The bit about how nature isn't uniform reminded me that one time visiting France, I was really unnerved by how I saw multiple forests where most of the trees were in rows. I asked a professor about it and he said that those were the result of various wars from WWII all the way back to wars with Prussia etc. Forests had either been cut down for wood for the war effort, or burned by the enemy, or cleared to use the area for staging, or whatever--and later the forest was replanted, but it was done en masse and in an ordered fashion.

05:50 One tip I would suggest when using GIMP to edit things like tilesets/etc (although I'd imagine things like Photoshop should have similar setups for the same thing) is to go into "View > Show Grid" and then use "Image > Configure Grid" to adjust it so that it fits the size of the tiles; that way you can have a much easier idea knowing where the boundaries are than if you try to just eyeball it.

A thing to add to the whole "Your map is too boxy" statement. What you said was solid advice for indoor spaces but fails to really address a major issue, the VXA, MV and MZ RTP's are absolute garbage for their outdoor tilesets. Earlier RTP tilesets either allowed you to create 8-directional cliffs (2000 and 2003) or circular cliffs (XP). Not these ones. That's why even outdoor spaces crafted using the RTP are boxy-a-f. Unless there's something I'm doing seriously wrong here, it feels like custom tilesets are the only way to get past the issue.
@PuffZombie
@PuffZombie 7 ай бұрын
Who needs vanilla RTP anyway ? After you got familliar with engine, first thing you need to do is to got some unique assets, cause the reason RPG maker games have bad reputation is overused default aasets, even in commercial projects. So, why complain what MV/MZ default RTP doesn't have resources you want ? Anyway, "boxy" doesn't always bad. While "realistic" style is cool and all, sometimes boxy is more than enough. Me, personally, love that style, its reminds me of old-school games.

I temember when the word RTP had a meaning. Now it is just a reference to it. In the days of RPG Maker... All of them before MV actually, you were expected to download a pack of files known as an RTP to play the games. Those files were the basic image and sound files for the games, just like the ones that are added automatically on a new mv or mz project. The thing is, as long as you had the rtp installed any project that used it would already have the files there. Meaning that projects that used many of the base resources - most of them - could just be installed in bulk, as most of the image/sound files would already be installed in the rtp. Of course, it could get annoying for people downloading to need it, or if the game did not use it much, so there were ways to change your game to not need it with some extra work. Extra work those who did not need it would not go out of the way for. While MV (and later MZ) does not use the RTP system, its basic files serve the same function of "basic/example files for a brand new project" so they became known as its RTP even though they do not have that "only one install for all your projects at once" function the original RTPs were bamed for.

Actually really interesting, I had no idea.
@masteryoraerasante
@masteryoraerasante 3 жыл бұрын
yeah, I imagined. As I said, it only stopped being used on MV. But MV is also when it got really popular (I blame plug8ns making it easier to change, the numbered were eventing-only and xp, vx and vx-ace needed the coding changed by the user directly instead of just putting the plugin and their values) - save for the ganes that went out of their way to remove the need for them anyway. So people not in the not-as-popular games, or active users of the older versions, have no real reason to look into it.

Another amazing video, Toasty! There isn't much that can be added other than (1) 100% if you create a single-room map for a house, you need to not do that. That's where so many boxie comments originate. (2) Towns built on elevation are usually that way because there is a lack of flat space below, so populating the elevation ares with houses are fine... but don't over do it. Rural cities like to not use all of their land for homes. (3) Bless you for saying "nature is not uniform". Bless you, sir. Lots of love form Steel and Teal. Stay awesome!

I feel like there's a good reason to have an undecorated room, but really only the one and I don't think it would be too common. It'd be a character who moves often, and doesn't really want to get connected to a house if they feel like they're just gonna lose that connection within a year or two.

On the note of image manipulation, GIMP has grids which can help you align the placement of things. For moving the painting, you can make the grid size half what it usually is (I think 48x48 in MV, so 24x24) and that would let you move the painting exactly half a grid off to "center" it.

