I would love to see ARRI make sub 20K camera. I think it would open another market for them. Listen, ARRI will always operate in the high end movie making space of their sensor and reliability. If you look at the trends, there is emerging media in KZbin, podcasting, etc. The smaller production companies will own either Canon or Sony. There is room for ARRI in this space.

I don't think there is a strong enough demand for an.Arri camera like this in today's media landscape. Nowadays, it's more of a preference to shoot on an ARRI Alexa rather than a necessity. Sony, Red, Canon and Blackmagic - they all offer good cameras with good sensors. Sure the Arri sensor is slightly better, but it's not a necessity. Plus, working with an Arri camera means you need a bigger crew and more money. I've heard that the Alexa 35 sales in New York City were very disappointing, but is it really a surprise given the current trends? Sadly, high end film market is shrinking while the low budget production market is expanding - just look at how the population consumes media majority of the time; on smartphone apps and laptops. It's time to wake up. This base model Alexa 35 may boost sales temporarily, but if they want to stay relevant in the industry long-term, they need to change their approach soon.

Why are we paying 50k when we can get just as good of quality for 10k. let's not act like other companies are not right there with them on quality. They also never drop the price of there older cameras making it impossible for newer cinematographers to grow in the system. There is a market outside of film school and we don't get to see Arri unless we have a good budget.

I don’t agree with 24:06. I would argue younger generations grow with ARRI Cameras on Set. No DP buys an Alexa 35 and sets foot on a set for the first time. People grow with arri cameras for instance as PA or AC. I don’t think it should be the goal for anyone to buy an arri camera because you will never see the return / rotation / use a rental house does, neither can you offer all the accessories needed for each film… -AC from Munich

I feel like they could easily take their old sensors from cameras they don't produce anymore and put them into more convenient bodies at a small cost. Just think about the Alexa classic right now, still a fantastic sensor, you can buy it second hand for £3-5K, but it's so unwieldy and big. But with today's technology, why couldn't they reinvent the body for the classic sensors (and others they've made since) and bring that to the market as a cheaper model to their flagship. They could probably even boost the old sensors a bit too, stack them, whatever. Bet they would sell like hotcakes - Get a classic Arri image that is proven in films people have grown up with but at a fraction of the cost in a modern body. I know I would.

When I here the Arri license prices, not mention the price for the base model, I'm so thankful to companies like Blackmagic Design, Red and Nikon, Sigma that they too can offer something valuable! But I'm not blaming Arri, It's OK, it is their policy and they work for their targeted customers. But soon they'll need to adjust to the changing film industry landscape anyway, that's for sure. And it's not necessarily a bad thing for Arri, I even think it'll help them to grow into a mass production manufacturer. Also, if we look into cars analogy, Mercedes-Benz has Maybach or AMG, VW - Bugatti, but they also have A-class. I doubt anybody driving Veyron somewhere in Dubai experience any discomfort realizing that next car in the lane is a Golf. This is what makes those companies to be great, and their technologies - the most advanced. In short - Yes, I want a teeny-tiny 15 000$ Arri)))) And, please, don't take my words seriously, I'm just taking part in the discussion.

Vehicles are sold in a similar way. Base models and Fully Loaded models. Seems like they're just looking to capture a larger market if it exists. Its not unusual, cinemas do this too. They used to sell one base price ticket but now they've got student prices, senior discounts, etcetera; it's still the same film. But you know like Johnnie says; they need money quarter to quarter to meet whatever their plan demands. I suspect their inputs to production are just way high, that could also be do to high labor costs (management) and high borrowing costs which also havent fallen much. They got caught selling a super niche product during the largest economic downturn, kinda not surprising.

I'm old and what comes with being old is a sense of history. Your video has made me wonder how ARRI (a company that I love BTW) has come to this place of only making cameras for elitist filmmakers. Back in the 1960s and 70s, their film cameras were priced higher than most but still somewhat affordable. They had the Arri S and 16BL and 35-2C. Now when I see ad that says "New Budget Friendly camera from Arriflex" I have to chuckle. Budget friendly for who? Bill Gates? A $35,000 camera is NOT a budget friendly camera. BTW, Don't kill the messenger... I still love you.

Look the new B MAGIC camera with its new sensor chasing BAYER will eventually surpass ARRI’s sensor tech. Just like anything in this construct. It can be done. Ego has been ruling this industry waaay too long and this is why it’s crumbling and will go further down the black hole. It’s inevitable.

I feel like Arri is riding a very thin and dangerous line here. Their only advantage is their sensor technology, and I have a feeling Sony and other manufacturers might just be one or two generations from catching up. Both Sony and Canan have versions of the dual gain architecture sensors. Just some refinement needed and Arris competitive advantage will be gone.
@geoffreybassett67412 күн бұрын
Agreed. Additionally, there is a ceiling for how good a sensor needs to be before its "good enough". In my opinion FX6 & C400 have hit that point in their RAW profiles, someone who knows what they are doing can get an image 99% of the way there. Those cameras are so cheap you can just buy two of them and not have to rent.
@nitram42422 күн бұрын
@@geoffreybassett6741 Most other camera manufacturers hit the point of "good enough" a couple of years ago, and are knocking on the doors of "on-par" and "better" now. If they ever actually got on par or better than Arri, then its game over for Arri.

