Hi James, today I was able to take the time to watch your Sanja Matsuri video and give some feedback. You definitely managed to take some great photos in the crowds that were there, especially on the second day with many outstanding portraits. It was very interesting to watch. I did a little research online to find out what was going on in Tokyo during those days so I could understand it. Those pictures/tattoos on the men's bodies, my goodness! What courage they have to get such large areas inked. But of course, they are very proud of it and quite happy to pose to be captured in photos. After "looking over your shoulder", I thought of similar celebrations in many countries around the world, depending on their worldview or religious rules - with very specific set rituals performed on some days of the year. For example, I once experienced Semana Santa week in Spain - the Christian Holy Week before Easter. I was traveling in several cities in Andalusia and saw hundreds of people taking part in these ritualized processions that stem from deep-rooted popular piety. And sometimes it was not without danger to be standing on the edge and yet in the middle of the “hustle and bustle”, because the people standing and walking so close together almost took each other’s breath away. Finally, please excuse my leap of thought - greetings Monika

Hi Monika ☺️ You won’t see the Tattooed guys near the main festival area since they are Yakuza members. It’s one of the few times you can see them out in public since various laws passed since the 90s have made life as a Yakuza far more difficult and their numbers have drastically decreased from its peak in the 80s and 90s. And yes, I would love to see and experience more festivals around the world! I’ve seen videos about various Christian festivals across Europe and they look just as fascinating as what we have here in Japan. I hope to make my way over there someday-hopefully sooner rather than later 😅 Have a great weekend!

Good morning, James. Thank you so much for sharing this new video. The beauty of the exoticism conferred on the images by the placards in Japanese characters, whose vivid colors are in contrast with the darkness of the night, the daytime shadows and the human profiles, all the intense cinematic mode, transports me to my Blade Runner 1 moments. I wish you a good Sunday and look forward to your next share.

First of all, thank you for handling the camera - your "steady hand" when you film from a standstill is so typical and remarkable. This gives the viewer enough time to relax and enjoy the moving scenes. (By the way: did you not use a tripod here either?) This video contains very interesting insights into this part of Tokyo with the resulting great photographs. A special motif at 0:52 or this one at 1:46 with the many confusing lines that seem to touch each other. At 3:08 I had to smile because the name "Grimm" is very well known here in my country for a traditional bakery. Maybe they have a branch in Tokyo? Next time you pass by there, you can maybe ask if they are from Germany ;-). 6:07 also a very nice picture at night with the moving train on the bridge. And I also like the film perspective at 6:34 ! 7:48 a great picture! Oh, and last but not least, I would also like to mention that I really like this "peephole" perspective at 8:17 :-). You don't see something like that every day ;-). Once again a very nice choice of background music! Hope you're well, James. Best wishes from Europe - Monika

Thanks! And nope, no tripod! The camera has some nice built in image stabilization, so fortunately I’m able to shoot all these videos handheld 😁 I would hate to have to carry a tripod around all the time 😅 And if I ever walk by that bakery again, I’ll ask! Of course, after I get something to eat there first! 😆 Have a great weekend, Monika!

Tokyo is an interesting city. In some areas, like Shibuya or Asakusa, the city is vibrant and teeming with life. However, if you walk a few blocks away, you can find communities like the ones I visit in these videos that are decrepit, quiet, and even somewhat bleak. It's a very stark contrast that is fascinating to explore. Thanks!

The music that accompanies the video touches the wistful part of my heart and stimulates my reflection. I find the choreographic idea of allowing the real background noise to flow in and out of the music in subtle transitions at the beginning and at the end to be a very welcome, sensitive stylistic device. Everything is in motion, every step of every single person on the streets and paths is unstoppable, just as time passes with every second. And here is a short, very beautiful moment of contemplation 2:07. Very nicely edited sequences and transitions from bright daylight very slowly into twilight and evening light. In between, a few shots of the “blue hour”. For example 6:59 and 7:39 wonderfully atmospheric intense color photos. Thank you for this beautiful video work and for the captured photo moments.

Thanks for the video, in which I could hear an accompanying piece of music with the wonderful sound of the cello in the first part. On the one hand, you really have to admire the aesthetic look of all those delicate cherry blossoms, and because so many people do it, sometimes it seems that the total number of people matches the total number of blossoms ;-). Here in my country there is an expression that just came to mind when I was looking at it: “You can't see the forest for the trees.” ;-) I don't know if there is a similar saying in your language? Thank you also for the brief insight into your family visit to Arizona. Among other things, I really like this 6:25 photo - this scene shows a moment of pure joy. I can imagine that it was an exciting and very nice meeting with family and friends for you. And last but not least, I can very well understand the feeling of being “connected” to the GRIII.

The weather was a little disappointing, but even with the overcast sky it was still quite beautiful to see so many cherry blossom trees everywhere. I’m not sure we have a saying, though there very well could be and I may just not be familiar with it 😅 And yes! I captured many more family photos than I did “street/art” photos while I was there. Some of my favorites where actually the ones with my brother’s dogs, the two golden doodles. I spent so much time with them and miss them already 😭

Another example of true film documentary street photography art with high aesthetic value. And the accompanying pieces of music - again very well selected. I never get tired of looking closely and paying attention to certain details. And sometimes I have to smile at your very special look at a seemingly “incidental scene”, like here at 3:55. Beautiful this flowering tree 7:47 - we can see its blossoms in a detailed shot at 8:04 . I really like the time when nature blooms. Spring has finally arrived here in my country too. Maybe you would be interested in taking a look at “my magnolia tree” that I photographed and posted in my “community area” a few days ago? Stunning beauty, even in black and white, and you can certainly imagine how enchanting it looked in color.

I've always loved these older parts of town more than the exciting downtown areas. You’ll find a lot more nature intertwined with the daily lives of people, even overtaking buildings in many instances as the gradual population decline in Japan has led to more and more houses remaining empty and abandoned for years. The cherry blossom tree was actually an early bloomer because, despite the forcast of March 21-23rd for cherry blossoms, they actually didn’t start blooming in full until April 2nd or so! My next video will feature cherry blossoms more prominently and in full bloom! Oh and very cool! I’m eager to see your photo! As always, thank you!
