trouble waking.

I live in Swakopmund Namibia, it is one of the most corrosive places on earth. "No lies," even Tupperware rusts, I own a workshop that specializes in Mercedes-Benz ,but I also work on other makes of cars. Don't know what the VW engineering department did to the Fox ,but it is the most corrosive resistant car ever made. They just don't rust, even after 25 +years in Swakopmund. And with all our salt roads that says a lot.
@petercollingwood5223 ай бұрын
Why do you have salt roads in Swakop? Theres no snow there surely?
@jimmyroos16772 ай бұрын
@petercollingwood522 probably cause they're more durable than normal gravel roads, they compact them properly, some are so smooth and hard u would think it's a tar road....
@jimmyroos16772 ай бұрын
@petercollingwood522 Yes, we definitely don't have snow here in Swakopmund. We're in the middle of the desert. And there's no rain, so I guess salt roads are good, they just kill cars, though.
@oldmercguy2 ай бұрын
I lived in Windhoek in the 70’s and I remember my father leaving the Mercs hubcaps at home every time we went to Swakop because of the compacted salt roads.
