I honestly hate the stereotype that Yuri is basically lesbian porn, especially the idea it's only made for men. As a girl who loves Yuri and uses it as a genuine genre to tell stories, such as one I wrote about two women who initially use each other to comfort each other in a time if crisis inly to fall in love, and who has seen both amazing Yuri anime that genuinely talk about the struggles of being a lesbian and cheap anime that just use Yuri as fetish fuel. I honestly want more Yuri (and Yaoi) anime that treat this as a normal, healthy thing that is no different from straight relationships. I don't like it when Yuri or Yaoi sexualize or fetishize homosexual couples instead of treating it as a normal thing. I still love Yuri, that's not gonna change. But outside of comedies like Yuru Yuri I've never liked when people use lesbian couples as either jokes or as something "sexual"

I cannot help but think that people who told you that are very weird... First of all, for telling you what YOU are supposed to like. Secondly, for assuming that bisexual and lesbian women who like anime should not be excited to see a female/female romance in anime (especially while there used to be such a total lack of representation of such relationships in other media). And should instead watch yaoi which is traditionally a genre made by and for straight women. And thirdly, for saying that yaoi is all soft and gentle. I am not a fan of yaoi, so I cannot claim I am an expert. But those yaoi anime I happened to stumble upon all had some issues with consent or abusive relationships, up to rape. And I often heard that this is actually one of the tropes in yaoi, so it happens a lot, and many people (especially those in the LGBTQ+ community) point it out as one of the most negative things about yaoi.

I absolutely love romance!! Yuri has a special place as it is hard to get western literature portraying female love. I'm bi so reading Yuri is a great way to relate to some of the females romantic feelings which I find more reliable than other sources! I remember the young days when I crushed on my best friend from middle school (high school in Aus) and it just reminds me how pure my feelings towards girls are and that they aren't something to dislike about myself. Plus they are all generally couple goals squeee so cute!

It frustrates me also. I don't mind using the term 'yuri' or 'girls love' at all because the terms are extremely simple and easy to recall. Shoujo-ai not only further divides the yuri genre for silly reasons, but makes it harder to find more girls-love works AND can cause fragmentation of the fanbase, making people think that Shoujo-ai is only 'yuribait' and has no actual same-sex content. Can you imagine how difficult it is trying to convince someone that a work like Revolutionary Girl Utena or Kobayashi's Dragon Maid isn't Yuri just because the characters aren't 'finger-blasting' each other? It causes the same kind of confusion that metalheads cause when you have 'Symphonic Death Metal' and 'Melodic Death Metal' that comes down more to just splitting hairs then actually defining the larger genre of heavier metal. Not to mention that the term Shoujo-ai could be very confusing for a newcomer to the world of anime/manga, as the term could easily be confused with just 'shoujo', which is a demographic target and/or a term referring to females in general, or 'Mahou Shoujo', which overlaps but are definitely not the same.

I'm glad to see more yuri that delve into sex. The timid romance of most anime just isn't that engaging after a while. Sono Hanabira is a great example of yuri that's willing to get serious without feeling pandering to a male's idea of lesbianism. That said, so many yuri have this "delicate flower" aesthetic, it'd be nice to see that branch out a bit. More aggression or dominance would be refreshing. I wanna see a yuri romance that makes me cry. I haven't had that happen yet. Citrus' anime was fun, but a lot of the conflict seemed forced or silly. Misunderstandings and miscommunications preventing an obvious love from flourishing. How about a more classic story of a girl going on a journey to reunite with her long lost girlfriend or something?

Thanks for saying "shoujo ai" is bullshit. People about that shit ain't true yuri cult. One misconception you should've included since it might turn some people off: "Yuri" does not refer to "lesbian" stories. Part of this is due to how people view "yuri" vs "les/lesbian" in Japan. I see substantial criticism about yuri about how it's inaccurate representations of lesbian relationships, how it fetishizes femininity/lesbian relationships, etc (probably ties into the "it's all for males" myth). This is like criticizing yaoi for not being realistic in its gay relationships. That was never the point. Yuri is fundamentally a narrative genre with its own history and conventions. Like all genres, it's highly codified, and because it comes out of Class S and such, it's going to be a narrative and aesthetic continuation, even if stories are constantly challenging conventions. Most yuri stories are not written by lesbian authors. While some people have issue with that, I don't believe they have to be at all. It's not to say that yuri isn't "progressive"--I believe depicting explicitly non-het relationships is transgressive by its very nature. I just think that people are getting lost in the sauce here. It was never about realistically portraying homosexuality and it doesn't have to be. Manga isn't really realistic at all. As it becomes more popular, we'll probably see more "accuracy" in these stories, but again, that's not the point. It's about a broader kind of expression. It's aesthetic, my dude. Spiritual even. Gay girls are the truth. Also moe. Yuri subtextual language communicates less serious "lesbianism" and much more in the way of moe. NTR and Citrus seem to have given people the wrong idea about it all. NTR is shitty pseudo-yuri (her other works are much better). And the only problem you should have with Citrus is that they aren't real sisters (whoops).

