The reason why Izzudin/Goh did not celebrate after their historic win was made known to the Malaysian press post-match. They explained that on seeing that they had won the game due to Ren XY injury, they felt that it wasn't right to celebrate that way. Many people commented why they did not concentrate their attack towards the injured Ren. Some even went as far as calling them foolish and playing with no game plan. But the truth was that they avoided attacking Ren BECAUSE of that. They felt it just wasn't the right thing to do. Well, if that's not two fine gentlemen sportsmen, then what is.

I agree that the BWF tournament participation requirements do seem very demanding and, judged by the number of players arriving at court taped-up like an extra from the Mummy, there is an argument for saying that many are turning up both below par and flirting with potential chronic injury. Tomoka Miyazaki has been helped to physically develop almost beyond recognition from just a year ago. At just 18 she is already developing the tools and attributes she will need to compete at the very highest level of women's singles. I just hope that in this rush to realise her huge potential her coaches won't exhaust her sheer enthusiasm and joy for playing out of her. She always looks so happy on court.

19:15 statement of the video imo. 100% agree. The state of top-player badminton feels kind of week in the knees right now. And I think international volleyball leagues do it right with challenges for net touches and contact faults too. Volleyball matches have an additional official that is responsible for calling stuff like this too, which could translate to a badminton service judge taking on some more responsibility.

Thanks for pointing out those participation rules. I think this might be the single most reason for these weird performances. I also think that the number of points in each set has to be reduced. In so many torunaments its a matter of last man/woman standing, especially the singles dicipline. If conditions in the arena are bad, you often get a very long 2nd set, which the winner of the first gives away. Boring as hell.

For the Jonatan shuttle deflection thing, even though it is a shame, I think he might have done better if he just focused on the next point rather than arguing with the umpire. I haven’t seen a decision being reversed in these situations before. Similar situation at LKY vs Anders, he argued abit then loses focus. But getting anxious for LKY becoming anxious in closing rallies is totally another thing 😂. And watching Kodai plays make me feel exhausted as well. I hopes he can develop his attacks more. Great comments and thoughts on China open! I personally don't agree with you on abolishing tournament participantion requirements, but rather change them a bit. BWF can spread big tournaments, so we don't have 2-3 high level tournaments in a row with no breaks. Another idea is just decrease min required number of tournaments by 1 in each category. And for many years I still complaining that at top level badminton tournaments with lots of cameras around, we don't have a review system, that doesn't require any more money or technology. Net touches, double touch, touch before going out are all can be reviewed on a big screen for all to see if we have amend the rules. TV viewers can see it, but not umpires or players - just not fair. Players should be able to request at least once per game this.
@BenBeckmanBadmintonАй бұрын
I didn't talk about the scheduling but that is most certainly an issue too. I think doing both would make great sense but I fear BWF is focusing on money. What i found really weird and exausting and for this type is a perfect example just like the Japan/Korea Open. Is that you put 2 good tournaments right around the corner. I do understand to make Asian / Europe Tour to ease players flights and travels. But for either Health of athlete etc, you cant be at 100 % . For this example Lei/Axelsen played the final and had to play 30 h after the final after doing a complete week of high level of badminton. Here it was even more difficult since for example viktor had his flight canceled/rescheduled/canceled. It cause stress and you arrive late at night at hotel and the event organizers instead of putting them late evening like ( they should have done) they put them in afternoon. You end up with athlete who are not at 100% + are tired from travel stress. And ends up with a lot of WO or very bad performance. Japan/korean open was the same a lot of surprising results etc. I remember when Denmark/French open was held in same time, We as french were so happy to see LCW LD and other big names coming to the french open , ending up seeing them had to WO a lot of times because of exausting.
@BenBeckmanBadmintonАй бұрын
Yes 100% agree, I was going to mention the scheduling as an issue too. Putting a Super 100 at the end of a 3 week block of 500s and 750s doesn't make sense. There certainly needs to be a lot of discussions around all of this. We shouldn't just have tournaments for tournaments sake. Quality over quantity (for the most part)
@Ey3shi3ldtvАй бұрын
@@BenBeckmanBadminton BWF has a lot to adapt to because the way people consume sports nowadays has changed. Esports, in just a decade, have produced better shows than 98% of traditional sports. The rule that requires players to show up to a certain number of tournaments, or face fines, is problematic. It forces athletes into a tough spot-they either play half-heartedly, risking their reputation and disappointing their fans (even if they don't want to), or, for those who can’t afford the fines, they have to fake an injury to avoid competing. Additionally, badminton faces much more competition from other sports now. What I find amusing is that there are plenty of channels posting content taken from official matches. While this isn’t great from a copyright perspective, I personally don’t mind. But athlete wich are playing cant use this content to promote themselves... In France, thanks to major streamers and content creators, table tennis saw a 200% increase in license applications and a 500% jump in sales of table tennis equipment, largely due to the exposure the Lebrun brothers got on TV and streams. The Popov brothers in badminton are doing something similar, but they aren’t getting nearly the same recognition-even though there are 220,000 registered badminton athletes in France. When I watch some video(more like ig stories ) of Top 12 club matches in France, the stadiums are empty, with no audience and no streams available (except for semi-finals). This is shocking because it’s the TOP 12! I’ve been playing for 15 years, and clubs around my city are packed, with 100-person waiting lists. You have to sign up for tournaments 2-3 months in advance to get a spot. My club opened registrations for a 300-player tournament, and it filled up in just 2 hours. So, while there’s clearly a large number of people playing, there’s little effort to grow badminton’s audience. Regarding major tournaments, the scheduling is brutal. Winners get only one day of rest (not counting travel time), which is far from enough to recover for two consecutive high-level tournaments. You see players like An Se-young covered in bandages-soon, she’ll look like a mummy at this rate-despite being incredibly successful.

