Unfortunately is not just entry level developers, at least that's what I'm experiencing in the UK. I left my job due to some health issues, I was very confident that after putting myself together, I will easily get another job. I was wrong. The market is crazy. Companies are transitioning from remote to on-site/hybrid working. There are more and more job advertisements, where the 'equivalent commercial experience' bit after the degree requirement does not exist anymore. There is a lot ghosting going on. Recruiters talk to you about a role for half an hour and then you never hear back from them. Impossible to get any feedback, best case scenario you get some generic rejection email. The human element of the recruitment process completely missing. Requirements tech wise are also non-sense, the other day I read a mid-weight job spec where the right person supposed to have commercial experience with PHP, Python, NodeJS, React and Vue. What mid-weight developer can have all this experience in 3-4 years, not to mention the wage band they offered for the job was somewhere £35k-£40k .... insane. I've been trying to get a job for 4 months by now, hard to tell what the exact issue is because of the lack of feedback, but I have a feeling that not having a degree puts to the very bottom of applicants. I think any self-taught developer will be affected by this at some point. To get into the industry is quite easy, because you can be a good asset with a relatively small pay. But making the steps to the next levels is different. Once you become too experienced for junior developer roles, side projects are not enough.

Timely video, ive been trying to break into this job market for awhile, and I’ve been doing something really similar. So far I’ve only landed one client (besides some sites for friends from a cold call. A word to others who are choosing this route, if you have social anxiety or struggle with confidence this is HARD, beyond what is being discussed in the video. I can only do a few calls or pitches a week before I get overwhelmed. I think finding a sustainable starting pace is important. To supplement I am doing solo app development, which honestly plays much more to my strengths. I think being able to market yourself, and get clients is an amazing skill to have regardless though. Play to your strengths but build strength in yourself where you’re weak. I am already getting better at just talking to people and networking.

What do they look for in candidates other than technical skills and how to create a personality which is suitable for their organization ie makes us hard to overlook in interview process.. what book suggestions can help also..

The premise of this video doesn't make sense, entry level devs have always had the cost of training and ramp up time. So why is it all the sudden a deal breaker in 2024 but companies accepted it five or ten years back?

No one hires experienced devs either, I'm a 30 year developer in both military and space projects. All I get now is ghosting, someone calls that talks to me about how impressive my background is but nothing of substance happens.

Similar situation here. I have 3 years of experience, 2 as a freelance developer and then Data Science, AI and Data Engineering. They all say that I have good resume for being a junior but I'm never picked up. I recently talked to a HR recruiter about my situation and she said that in my case, they might be afraid of me job-hopping, so why waste all of that time educating me when they could hire a senior with kids that craves that stability?

I love how it’s stated as a given that recruiters and hiring managers can’t even spend 5 minutes on each candidate’s application due to volume restraints, but as an applicant I’m expected to do a laundry list of tasks that take a lot longer than 5 minutes even though I’m applying for hundreds of jobs.

2:30 No, the problem isn't skill gaps. The problem is work and experience gaps. You acquire said skill when you work in a real time work environment. YOU YOURSELF GOT TO THAT POINTS THANKS TO THAT. New hires are equally if not more qualified than you were when you started as a junior.

@@junior_jobs other way around, interview less. i bet that if you picked names out of a hat between mid-senior devs you'd get the same performance output in the long run...very few devs out here are being innovators in the field, most are just maintaining existing code with minor changes here n there

@@junior_jobs i understand looking for the 1% of the 1% when you're building something like Google's DeepMind, but let's face it, most companies are not building innovative technologies yet they're all following the hiring practices of tech giants like Google & Facebook who are constantly innovating and experiment. if i were hiring for your typical business operations need, yeah let the ATS do its thing, select the top 5 scored based on the tech stack and years of experience, interview 1 a day until you find the guy that fits the bill...if it happens to be the first guy, bammo done, close it, there's really no need to be out here going through thousands of applicants hoping to stumble on some untapped genius to maintain your landing page

I have not heard such nonsense for quite some time. Junior jobs are out there for people with 5 years of experience. No matter how an entry-level person brushes up their experiences, how many open resources are preset in their resume, or ten internships are included, they will receive close to zero chance of getting hired.

