No one else talks about yuri as extensively on here as you (as far as I know) so please keep making videos about the genre. I’ve loved every single one you’ve made on the topic, and think it deserves more spotlight in the community. Especially judging from the fact that a good amount of people probably weren’t familiar with its roots until now. It’s an under-appreciated genre. :’)

Kyla Clarp ...Citrus isn’t the kind of anime I want to rep modern yuri tho. It’s not the worst of the bunch, but a good amount of the lesbians I’ve spoken with (also, myself) really don’t care much for it. It doesn’t have a lot of why we find yuri so appealing in the first place. Right now, I’d find Hibike Euphonium to be more representative of the genre’s strong points than Citrus. I agree wholeheartedly that Citrus has done a lot in expanding the genre’s visibility in the west though, and will continue to do so through the anime. Which makes further discussion of the genre all the more important imo.

I do not think that Hibike is yuri, as much as I want it to become one. 'Queer baiting' is the second name of Kyoto Animation. Yuri narratives are usually about romantic female relationships, or Japanese version of 'laotong' (exceptionally strong platonic bonding between women). Hibike is neither. The famous confession scene bears almost no weight to the rest of the narrative of both seasons, and Kumiko becomes gradually more and more interested in Shuichi (freaking Mr. Boredom, of all people), while paying less and less attention to Reina. I know, they say that yuri is in the eye of the beholder. I would be very happy if I'm wrong... But it's KyoAni, man. Just wait and see as they crush and destroy your expectations. ]:( P.S. On a side note, I'd like if you could elaborate on the topic of Citrus. Personally, I've no idea why mediocre manga has gained this much traction, to the point of getting an anime adaptation. It's some sort of the second coming of Strawberry Panic.

Tropes? Usually something like "if you like girls you'll eventually die because of some extremely random shit or become parted forever". I mean, seriously, a lot of early 80s yuri manga was exploiting 'bury your gays' trope variation VERY often - with some notable exeptions, ofc, like Applause. There were some exceptions, of course. Ths 90s is basically the age of Sailor Moon and Utena.

Please do keep making vids about yuri. This vid is quite good. I have recently become interested in the genre. As a male I never paid much attention and without much thought I dismissed yuri as being something like hentai. But in recent years anime and manga have been presenting the subject and I came to realize that many of my favorite stories are all girl and that yuri is some of the most romantic themes in literature. Yuri is not porn but rather is about love and its many forms and expressions. And who could possibly be against love?

Plus this is a niche that remains unexplored on KZbin (though it's not very well covered outside of it either), so it might be a potential way for you to attract more people to your other videos as well.

You have the best content for those interested in yuri without a doubt and I would love more videos about it. I feel like the Class S genre is still in force today which is not helped by the fact that most anime is based in high/middle school and the girls are never explicitly shown to be in a relationship, just a really close friendship. And from all the anime I've seen that dabble in proper yuri and are actually worth watching, the girls never get a happy ending, ending either in death or separation. Quite frankly, I am tired of this kind of treatment and I need to watch more non depressing and good yuri shows.

I think you can elaborate more on demographics of yuri fanbase and psychology of fans (maybe discuss common stereotypes about yuri fans, like "heterosexual women don't read yuri" or "straight males are here only for porn\smut or yuri-ish CGDCT").

Great video. I love your brake down of the history. I would be so happy if you continued this series. Will always watch these. I was curious, you talked about misconceptions in a previous video and I wondered what you would consider a Yuri troop. I agree with what you think about subtext and people's reactions to it. What do you of subtext as a form of represntation? Would you do a personal Yuri Anime Manga top ten? I watched your Citrus video and agree with what you said. I remember 8 incidents of assult. One by Yuzu, four by Mei and three by Matsuri. Matsuri on Mei was my most uncomfortable. Though in terms of Yuzus reaction towards it. The second one by Mei towards Yuzu showed Yuzu as not passive as she slapped Mei and told her not to insult her. I was also curious as to weather you would consider these as simply 'stylised' because of the medium? Though I agree there was no need for it as well as the incest angle. Do you think these were employed because of a misunderstanding of the audience. I do think that Mei had some growth however, with her father and wanting to thank Yuzu at Christmas. Her feelings were hurt and she misunderstood Yuzus rejection before the Kyoto drama. I think with the face Mei made in that scene she wanted it too. Stay well.
