I've been thinking how much effect on the flavor does each individual ingredient and its amount have. I'd guess the caramel does the heavy lifting here and is crucial, but what about the rest? What if I completely skip the nutmeg? What if I use much more orange than lemon (or more/less aromatic citrus)? Etc. etc. It would be an interesting experiment to see what is the core of the recipe, the minimal amount of ingredients which can still be used to make similar tasting syrup.

Sassafras is NOT toxic as people think! You touched on the papers arguing cancer links between rats and humans but didn't include that the flawed study was basically force feeding rats the equivalent of 9,000 gallons of root beer. They linked the cancer results to Safrole (A compound in sassafras, cinnamon, anise, etc) and banned Safrole(specifically sassafras) but no other food with it in commercially made products. Recent studies show Safrole not anymore carcinogenic then anything else we eat on the daily. Just like anything else, consume in moderate amounts. While it's been proven this is the case, the USA has yet to lift the ban on mass produced foods with sassafras, but still allows other foods with it like cinnamon, Anise, Nutmeg, etc that all contain Safrole too.
