I like all three of them, but they aren't my favorites. My top spirit now is Keeper of the Forbidden Wilds. My second would be A Spread of Rampant Green, followed by Lightning's Swift Strike. I just love how easily LSS can smack a town down on the first turn. Taking out the town on a standard board shifts the balance of power and loss so quickly. My problem with Ocean's Hungry Grasp os the limited reach. It's one thing to have a weakness, but to be barred completely from the inland is harsh. The only way you can dig invaders out of the inland is if you get lucky with range boost cards. I play a fair bit of solo Spirit Island and if you are the only spirit, Ocean is tough. I really enjoy Heart of the Wildfire but causing blight so early and not being able to get rid of it reliably is troublesome. You have to be prepared to accept some blight, but causing more blight every turn is a hard sell. I've left the game at the end with 0 blight on an island, playing other spirits. ' m usually close to causing a Blight Card with HoTW by the end of the game. I've enjoyed Bringer of Dreams and Nightmares each time I've played them. I recently played in a game where one of my friends was palying them too. Every time they are in the game, it ends up being a Fear based victory. I'm still new enough to Spirit Island that I've never seen a Terror Level 4 victory. I can see that BoD&N would be the likely source of that, if we ever do get one. There are few spirits I dislike, but if I had to pick oneas my least favoite, it would be Vengeeance as a Burning Plague. I really didn't like that one. It's pretty closely tied with Serpent Slumbering beneath the Island.

Tip 2 is pretty misleading. There are some spirits where entering a reclaim loop is perfectly fine, like many minds and thunder.

Had the game for 2 months. Idk why I didn't watch a playthrough beforehand because I got the game and started reading the rule book. I HATE the look of the game and can't bring myself to learn how to play this game. I am sure it's fun but I don't know that for certain myself. One day I'll give it a go.

Nice video! Sometimes willingness to win can ruin the gaming experience. Learning mindset approaches strategy games differently, I think I will try to use it more often

Ooh you like all the card games that I like too. Maybe you'd be interested in Wormwood that comes to crowdfunding soon. Because that is one I'm interested in. It's a 2-4 player one that has 2 lanes, and sort of breaching like Netrunner. Also enjoyed Pagan: Fate of Roanoke. Not sure if you tried that one. New expansion or something is likely coming this year. I have purchased a French copy of Tichu (Tiki edition) that has elongated cards. It looks very pretty. I'm going to try my first game of it soon.

+1 to reading negative reviews of things you want to buy! It's habit at this point for me to filter by lowest rating on any product or service. Most of the time any issues are user error (case in point: my local bike mechanic got a 1 star review from someone who didn't bring their bike to the shop - and admitted that in their review! - but still wanted a quote). Edit: Surprised you didn't take umbridge at the fact that they claimed movement 'gets worse at night' (11:10), when it literally just swaps two of the EIGHT types of terrain, and it's actually a positive. I just played a game where I revealed a tile which had a desert on it, then the round ended and it was easier to move through it! It was a really great, thematic moment :')

I know it is old, but a quick comment you kind of touched on (and maybe rephrasing what you said...either way, I think it IS the biggest tip). The game is going to hinge entirely on card plays. That is how you cause change to the board state/game flow. Playing more cards gives you more actions and powers innates (yet another "card play"). That should always be your focus. Energy is the wall that prevents that outcome and should be managed as such, making it a very important, but secondary factor. Lastly, it should be noted that Major Powers can substitute "more plays" and are slightly transposable though not 1:1. Sometimes the energy track has other tools built into it that make card plays more effective or can even equate to an innate being certain (ie a +Cardplay effect) and there are other shenanigans, but ultimately, card plays. Banked energy is potential that isn't helping you (even in the case of events with costs, there are other ways to pay those that don't handicap you with 2-4 turns of saving energy that isn't helping you win.) EDIT: On your Slow Powers comment, that is EXACTLY correct. Take the first ravage of the game and get 1-2 blight, but treating your slows as next turn's faster-than-fasts means you are permanently ahead with much stronger powers. That was the biggest shift in my thinking from when I was new.

3:09:35 When taking either banner by force (either through campaign or using the conspiracy), you must activate the "when seized" portion on the banner. If you seize the People's Favor, you burn 2 favor (banner must have a minimum of 1 favor) and flip to the mob side. If you seize the Darkest Secret, you burn 2 secrets (banner must have a minimum of 1 secret).

2:58:09 Jacob is wrong here. It would cost the Chancellor 5 favor to exile him. The back of The Grand Scepter says that the holder may exile a Citizen by giving them 5 favor (+1 if they are the Oathkeeper, +1 if they have the Banner of the People's Favor, +2 if both. -1 for each if you hold them, -2 if both). So, because the Chancellor is the Oathkeeper, that's 5-1 for 4 favor, and Jacob has the Banner of the People's Favor, so 4+1 for 5 favor total to banish.

3:45 I don’t agree with the Christian, but I don’t agree with what you said, either, as a Christian, you should believe in people and culture and developing the culture, not nature. Nature kills with 100% success rate, and the game uses fear as power which is accurate for nature it’s not evil, because nature is destroying something that is destroying it, and not cultivating it, so you’re both wrong and right on some levels. I still love this game not my favorite and very amazing.

Like most people with a game of this type I have a good number of games. Each delivers something a bit different. Sprit Island weirdly is one of the most intimidating games I own and I tend towards the heavy. I have it set up now and it is my intention to play this for the next five times I solo a game to give myself a chance to improve and make it more fluid. It’s an amazing experience but not a game to just blast through. I suspect that’s why there are so many games! A time and place for each to suit the mood at time available at the time.

I only own this on steam. The AI is excellent and there are a ton of single player scenarios. I can see this being difficult to teach and play via physical board game. Once you know the rules it is fun, there is a steep learning curve but no where difficult or painful

Oath is my favorite board game, so I am biased but I concur with your point about - you don’t always play to win. If you’ve ever played munchkins or any rpg, you know it can be way more fun to help someone or screw one over in an epic betrayal or an intelligent move. Oath with its non linear path and player options allows this for intelligent/strategic players to truly shine. Also quick add- you can play this competitively or more role play fun style which is great.

Mageknight has nearly no player interaction combined with super long and brainy turns. It has many superfluous terrains and unnecessary magic and ranged rules. Also the day/knight changes are just another unnecessary thing. The core of the game is so great, but for me it feels like you had a WV Beatle and hande it to pimp my ride. If the game was more streamlined and had more interaction (which is a core feature for me, otherwise I play PC games instead), it would be the best of all time

The rulebook is actually very good. You don't need the quick-start guidebook, and should probably ignore it until you've read The Law Of Root (rules). Then, if you have a question about the quick-start guide, re-read The Law. It's probably in there somewhere.