The boxy rooms, I don't recall where I learned about it, but the idea is to break up the boxyness with objects. 3d videogames do this all the time - what would otherwise be a ugly as hell 90º street with walls is broken into something organic by placing litter, trash bins, benches, etc, things that break up the geometry

I appreciate your videos. I'm a writer, film maker, and musician -- who studied narrative and film theory for close to a decade. I've been looking at different ways to tell stories; that I have not experimented with before. I have no interest in a career as a game designer. I'm merely looking to do a one off art experiment through RPG maker, to explore using the complex narratives I usually work with in a medium, that is in stark contrast to my themes, and subtext. Your videos have been a nice starting point. I haven't even picked up the maker yet -- just watching videos on what works, and more importantly what fails. Also -- you're pretty funny.

@masteryoraerasante
@masteryoraerasante 3 жыл бұрын
@@DustyEchozy Can I take this one? Absolutely. Most rpg maker themselves, mv and mz included, already have a system for that with three vehicles, by default a boat, a ship for deeper waters and an airship for about anywhere. While it may be more work nowadays, as mv and mz keep them more hardcoded while past rms let you change them on the system settings (I remember making a skateboard on 2k by making the boat walk on land and the ship be the water one), you can change that back to close to that using plugins. Also, you may need some work changing the images. While my skateboard was made using a common event through an item to call and enter it, which also made the player faster, at that time there was also the problem that the boat had no player image. So you needed a way to change it to have the player inside when driving it. Nowadays you can have an easier time with the right plugins, and pretty sure you may need them for the land vehicles, but yeah, perfectly doable. Anything else, just change the player's character image to the car's and make them walk faster while "riding" them.

@@masteryoraerasante Bro what is MV & MZ?
@masteryoraerasante
@masteryoraerasante 3 жыл бұрын
@@DustyEchozy Different versions of RPG Maker. RPG Maker MV is the one Toasty used on this video, MZ is the one released after it. There are quite a few console ones. But the one most people outside Japan were introduced to was a computer one, RPG Maker 2000, in the... very early 2000, translated and spread around by a Russian person known as Don Miguel. It is known as 2k. Not long after there was RPG Maker 2003, which was the same as 2000 but with extras, like being able to use the Shift and Numberpad keys for events, it could play mp3 music instead of just midi and wav, characters could have up to level 100 and 999 in all status (save for HP which could get up to 9999) and, most important, battle was in sideview using the ATB system like Final Fantasy did. You could even use animations for every movement instead of the basic battler characters, letting them look much better with extra work. It is known as 2k3, but since so much of it is also useable on 2000, all 2000 resources can be used on 2003 and the only ones of 2003 not useable on 2000 being the ones for sideview battles and mp3 sound files, they are usually known as 2k/3 (2k and 2k3, 2k/3) After some time there was the RPG Maker XP, which had a completelly different way for most graphics, a brand new mapping system where you had three layers and could put the pieces in any of those layers, character sprites had no size limit but had four sprites of animation each side isntead of three, each character was a single sheet, and most important, there was a way to change a lot of the game's coding through a script window. It used Ruby, and was a bit complicated at the time but was made better in later releases. It removed sideview battle and ATB, but you have a monster-like image for the players and can always change the code to a battle system of your own. It was worse without it, but you could make it better. Also, you could make the battler have an animation for attacking and being hit, with some imagination could be like if they were attacking themselves. It was also, as far as I know, the first one to be sold outside Japan. It is known as the XP. After the XP, there was RPG Maker VX, also known as VX. It was... a mess. Rare people still use it. It improved the use of scripts, and... that was its best thing. It shrunk the window and limited your game to one tileset - the image with tiles you use on your maps - for the whole game... and unlike XP they were small ones. VX made Parallax Mapping popular because of this. Also, removed the battler image. VX Ace was the version after VX, and... it fixed most of what VX did wrong. It also added noteboxes, which would be used by coders to set details of the data for plugins to check on the database instead of needing to put on the script itself like on XP and VX. That made it so you could just copypaste a script in your project ones and edit it on the database at any time. It also VX Ace is still popular at some countries. My own for example, most people used VX Ace over MV last I checked. RPG Maker MV, or just MV, made a few... changes. Coding was turned to javascript. That was so you could also turn your game into a site of a phone app (MV is for Mobile Version). But the biggest change, in my opinion, was that instead of a sscript window to paste scripts you can just put plugins on the manager, change the settings whoever made the plugin set there for you to change, and turn it on to use. And if you change your mind, you can just turn it off but keep there, no need to erase it all. It kept noteboxes too. The plugins made this version of RPG Maker MUCH more versatile and easier to change your game. Much less limitations if whoever made the plugins new what they were doing and the user followed the instructions and did not mix those that don't work together. It also brought sideviews battles back. MZ is the latest version, and... I have no idea what the Z means, it is a sequel? It was not changed enough to be MV Ace... Some code inside was changed, needing a change on the plugins it uses, and it now uses animations made in an external program instead of making them on rpg maker itself. The program is supposedly great for those, but... And it brought back ATB battles. ...I don't remember that many more changes.