You are probably correct about the Japanese players wearing the club kit, but not about the coaching. I've seen coaches in previous years in Japan vs Japan matches, also if I remember correctly, they have had national kit but with club sponsors in some cases. Anyway, great seies, rsally enjoyed it 😊. Re shuttle touching racket in the match with Jonathan Christie; if the umpire doesn't see it, the service judge can signal that it did touch; if nobody notices then that's too bad. I'm not in favor of having video review, I think that would interrupt the game more, and be more unfair to players not on TV courts. Challenges can be used in an unfair way to break the opponents concentration. Many years ago I was playing mixed and at match point for us the opponents hit a smash long. They insisted that I had touched the shuttle (no umpires). It hadn't - was at least 6 inches away. They then argued that they had heard it, but this would have been impossible with 11 other games in the same hall. After a long discussion, we agreed to play a let, mainly because my partner was in the same club as the opponents, something I'll never do again. Anyway in the end we lost.
@BenBeckmanBadmintonАй бұрын
The coach vs coach situation you've seen before, was that 2 A team players playing each other? If not then this would explain that. It could also be a similar situation to this China Open. I get your points about VAR, it's why I said on the surface it seems a simple solution but it requires far more discussion for the valid point you make. The same would go for a few other issues too

"Many years ago I was playing mixed and at match point for us the opponents hit a smash long. They insisted that I had touched the shuttle (no umpires). After denying three time, I gave up arguing but the girl seemed to resent this so much that she didn't like to play games with me any more. I always feel sad about this.

@@BenBeckmanBadminton I think the Japanese coaches are more about the company team coaches from say Daihatsu or NTT East, who may also be national team coaches present at the event. I don't recall a match where only one Japanese player had a coach, so I guess there's a gentleman's agreement.

The BWF does seem to be either in denial or dare I say it, rather amateurish when it comes to dealing with mistakes. It's not uncommon to see bad umpiring but with no action taken by BWF to rectify the issues. VAR can definitely be useful to reduce such issues, but only if utilized in the correct manner. By allowing umpires to just get off so easily despite their mistakes, BWF is actually holding badminton back from progressing as a sport. It's actually quite embarrassing for BWF that as a professional body, it does poorly in overall governance.

For the controversy part, not sure a vittinghus is a good reference, far from me to make generalities, but danish players are known to not be very fair. Some would even say they tend to cheat. About Weng, I think he was also robbed during a match ; the referee said his brush was on the wrong side of the net and... Something must be made ; there is a hawk eye but no video ; hopefully it will come. In the meantime, I don't understand why they just don't replay the point when there is a doubt ; it's not fair, but still a better solution than giving a point to the wrong player. And that's what is done in amateur badminton. good talk as always, thank you Ben !
@BenBeckmanBadmintonАй бұрын
I'm not sure labelling Danish players as cheaters is all that fair. How many times have you seen this sort of situation happen, and the player it benefits admits to it? It doesn't happen often, so I feel it's a little unfair to paint the Danes with that brush. Secondly, further in the interview Vittinghus said he spoke to Lee Cheuk Yiu about the situation and Lee Cheuk Yiu said he'd have done the same as Vittinghus in that situation.
@benj4840Ай бұрын

@@BenBeckmanBadminton I heard this mostly about juniors as competition is very dense for danes to become pro. It may be inaccurate (still heard it from different sources). What I want to say his danes are used to not giving anything away ; still we saw Axelsen giving back a point unfairly obtained after hitting the net (against Chou Tien Chen in Dubai). Taht(s why I hate generalities. My opinion is : if you know you comitted a fault, there's no honor in winning the point, whatever is the score. And as amateurs, we don't really have the choice to trust each other on the court, it's a bit sad if this mentaity is lost in the highest competitions. It's a bit naïve but still better than being paranoïd. Badminton needs a VAR that could be called by referees when neede, as it is for hawk eye when shuttle is unseen I think. Examples : - for net plays (we saw lot of referee errors this year, and if video can't help, just remake the point) - for shuttle being touched without anyone noticing (by the racket but also by clothes, hair, ...)

