Player obviously did not know the rules and the ref should have known that when he saw him mark and could have simply said "you cant mark". By waiting he put the rules over the game, and if you dont understand that, you dont understand sportsmanship. if the opponent is a good sportsman he will play the ball as it lies which is within the ball in hand rules. You shouldnt have to know the minutia of every rule in order to play, and taking advantage of a simple lapse is caring more about winning than earning the win.
