how to do it to myself?
@bodyworksdwnyc

Might be a bit hard to do to yourself as the angles are all different but not at all impossible. Try crossing your ankle onto your other knee in a figure 4 and that should make it easier to get at the right muscles on yourself :)

What would a client complaint be requiring this technique? I think most of us do not breathe properly utilizing the diaphragm. I incorporate deep, slow breathing with my client causing movement at the belly and not at the shoulders. It is a wake-up call for many as they re-learn how to breathe.
@bodyworksdwnyc
@bodyworksdwnyc 2 ай бұрын
Great question! Honestly this is work that I do for most client complaints, although it might show up sooner or later in a series depending on how intense the current issue is and how much I need to balance providing immediate relief vs long term support. I like to cue "360" breathing, ie the entire ribcage should expand and contract (yep, without extra lifting in the shoulders and neck) with a slight belly rise at the end of the inhale (most lift belly first instead of ribs/sternum). I think for most clients, the diaphragm gets mis-recruited for postural support which doesn't allow it to relax on the exhale....requiring using the ancillary breathing muscles more (scalenes, serratus, abs, pecs, etc). For the complaints that really need this work: any back pain for sure, as well as shoulder pain, neck pain. Basically anything attached to the ribs :) I like to say "there is no real 'right' way to breathe....but plenty of 'wrong ways'.....usually any that involve too much control over what should be run by your brainstem so that you cerebrum can do stuff like art and science!"

@angelinastillions4708 great question! Actually, I have a hiatal hernia myself (just found out last year during a CAT scan for my heart). This should be fine as long as you go easy and it’s not causing sharp pain (which really is true for anyone).

Will this help a stroke patient with a weak arm
@bodyworksdwnyc
@bodyworksdwnyc 4 ай бұрын
Hi, it might help some, especially if part of the issue is a restriction in the rotator cuff (often happens during fall which gets overlooked while treating the stroke). That being said, if the weakness is mostly due to neurological issues it will only help some and passive and active movements + OT/PT is going to be far more helpful. Hope that helps!

I mention the “5th quad” and that science is still not solid on whether it’s there or not. While more research is needed there is a growing body of studies finding it in a majority of cadavers: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34564196/

This link is a collection of the various studies done so far (9) for a total of close to 300 cadavers studied. So, not a huge sample size but so far there is support for a 5th quad!

when you told him to bring his bent knee to the left side , did he have to move his foot over the right knee?
@bodyworksdwnyc
@bodyworksdwnyc 5 ай бұрын
Hi, great question! I didn’t have him crossing his foot over to the other side, just placed on the bolster in line with his hip. Since the goal of having him bend the knee is to give slack to psoas and iliacus by shortening them, you would be giving less of that by crossing over. It certainly wouldn’t be “wrong” to try that and may give differing results such as stretching the hip external rotators more….which could be cool with many clients. I’d say try it out and see how it goes!

These techniques should definitely only be used and applied by a fully trained and licensed massage therapist! That being said it would be extremely difficult for a non-trained person to cause the kind of damage you are describing unless they used extreme pressure such that you'd want to immediately ask them to stop and/or sudden forceful movements. Even those are unlikely to do lasting damage unless there is an underlying structural defect such as a malformed vertebrae or floating bone chip due to a prior whiplash incident.

Such helpful tips for bodyworkers! Our nature is to be caregivers, which means too often we get so caught up in helping our clients that we forget to look after ourselves. Unfortunately, this causes all kinds and overuse injuries for us, which is one of the reasons too many of us can only stay in this profession for a few years:/ Looking forward to this workshop so I can better look after my body mechanics!:)

@bodyworksdwnyc

No, but it’s one of the biggest and hardest to envision. Pectoralis minor also directly rolls the shoulder forward. In addition pec major can too, but indirectly by pulling the humerus (upper arm bone) forward and into internal rotation. Hope that helps!
