Thank you, this was an illuminating demonstration of differences I never suspected. Looking back, I had noticed that Titebond 2 is a real mess to sand. So much of my woodwork needs to resist moisture (I don’t build instruments) that I’ve only used the TB2 and TB3 for decades now.
@earlsinstrumentsandtunes973216 сағат бұрын
Yes I would think that TB2 and TB3 would be excellent for furniture since it would be more moisture and shock resistant.

Hey Earl, I think that’s the exact reason that the IBG Epiphone Hummingbirds, made in Indonesia, sound so great. Overbraced with a thicker top. It adds weight, but what a beautiful tone. The Seagull S12 that you hold is now a better built S6, I think. Great work on this one, brother man 👍🏻

Nicely done Earl! I like cedar and redwood for tops. When I carve redwood for my tops they are left thicker since its softer than red spruce. Years ago I was carving a redwood top and it just came alive. When I checked the thickness, it was way thicker than any I had done before. I went ahead and left it at that and that mandolin was one powerful mandolin.
@earlsinstrumentsandtunes97322 ай бұрын
There it is! I like cedar and redwood tops too. I used to use it often for tops on my mandolins. I believe I have built two guitars of each wood. But it seems hard for me to leave the "standard" thickness and go a great amount more. However, this guitar shows the effect that can be achieved.

That's some damn fine work there Earl! I'm impressed with the consistent tone you managed to get from them all. But I'm totally smitten with the orange wood guitar. I've worked on tons of used guitars as well as repairs on them and new ones but I'm thinking I want orange wood for my first full build. Thanks for the tour!!
@earlsinstrumentsandtunes97322 ай бұрын
Thank you kindly Robert. Here is a tip you probably already know...but anyway. If you decide to build your first guitar with Osage Orange, I highly recommend that the box be glued together in January or February when the humidity is usually at the yearly low point. Reason being that the Osage Orange is kind of split prone. How do I know? My first build out of this wood split in several areas. I had glued it up in early summer.. I saved the top and it is on the one see here. Glued it up in February and not had any issues with it this time

@@earlsinstrumentsandtunes9732 Sound advice Earl. I live in Santa Fe, NM at 7000 feet elevation. I've seen humidity here in the single digits. I have often thought about th e timing of a build re: humidity, as a way to minimize cracks...thanks for the affirmation!!

I would truly like to see that Purple Heart guitar. The sounds really deep in bass. I like them both. And I am certain God will be glorified by their use! Actually, they both sound like a D-28 to me. Here at home, I was playing along with y'all on an Eastman E1D (Solid Sitka top with forward shifted and scalloped X bracing and solid Sapele back and sides). My inexpensive Eastman sounds more like a D-18. I cheated though as I just did simple rhythm strumming and made no attempt to do a Bluegrass style pick and strum of alternating Bass notes....which Gail does VERY well. BTW - Did you use a compensated saddle on either? You recently said you really liked the compensated saddle. This Eastman is compensated for the B string.
@earlsinstrumentsandtunes97325 ай бұрын
Yeah, it has got a lot of the old D18 Martin sound I think. I am quite pleased with it. But I could tell from that 1st one I built that the purpleheart wood has got some tone in it. I have another set waiting in the shop for a the next build, if I can get to it next winter.
@andronikostheophilos5 ай бұрын
@@earlsinstrumentsandtunes9732 I would think Purple Heart would be denser than Mahogany? It certainly is an attracted wood. My brother used to be a cabinet builder, and I have watched him use Purple Heart many years ago. I was struck by how attractive it was. At that time (late 70s to early 80s) he told me it was an expensive wood.
@earlsinstrumentsandtunes97325 ай бұрын
@@andronikostheophilos Yes purple heart is quite a bit denser and harder than most mahoganys. It is actually just a tad denser and harder than Indian rosewood. That hardness to weight ration is where it is at. Brazilian rosewood is a little less dense, but it is harder. and I believe that is what makes Brazilian so good. From what I can find out, Brazilian has got the biggest ratio of hardness per unit weight ratio. There is a lot of woods harder but they are also greatly heavier. Purple heart is close to Brazilian in this aspect. osage orange is also real close. low weight and high hardness = good sound, generally speaking. there are exceptions like butternut and sassafras which are almost as light as spruce.
@earlsinstrumentsandtunes97325 ай бұрын
I put no stain in the middle of that back.....just a little black shading on the points and the scroll area. that is the natural wood color in the largest part of the back.

What about an electric guitar with a crack right near where the neck bolts on the body?? What glue wld you recommend Sir?? The crack is on the body of the guitar.
@earlsinstrumentsandtunes97326 ай бұрын
that depends on the nature of the crack....if it is a tight crack, (no gap), I would use thin cyanoacrylate (super glue). But some experience is necessary to prevent a bad scene. You could use a toothpick to transfer the glue to the crack one small drop at a time. I have seen valuable guitars ruined with super glue spills, so some care is needed. I have had good sucess with this method using a tiny metal spatula; squirting some glue into a soda bottle cap and keeping the glue bottle away from the guitar body. Then filling the crack drop by drop with the toothpick..... If the crack is wide and has to be clamped, I would use titebond original. work it in good, clamp it tight then wipe away the excess. hope this helps you!

I once found a really nice 6 inch x 12 inch x 30 inch block of western red cedar being used for a porch step for in a cabin in the Smoky mountains. The property owner gave to me and it has made some pretty good mandolins! (edit, fixed typo)