The Amira was 35k at launch. Of course currencies have inflated since than. Something in the 25k-30k range could be interesting for ARRI. OK this is long, Johnny, but you asked... 😊 I've been using an F6 Mki for 4 years now and love it. A flexible work horse, it's like the mini Pyxis everyone's wanted for years ;-) Run it light with a side handle and mobile phone as a monitor (with full menu control), or rig it up fully. I run mine with an evf and monitor for some shoots. Small npf plus V-mount on Nitze QR mount means you can hot swap. Get BRaw with a Video Assist, or Prores Raw with a Ninja. But honestly the Prores 422 footage is more than fine for most jobs. If you *really* want h.265 422 you can record it on a Ninja. But I've found the 420 h.265 is still very good for most of my needs, typically in very high dynamic range scenes in the snowy Alps. It may technically only have something like 11.6 stops dr in the lab, but when you know how to expose and grade it, it seems to act more like 14 stops. However it can take a while to learn how to do this as there's no cst for it in Resolve. Create some powergrades and it's then a breeze. It shoots 120fps in 2.4:1 4k, not limited to 100, and 60 fps in 2.1:1 6k, plus a 5k 60 option which crops very slightly. It's anamorphic heaven with 3:2 Open Gate and a 4k full sensor 3:2, plus S35, and pixel to pixel so you effectively get 3 focal lengths at 4k. Set up a shortcut button and switch in a flash. Also 4:3 and 6:5 anamorphic. Swappable mounts - EF, M, PL, E mount, MFT, with eND available on the EF and PL mounts. If you add a RVLVR Clutch handle you can program so many things to the 2 dial wheels. When Z-cam first announced some of the specs of the Mkii, it was due to have Cfexpress type A cards, but they quickly listened to feedback from their user base on FB, and within about 2 weeks confirmed they'd switched to type B. I somehow don't see larger brands being this responsive to user feedback. Kinson and the team are stars. OK, that's enough gushing. I like it. It's a work horse. It's never let me down through snow, ice, and heat. It's good with batteries. It's strong in low light. Its rolling shutter isn't great, but learn its limits and it's fine. Yes, I also use a S5iix and an R5C, but I still prefer shooting with the F6 ;-) I kinda wish they'd updated the sensor for the Mkii, but it's still amazing value. @johnny, hit me up if you'd like more in depth user insights 😉

The Alexa Mini Classic is still a more practical camera. Yes it lacks some of low light performance and the insane dynamic range but it’s more than good enough. And what it lacks in these areas it makes up for with 200fps shooting, smaller files sizes, and much lower cost.

Regarding Zcam: I've been using the S6 for four years. It is such an underrated camera. Shoots 6K open gate even. Shoots ProRes in all flavours. Has interchangeable lens mount. You can put on a Rvlvr grip and it basically turns the camera into a run and gun device. Images coming off of it are very nice, Hasn't failed me once.

"It looks almost as good" or "It's good enough" is an argument not only made by KZbinrs, but also made by many producers and productions. I'm a working DP based in NYC and I have to say it's getting tougher to give legitimate reasons to productions to justify hiring an Arri camera over a Sony or a Red. Sure, I'd love to use Arri as often as I can, but jobs vary widely and more projects tend to shoot with the Venice, FX9, FX6, FX3. I'd say less than 20% of my projects would absolutely NEED an Alexa Mini LF or Alexa 35. High end productions like big studio movies and shows can certainly warrant Arri cameras, but even then lots of those productions have been using cameras like FX3 and Komodo because there are certain shots that are simply harder to pull off with a larger camera like Alexa 35. Majority of the market is looking for EFFICIENT and CREATIVE ways to film. Arri cameras require a bigger team, and therefore more money, which many productions nowadays can't afford. Gone are the days when investors eagerly poured money into films. Nowadays, more than 2/3 of the media produced are consumed through smartphones and laptops so an expensive Alexa camera isn't necessary. It's unfortunate, but Arri needs to evolve with the times or it will inevitably struggle to be relevant in the coming years.
@FrankGlencairn3 күн бұрын
A cheap(ish) ARRI is IMHO not gonna happen. The only point they have over other cameras is the ALEV sensor. If they use the same sensor in a cheap camera, why would you buy a 50000-70000 camera, if you get the same image out of a 20000 camera? If they build a camera with - let's say - a Sony sensor, why would anybody buy that? For the ARRI sticker? I don't think so.
@priyeshpv3 күн бұрын
You may be right. But there`s a huge problem. If they stay like this, charging very high prices for cameras I mean, they may very soon end up going bankrupt. I fear that lowering the prices substantially is the only way to even stay in business for a bit longer.

Arri is in a tough spot for sure. Making a cheaper Arri camera sort of goes against what it's known for. But holding their ground and their expensive price tags during the fast changing industry landscape with competitors making good cameras for much cheaper is only going to make them lose out more and more on the market share.
