I come to this four years late, but you present a kind of criticism of nationalism in Miyazaki, yet an embrace also of Japan. Well wouldn't it make sense, because at the end of the day it's Home? Here in the States liberals and leftist citizens have not abandoned the US whatever our discontent may be about the government, because at the end of the day it's Home.

Coming to this after The Boy and The Heron is interesting, because that movie does have a distinctly anarchist flavour to it.

Some of the panels in the manga are straight up hate crimes. It seems like they toned it down the tiniest bit for the anime, but barely.

To be fair about the Kobayashi dub line she DOES say something like that in the manga (at least according to the official English translation of it). But to be fair to the actual anime's intention, Season 1 of Kobayashi at least is very clearly a deliberate remake of the manga's story instead of a direct adaptation, Cutting out vast chunks of jokes that go nowhere and have a tone that's later retconned out. The manga wanders about kinda aimlessly for the first 50 chapters or so before finally settling down on a direction, and the anime aims to make that direction solid from the start, which includes making Kobayashi gay. The Season 1 dub and the Season 2 production (made by different people since the directors of the first season were literally murdered) try to reinsert a bunch of that chaff back into the story, seemingly viewing it all as undifferentiated "content," which is why Kobayashi season 1 is good, the dub is bad, and season 2 is bad.

I don't mind any sort of stereotype in media unless it is purposefully hateful - people shouldn't be this sensitive. As an asian woman myself whenever i see a stereotype of my ethinicity I don't whine, but laugh. It's not stereotypes that are the problem, but how people react to this. Besides I think, that her inability to reach motherhood being somehow related to her colour is simply a stretch.

I could agree with many points. But sister Krones design is not bad. As a black person her hair and lips are not too far out. She looks good to me. Though her animalistic behavior does not.

As a socialist, I can somewhat empathize with Miyazaki's relationship with Japan. I don't hate America--I hate things my country does, I hate systems it has in place, and I hate people within it. But I don't hate America; America is just a place. Somewhere people live, like anywhere else. Home, for myself and millions of others. Nobody wants to hate their home, they just want it to be better. Through socialism, I think America could become better, and inspire people. That's the kind of home I want to live in, not just tear down and resent.

I have this too with The Netherlands. I have always lived in small villages. As a kid, I loved my country, as a teen I began to hate it, and as an adult I started to see that there's more to this county and my national identity than capitalism, colonialism and the horrors my country have been and still is responsible for. It's like looking at the river, and seeing how all the villages and how people live there are defined by it. For the majority of time, it were only the rich and powerful committing those crimes and benefitting from it. Which means that we can also exist without them.