I have bias against yuri, as all I saw from the genre where in anime with "yuri-bait" or rapey stuff like Citrus. But I really want to find a good yuri ambassador, but it's really hard to find the good ones, as yuri (and yaoi) are often overrated in sites where if I were to believe their ratings, no yuri exists with a score bellow 10/10. As someone who normally avoids yuri due to how fetishistic it can be, Bloom Into You is one of few I found enjoyable. No weird creepy relationship dynamics with stalkers or rapey vibes; just an honest and wholesome take on girl's love. The characters are given enough depth and characterization that makes them feel like believable people and not just horny teens with only love and sex on their mind. Of any manga that deserves to be the 'face' of the yuri genre here in the west, Bloom Into You is definitely one of the top contenders. Its no surprise at all that Seven Seas is pushing it so heavily (e.g., the bookstore I go to has massive manga collection and consistently keeps up with all the new licensed manga series, but Bloom Into You remains one of the few yuri manga it sells)

"Bloom into you" it's a good drama/serius take on girl's love. Both the protagonist are flawed, in different ways. It's good, and has a good focus on past drama that one of the mc need to overcome. Majority of good yuri manga are without "rapey" or teasing, from Poor Poor Lips to all Milk Morinaga manga to Cheery Amnesia. Simply take a good look to popular yuri manga, majority are clear of that.

Maria-sama ga Miteru (focuses on platonic relationships between senior and junior students). Citrus (Energetic and relatively fast moving yuri drama. Some comedy included too). Hina Logi: From Luck & Logic (Sweet magical girl show. Has some humorous moments throw in and a real, actual yuri couple despite being seemingly very innocent). Yurikuma Arashi (Strange series with lots of symbolism). Flip Flappers (A coming to age story where one young lady tries to find out who she really is from symbolic world of dreams with her new friend. Has some really cool visuals). Symphogear (Technomagical fighting girl series with some really outrageous action scenes and singing. There are two official couples as far as I can tell based on whats in the series/character songs and such, and some extra ship tease for the rest). KiraKira☆Pretty Cure A La Mode (Magical girl series that uses various sweets as a theme. There is one official couple here, complete with their own episode focused on this subject). Princess Principal (A story about five young ladies who work as spies for their governments. Really cool action scenes and music). Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon (A slice of life comedy about a lonely computer code worker who one night meets and saves a wounded dragon. Very, very cute and humorous. Also has a spin-off manga focusing on the smallest dragon, Kanna). New Game! (Story about a young lady who is interested in becoming a graphical artist. She joins a game development company and makes new friends and rivals).

"Hentai" is not a genre in Japan. Actually, this is just a noun that translates as "pervert." What we call hentai is ecchi in Japan. It's just that it's specified as 18+ type of ecchi. While regular ecchi without age restriction is the one you can see in many harem ecchi mainstream anime.

The figures came from listing all the mangaka I could, the method is written in the post linked in the description. The gap is because the gender for many is unknown so it could be anywhere in that range(probably around 75%).

I love how the clips are like 80% Marimite for the first half, lol. I like the fact that the term shoujo ai exists. It feels inaccurate to call a show like K-ON yuri, but it's helpful to have a way of describing the subtext of certain episodes. Similarly shows that have a very intimate two girl friendship but culminate in hetero romance I feel weird about calling yuri. You wouldn't call an animated movie like Zootopia a film about romance, because although it focuses on a sweet and ultimately loving and supportive relationship between a boy and a girl, they are not ever implied to be romantically interested in each other. I think similarly it's a bit hasty to call a show about two girls in an intimate friendship a yuri. When I watch a show that I've heard is yuri it's always annoying when neither character is actually explicitly gay or attracted to the other one. Intimate two girl friendships and two girls dating are wildly different things in the real world so it makes sense to have the distinction in fiction as well. It would feel cheap to slap a yuri label on something like Hibiki Euphonium because doing so almost denies the possibility of two girls having a deep and meaningful friendship without being gay for each other. Hence the term shoujo ai is useful.

I personally still uses the term Shoujo-ai and Yuri to differentiate the contents in the anime and manga, but overall I do consider them all Yuri. I do the same for Shounen-ai and Yaoi as well. It's just I grew up seeing the two terms used separately that it got stuck with me. I didn't even realized that Shoujo-ai was used in western and that it wasn't originated from Japan. To me, Shoujo-ai are basically Yuri without the sex (or at least without showing the sex scenes) and Yuri is with the sex. Back in the days if I was trying to find some girl's love series to watch that wasn't specifically just sex/18+, the only way for them to come up is by searching Shoujo-ai cuz Yuri always seem to lead to hentai. I'm just glad that the Yuri genre has improved over the years and that it's getting more recognition, but I think I will continue to categorize them like that for own self. Awesome video to debunk the misconception of Yuri genre :)
