Of course everyone knows the Beatles were from Liverpool, but I still don’t think we make enough of what a special place Liverpool is- you can hear it here as he plays. It’s something to do with a sense of humour and spirit of playfulness. What the music scholar Stephen Nachmanovich calls ‘galumphing’. That’s the spirit of exploration and invention and I really do think it comes from that city, and all the narratives cultures it soaked up over the years from Irish, Jamaican, African seamen etc.

No disrespect to Paul McCartney but this is basic stuff. I'd love to see this sort of video from Elton John.

Okay let’s tell the TRUTH from all us Van Halen fans from 1978 - 1984 years!!! Eddie made Van Halen the world’s greatest rock band with his hands and the frankenstrat guitar. I seen Van Halen 3 times live all with original band members and I never once went to see diamond Dave sing! Plus Dave wasn’t even the best singer in the band. Michael Anthony was. So yes we all know Dave was on hard drugs and drinking to dress the way he did and act the way he did. Good video of the Frankenstrat. Ed is the greatest rock guitarist ever. RIP ED. We miss you!

I read music but I definitely don't use it when I play rock/pop on a piano or a guitar. I mostly use my music reading skills when I write for orchestra or when interpret old orchestral works. Classical pianists rely on sheet music to perform old classical works but most classical pianists are not great composers or improvisers. Knowing scales, chords, modes and chord inversions are really enough.

Chord piano AKA Songwriter Piano is how I play piano. There are thousands of songwriters who don’t read music and just know how to play chords on piano and on guitar. But that’s all you need to know.

The LE-1s were around in the 80s but I'm not sure if they were a thing in '82 and besides, they had a different headstock that's more along the lines of Kramer's beak headstock, rather than the Fender-style headstock of Blue.

The Black Strat with the angled bridge humbucker *was* actually salvaged. But it was modified into the TOM Strat. So you are correct that the guitar is unrelated to Vandy but it wasn't permanently smashed (at least in-studio).

The funny thing is the Beatles didn't just use simple chords and progressions. Apparently they just played around with the sounds, but they ended up doing some pretty sophisticated things. Moreso than what you see in almost any other popular music.

You kidding. The Beatles knew music theory. George Martin transcribed what they wrote on sheet paper. And they know mode and modulation and key change and temp change. They know Bach and Beethoven.