Even Senior level developers scour the internet for answers, maybe they are more proficient at it than a Junior would be. Obviously with AI, it is another tool to help out anyone nowadays. A lot of things are libraries, recycled code snippets that are perhaps altered ever so slightly to do the same exact thing. It isn't the old west like before. Technology is moving at an insane rate and will continue to do so.
@questcore636
@questcore636 2 ай бұрын
the industry is moving too fast is why, they need senior devs 3 years ago, not tomorrow, the industry needs to slow down and realize you're standing still waiting on senior devs that you're shutting out over 12 years

Some of these "skill gaps" are surprisingly basic. Maybe take the time to run tests and ensure that your code compiles before submitting a PR? Conscientiousness is a basic skill that even many experienced developers lack.

I'm 5 minutes in and I already hate this guy and this interview. This is so stupid, so the problem is that junior devs are not senior devs? So in previous years the junior devs of before already knew everything and didn't need to be taught anything and only now they do? No, the problem is globablization destroying the labor market in the West + AI making it so you need a lot less people to do the same job + a glut of people in tech. Why hire a westerner when you can hire 6 indians for the same price? WHy hire a junior when you have 50 seniors looking for a job? You have more people for fewer jobs, that's it, it has nothing to do with being too expensive to train new employees, and to even use that as a justification means you're either dumb, ignorant, or you're profitting from it somehow.
@angelg3642
@angelg3642 2 ай бұрын
Especially the issue with outsourcing for cheap labor. Indians are terrible developers that are only being hired because they are dirt cheap. I've had two indians interview me, one is senior and the other is mid. I've never in my life experienced such unprofessionalism and bs in my entire life. BUT HEY, THEY ARE GOD DAMN CHEAP 😂😂. I was interviewed for a SENIOR level developer while applying as a junior and at the end of the interview they said "welp, we messed up. We will interview you again because the senior interview isn't for you even though we though we can assess you on it". One of them asked me a question he didn't know the answer to which was straight up insane. Ended up getting rejected because I had to make an SQL task and forgot to enable aggregation by using Group By and because I had no experience with SCRUM methodology. Everything else was perfect BUT GOT REJECTED. So the person who made this video thinking the issue is the candidates.... Well I don't think so.

@AngelGiurov
@AngelGiurov 3 ай бұрын
I think the biggest reason is that the definition of a junior developer nowadays is a mid developer who's being paid junior salary. I have 2 years of experience as a junior developer, I have received perfect or near perfect scores in many technical assessments (90% to 100%) and I've still gotten rejected for the most BS reasons. One time I was told to write a pseudo code for a specific SQL task. I did it... I just forgot that you needed to use 'Group by' in order to allow aggregation to happen. That's the feedback I got after I got rejected. "Everything was great but you didn't complete that SQL task so you need to improve it further. We'd like to keep in contact for future possibilities". Sometimes you go in some deep knowledge and questions FOR A JUNIOR POSITION. Once while explaining how INDEX works I was asked by the interviewer if I knew what data structures works underneath the MySQL database. I just simply forgot the answer so I asked the interviewer to remind me since it was long ago when I read about it. He said "No worries, I don't remember it either."... I was interviewed to do CODE REVIEWS AS S JUNIOR. During my interviews sometimes I straight up got 80-90% of everything correct and still got rejected. The fault is within the companies... The interview questions and not even remotely close to what the job is going to be. Let's say I ace the interview and get the job.... How many of the things we talked about in the interview am I going to need when working ? Zero... Juniors are capable, companies are lazy when it comes to onboarding/guiding their staff and the hiring process is just way too outdated to find a capable candidate.
