Does this work if I'm using the "clear water" option in optifine? I assume I just need to make the water area 3 times as tall, as the option makes water lower light level by 1 instead of 3.

The optifine option is probably just a visual change rather than changing the mechanics of the game so it should still work

@@BoxBlair I also think it's strange. I'm using Mongster's MultiMC instance. I don't think there's any other mods in that instance that would do that. I'll just do some testing to see what works. Doesn't really matter to me whether I have to do two water blocks or six.

What game mechanic/glitch makes this work exactly?

The way the light level of the water on top of the grass at night allows it to turn to dirt combined with the bud powering of the piston next to the block to detect the change from grass to dirt, is the main driver for it working. That then powers the tflipflop to stop the water flow so that during the day the grass can grow again thus powering the bud once more activating the tflipflop, to make the water flow again.