They do have a few that are starting to show a good level too like Gunji and Akechi. Gunji also a world junior champ but injuries have plagued her. She's on her return though. Hopefully one of those 2 can join Miyazaki in the top tier

So can someone summarize why all the big names withdrew?. Was it because theyre all boycotting something or what
@BenBeckmanBadminton22 күн бұрын
It wasn't that long after Olympics and most were either taking a break or letting injuries heal. There was no boycott. For one reason or another, time was needed

You did a great job of breaking down the bulk of it, but some of points I just wanted to mention (and sorry if this is a long post): - I think it's worth talking about Vitidsarn and his mentality. He seems too relaxed to fulfil his potential. Let me explain: - Before the China Open he took a nearly 2 month break, and while he did make the semi-final, he looked totally shot in the 2nd game. His stamina was totally done and Kodai was absolutely in control. It's plain to see that the break hurt his physicality, which is important in a sport like badminton. This isn't a one-time thing either; he took a break after he became world champion and a similar thing happened. He almost seems casual. Look at his reactions when he loses important tournament such as the super 1000s, world champs and olympics. Smiling and giggling like he's there for the fun of the game rather than the wins. - On the contrary, when Lin Dan loses, he swears, looks angry, or drop kicks his racket high into the air (don't forget taking off the medal and trying to refuse the crown). When Viktor loses, he is more gracious than Lin Dan but you can tell he hates it. He sometimes shouts or looks annoyed. What I'm saying is their "driven to win at all costs" mentality has helped them fulfil their potential, and it's a shame Vitidsarn isn't the same way. - He has so many weapons. The best deceptions, decent movement, great stamina when he's fit, great shot quality, some of the best hand-eye co-ordination ever, very good defense. He reminds me of Momota, or a male version of Tai Tzu Ying (a bit). The only thing he lacks is a cannon of a shoulder to 1 hit kill points but 1) that could come with time and 2) isn't necessarily essential if the rest of your game is so good. I just hope that, 5-7 years later, he will not become the Nick Kyrgios or Gael Monfils of badminton - immensely talented physically, and has some of the best hand-eye co-ordination in badminton history, but his mind prevented him from truly living up to his potential, making him one of the biggest underachievers in badminton history. He is young and could turn it around, but if no changes are made, then I fear this path is where he's headed. - Kodai has a mental block/bad nerves when it comes to finals. Unlike someone like Lin Dan, who is famous for clutching, Kodai is a Lee Chong Wei, famous for choking. His record in finals is 2-5, but: - One of the wins was only a super 100, and the other was the China Masters which is less important than the China Open (which comes right before it). So it could well be argued that his record in more major finals is 1-5 or even 0-5. If he doesn't get over it, he too could be remembered as an underachiever. I hope he works on this. - Finally, I just want to talk about Viktor and why I think we can expect his loss rate to increase in the following years. - If you look at the past greats, they all changed their strategy when they aged/their physicality started declining to keep on top. Lin Dan became a more tactical player, as he could no longer smash as hard or as relentlessly as he used to. Lee Chong Wei became more attacking to keep up as you said in your 2011 world championship video. Momota changed to a more attacking style to keep up. Chen Long became more conservative due to age and blisters (ouch). - Viktor, however, has played the same way for over 10 years. Make his opponent hit high, smash their high shot, follow up if needed, rinse and repeat. That's it. That's Viktor's strategy. It has worked very well thus far due to his height and the fact that he has one of the best jumps of any MS player ever - 2021-2024 Olympic Viktor must have stood a solid meter in the air at times, creating unreturnable angles. - However, now I think he is slowly beginning to lose his stamina, and if someone resists his attack and is able to make the scoreline close or prolong the rallies, he can make errors due to the fatigue. His playstyle is a very tiring one and stamina has always been a weakness of his - if you've watched Viktor against the likes of Chen Long and especially Momota you'll know that. - If Viktor does not transition to a slower, more tactical, less strenuous style to conserve stamina, I think his winning days might be limited. And, most importantly, Viktor does not seem like someone who wants to change - he seems like someone who wants to play like he has ALWAYS played rather than potentially change due to his aging body. I'll leave it there. Any discussion is welcome!

21:38 hahaha I remember a controversial point in a final between Chou Tien Chen and Anthony Ginting, end of last year I think or beginning of this year. It clearly stole the match from CTC in my opinion and BWF didn't post the replay and deleted the direct right after the match. the whole tournament was there (maybe still is) but not the MS final. BWF hides most of referee's problems, don't communicate about it, nor try to fix them apparently.
@BenBeckmanBadmintonАй бұрын
Hahahaha, yeah they definitely go on damage control and avoid the issues. Whenever I've tried to do videos on this for them they flat out refuse. Anything mildly controversial needs avoiding at all costs

yes.. Lcy vs ginting also like that.. and in the match poin no less.. should bwf use challenge like var in football?