@6min This is part of the reason why I made the jump to game maker studio a while back, adjusting weird stuff like that is super simple, just change the snap from 32x32 to 16x16 (it depends on sprite size really, but you can adjust it to basically whatever). The only down side was having to learn programming then coding the everything lol Not sure how I got here but these videos are fantastic, thank you for the helpful tips!

When it comes to mapping, I like elevation, but not in places where it makes no sense. Say, you're trying to make an orderly and modern city where cars are a thing. If all your methods to get from one level to another are staircases, how the hell can the cars get anywhere? Same for horses and carriages. Stairs are stupid in that context, and I currently don't know how to create ramps and hills with roads in RPG Maker MV. Lol. Also, if a city is designed to be on a flat plane for geography based reasons, then I really don't want to see random elevation. I like how elevation looks, but I need realism more. But I like smaller bits of elevation clearly not meant for vehicles. Then again, I'm an American. Our cities are more grid-like and more built with cars in mind than, say, European cities. I might be showing my stupidity here.

Most RPGMaker games seem to be based on anime and thus Japanese geography. In Japan they don’t design cities around cars, so I’d imagine a bit more elevation.

@Toastyfunnyguy
@Toastyfunnyguy 3 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure there's already stuff out there for that, look up "Yanfly event chase player" (for MV). If you're in another engine you just need to set the events move route to repeat and move towards player, and for on event touch it to go to the game over screen.

@@Toastyfunnyguy ooohh thank u! But how about player select item? Like player in library select bookshelf and it will say "there's too much book in here" then when player go outside library and they will come back inside, the bookshelf will say "there's too much book in here but looks weird, select one book? (Yes) (no)" How about that scene? Could that happen?
@Toastyfunnyguy
@Toastyfunnyguy 3 жыл бұрын
@@heyhalo3848 Yes, all you need for that to happen is a switch. Have an event turn on a switch when the player walks outside, and have a second page for the interact event on the bookshelf that is activated by the switch with the new dialogue/choices.

Quick question. If I Buy an art pack from the RPG Maker DLC list, do I have to also credit the original creator in the game?
@Toastyfunnyguy
@Toastyfunnyguy 9 ай бұрын
When I purchased an art pack for my game it had an explicit “read me” / “terms of use” that stipulated credit needed to be given. If you look hard for that and can’t find it, I’d assume you’re reasonably in the clear to not give credit. Don’t take this as legal advice 😂

@@Toastyfunnyguy Since I didn't buy or explicitly license any content directly from individual creators but from the DLC section of the RPG Maker MZ Steam Page it wouuld seem to me that the original creator, who gets paid and thus gets a fee for the fair use of their creation, should be sufficient. Glad to hear that it is unintentionally vague and murky.
