Today was my first day ever behind the wheel of a CMV. Im in school rn and we practiced straight line backing. I didnt run over any cones but i couldnt keep the trailer straight. My instructor said i was overcorrecting and chasing. How do i keep from ending up crooked in the lane? My trailer and tractor are straight but im not straight in the lines.
@RushinTruckin20 күн бұрын
@@brookespraggins3181 I’ve been driving now for 6 years with 600,000 miles. You’ll very rarely ever straight line back and never have to make adjustments as you go. The key, as I mention in the video, is to make them micro adjustments, NOT freak out over corrections.

I tried it in class and panicked again. I tried it but waited too late. I went into a snaked and used 3 pull ups. My trailer was crooked when I started and I didn’t adjust it. The instructor got in the truck with me and did it for me. I was demoralized. I’m determined.

Excellent video sir! Ole flatbed driver here. I’ve never seen one of these trailers in action. One question does ads have driver facing cameras?
@RushinTruckin2 ай бұрын
@@adamhilton667 they didn’t but unfortunately, all their new trucks are coming equipped with not only driver facing cameras but cameras all around the truck that can see all the way down both sides of the trailer. They’re also AI equipped and can detect if you’re distracted driving (ie supposedly you’re only allowed to take 6 drinks per hour or it’ll tell on you!!!) They’re also implementing a phone policy where you can’t talk to anyone other than work related conversations while working 😡🤦🏼♂️. I don’t drive for them anymore but I talk to a guy who does. Hello 👋 I’ve watched your review on Knight … I know that was a few years ago …you mentioned that you are in central Florida … I’m also in central Florida and I’m about a quarter way through CDL school … do you know any companies that will hire new CDL graduate? Thanks in advance. Also beautiful scenery I plan to move to Arizona one day 🙏🏼🙂
@RushinTruckin2 ай бұрын
@@umiiscasa5087 yeah, Knight out of Lakeland. Good starter company. Get on with them, get a year of safe miles then start looking again. Knight has very low pay. I would only suggest going to them as a rookie. It depends what you want to do. Florida is terrible for over the road freight making it difficult for companies to get you home often. If you want to be home daily and aren’t afraid of hard work, look into McLane. There’s also Old Dominion that’s pretty good (you’ll need your doubles/triples and hazmat endorsements) There will always be options of who to drive for as long as you maintain a clean record.

@RushinTruckin2 ай бұрын
That’s crazy but regardless of how off your alignment is, the 12 position is where your hand is placed when the wheels are pointing forward, not based on how the steering wheel is oriented

Whats your advise or tips for offset backing the first version? No one has full information everyone give the first two steps and then after that they just say back up. That doesn't help.
@RushinTruckin4 ай бұрын
In school, we were taught to turn the tractor till we saw a certain point on the trailer, straighten, then turn the other way till we saw a different point on the trailer then straighten. With every truck/trailer combo being slightly different, me giving you that info would be useless. Offsets, parallel, and alley all require a lot of practice to gain the feel needed to pull them off. Each brand of truck turns quicker/slower than the other so i can’t give you a time to hold the turn either. No throw in day cabs, which turn very quick versus a sleeper. In other words, the variables make it very difficult to explain via text only. Get yourself a cheap model truck and trailer combo and set these scenarios up and walk through them as if you’re in the cab. Think about what you need to do. If you’re offsetting from left to right, you need to first push the noise of the trailer to the left which means steering to the left (point the truck to the right). You don’t need to go all the way to jack knife cuz of the amount of time it takes to get back straight, you will have over shot your spot. Once you’re straight, you straight back until the tail end of your trailer is about 10 feet out of the spot you’re going into. (Another variable that will make a huge difference is where your tandem’s are set at (further up means quicker turns and more tail swing and the opposite for tandems all the way back)) Once you’re there, you’ll be positioned roughly 45 degrees pointing left of your spot so you need to push the nose of your trailer right in order to line it up with the spot. Turn your wheel right then just before you’re lined up, steer all the way left until you’re straight. If your timing was good, all you have to do at this point is straight back into the spot. Remember, GOAL Get Out And Look!! Especially when practicing. Do it as often as you need but get good enough to where you only need 1 or 2 cuz that’s all you’ll get during your test. I hope that helps
