also had a JVC HD100. sometimes dub 720p24 to beta SP, or producers took the tapes. Made a ton money on that camera, and the C300 mk1 that followed.

My best camera EVER purchased was the Panasonic GH5. Ahead of its time and I was use to Manual Focus. Next best was the Sony A7s3, my current camera.

An episode I can relate to' finally Worked on Canon XL1 and later JVC251HD , then Dslr happend and I just waited for years to see what would happen.. working on Sony's eng cams meanwhile. Got an Gh4 and was amazed' but still not convinced.. And to be honest, on the cheap side because indeed there was a better camera every 6 months.. So rentals were justified in my work. Nice you both mention this. Owning above 3k worth camera body is a very personal choise 😊😮

34:43 - Still in late 2024, a very reliable and well performing gimbal for bigger cameras is the Crane 3S, it works amazingly well. Pair it with the Smallrig ring accessory mount and add two side handles, it works really well.

On your thoughts on the FS7 into FX9. I just bought the FX6 this fall after having put the purchase off for so many years. On some level it's a bad purchase, since I was able to get better images out of my S1H, but the convenience and confidence the FX6 brings heavily outweighs the slight quality difference in my opinion. I got it for 5500€ (inc VAT) so it's nearly the price of a new FX6 here (7000€). It just goes to show how ahead the FX6 was 4 years ago, and how much it's in demand. Funnily enough it was the Burano release that made me go for the purchase, since it felt like the FX6 was just as good as the Burano, and even a downgrade in certain situations (weight, rolling shutter). My friend is investing in a C400mk3, and a part of me thinks that it's an amazing camera. But like you said it's nearly impossible to justify the difference to clients. I do believe we've plateaued a bit in terms of quality for price, but you never know when the next big revolutionary jump happens. I think when HDR becomes standardized and we need 15+ stops of dynamic range and large color gamuts we will see the next big demand in quality again. But HDR is still a complete mess from a colorists POV. It feels like nuclear fusion. Always 10 years away. Oh and best purchase is hands down Resolve Studio for me. Incredible value, and the way the program is set up you're forced to learn all the technical terms you encounter in video editing. Premiere dumbs down a lot of stuff making it harder to learn proper workflow and technical.

The OG C300 was a decent camera. The price did bite a lot of people starting out, but it was just right to be picked up by TV and Sports coverage productions. I remember the first time I've used the C300 - I was blown away how much different the image is compared to 5d2 and 7d. It was HD, but it was so much more detailed. I remember shooting faces on 5d2 was like - absolutely zero detail of skin on general close-up, like one big beauty filter laid on top of them, while on the C300 it was resembling working with Epic or Alexa - all the detail was there. I'd say C300 was and still is an underrated camera (Mk1 & Mk3, especially the Mk3), mostly crushed on the bigger market with bad color science and bad codecs for post (mostly speaking of Mk3 here).

Best camera investment so far: FX3 Cinema Line. Has paid for itself countless times since day one. Punches way above its weight, the image quality is comparable to other much more expensive cinema cameras, incredible value.

Agreed and this goes for all the cameras with that same sensor - for me personally it‘s the a7S III, which has the same exact sensor and image, albeit a slightly different interface, less mounting points, but an EVF. Nino

One of the best piece of gear I’ve purchased since freelancing was the Convergent Design Nanoflash. No need for a $20K+ tape deck for my HDX900. Used it as a back up for my F55. Had 3 of them. They eventually had the ability to turn 1080i to 1080p. High bitrate(if you wanted). Terrific recorder still in use today for playback.

Convergent Design was a great company. USA, great customer service, and solid built-to-last products.

Agreed, their products were exceptional. Still a bummer they gave up this market altogether.

Best camera until Sony Alpha series was an Ikegami DV7. Used it for 11 years and never let me down. Things change so quickly now that you will be very lucky to get 10 plus years from a camera. Before that I had a Sony Betacam - that was another 10 year camera!

Worst: Amazon purchased Crappy light stands. And the Zhiyun Crane gimbal. Brand new it died on a shoot. Best: Canon C400 w/ the 24-105 2.8 RF lens

Cheap light stands are the worst. A constant pain in the behind.
