Hey Dan, I do a lot of musky fishing. I use 80 lb braid line. It does not have any stretch, especially needed to set the hook in those toothy critters. I recycle that braided line to use as thread for hides. Holds up great and i get to reuse the line withouth throwing away when i respool my rods👍

I get not having the meat of a deer because of regulations, but if the cape was caped out clean with barely any meat i have double checked my measurements from the cape and matched them to the actual neck as a reference. And youre spot on trying to find a mount that fits exactly. I just stumbled onto your videos. I too am self taught from about 20 plus years ago. I wish i had your videos to have followed then. You do a fantastic job. I will be constantly watching your videos to help out with my process. Thank you very much for putting out such great content

That very thing happened to my sons deer years ago. He shot a big 10 point and we got it to the taxidermist and paid a 200 deposit. Then, 12 months later we asked for an update and he wouldn't return calls. Then he moved. Luckily another acquaintance who is a taxidermist told me what town he was in and his address. he let me know that he still had lots of customer racks and frozen capes but felt bad and wasn't calling customers because he couldn't mount the deer due to health issues and couldn't afford to give people their money back. We went there unannounced and were able to get my sons rack back, but the cape was destroyed. I was out 700 bucks total to get my sons deer mounted (200 lost and another 500 to get it completed YEARS later with a replacement cape). He also had my wife's first bobcat cape which was completely destroyed. We lost another 200 on that deposit, and no mount to be had for that. Very sad, but at least we got my boys deer back in the end.

I hate to hear that! At least y’all got that rack back. Some folks don’t need to go into business for themselves

Was this before you started using the Cary Cochran earliners?
@thecedarridgechroniclesКүн бұрын
Yes it was, but on a lot of mounts the ears will have to be painted even with the other liners because of discoloration in the skin and repair work too.

Happy Thanksgiving. I shot a small buck this morning and tried to get the cape off for practice. I hadnt seen this video but watched a handful of others. I tried their technique starting with the nose and lips first from the tip. Then turned it around and basically did the same thing you did here in this video. But your method for working around the eyes looked way easier than the hack job I was trying to do...>LOL. Unfortunately I may have messed up at the back of the lips because my cuts didnt come together and I may have screwed up that area of the lips not leaving skin to tuck on a mount. The lips separated from the surrounding skin if that makes sense...not sure how I managed that. Question, there was a lot of blood on the cape but I just rolled it and put it into the freezer so I can practice lip turning later. Would it be better to rinse the hide off with water, or is that a bad idea that introduces more freezer burn?

Congratulations! No don’t wash it off. You’ll be able to clean it really good the day after he’s been fleshed and salted

I don't have a fleshing machine. Just starting out. I've tanned/fleshed hides before, but not due a shoulder mount. What's the best way to thin the tanned hide by hand without having to buy a fleshing tool?
@thecedarridgechroniclesКүн бұрын
It is about impossible to thin tanned hides by hand. The easiest way to do it is to scalpel flesh when the cape is still green while doing the initial fleshing

Well they cut down the chest of my buck right in front of me!!! I was answering questions about how i wanted the meat back some young kid comes in and electric jigsaw my bucks chest!!!! uuhhhhh I was soo mad. I left, came back took it to my tax right away. He said good thing they cut it straight he said its should turn out okay. What has your experience been on these miss cuts on chests? I heard your interview on Southern Outdoorsman. It was great. Can you do a detailed video on your scouting and camera technique? I would like to hear about why wait for a complete buck loop. Also, I would like to hear about where on the loop you put a camera. Thank you for all your knowledge sharing.
@thecedarridgechronicles3 күн бұрын
I will try and do that 👍 As far as the buck loops, they are relatively small only surrounding a specific doe they are looking for that is or will go into estrous in that area. The bucks will usually make the full loop daily, sometimes twice, the advantage of knowing the full loop helps you control how and where to hunt based on the wind, access, etc. More times than not I find the majority of the sign a mile or more from the road when scouting, but end up taking the buck within a couple hundred yards of an easy access point because of historical sign along a trail that creates the loop

I am doing my first deer this week. I was wondering about power washing the flesh. If you have any tips, could you inlight me. I’m also in college so it’s constantly stop and go. So when I get to the salting step, could I let it sit more than 2 days? After tanning, could I rap it up in a bag for more than a night before I put it on the form?
@thecedarridgechronicles3 күн бұрын
You can power wash to flesh it, you will still need to split the lips and nostrils and thin the face by hand. I wouldn’t leave it out salted more than a day and night, but you can rehydrate in about a half hour and go into the pickle with it where it can stay a long time as long as the ph stays right. Once it’s tanned, you can put it in a bag with the tan still on it and freeze it. When you get ready to mount just thaw, wash, and towel dry and it’s ready
@drakeleach33163 күн бұрын
@ Thank you so much. Wouldn’t be able to do this without your channel.

Any concern about having the nose pad come out looking the same way on every mount? Also, would you recommend using the colored epoxy instead of the original?
@thecedarridgechronicles4 күн бұрын
It does look the same if you epoxy the entire pad. On noses with a lot of hair or scars I will epoxy around any unique differences and mod podge the surrounding area. For commercial work it is great for consistency and the deep texture displays well on the wall. For competition work, you would want to mod podge in stages. I use pink epoxy to save a step from a flesh undercoat when painting.

@ agreed. I also think it helped because your friend was able to take instruction well and had done “ some homework” beforehand and put his time in. That’s what I’m trying to do over the winter this year.

Are you saying your only taking in a total of 100 deer heads for the year, if so what do you tell your customers after the 100th head is taken in, do you just tell people that's it your not taking in any more business till the following year, just curious?

Recently found your channel because im trying to self teach on how to do a deer mount. Ive watched a few other channels and noticing differences between processes. My question is this; Looks like you have caped the animal and are now doing all the fleshing prior to salting or pickling, is that correct? Any concerns with the hair starting to slip ? IM guessing it will take me longer to flesh being new to it. So if I harvest a deer this year and want to freeze cape for taxidermy, can I cape and then immediately freeze. When it thaws, should I salt and pickle then flesh? Or does it get harder to flesh after salting/rinsing/ pickling?
@thecedarridgechronicles4 күн бұрын
Try to freeze the cape just as soon as possible after the deer is killed. Once you get ready to flesh it, just make sure you do the fleshing as soon as it is thawed enough to do so. It will have to be thawed completely, but you will have time to work with it as long as you get it salted immediately after you get it fleshed. Fleshing has to be done before salting or pickling.
