I have 2 red wires and 2 black wires on my heating box. My relay + transformer wants me to connect L2 to its blue wire, L1 to its black wire, and load to its red wire. How do I tell which wire is the L1, L2, and load wire on my box?

Yes, I would not stand on that step but rather I would think there is a possibility of catching my sleeve on the wing nuts while climbing up/down the ladder.
@billhandymanbill27755 күн бұрын
Nice video. Suggestions: turn around the bolts/wing nuts so the wing nuts are under the platform to minimize exposure to you and catching your clothing, especially when you are up on a ladder. Also, I would round both corners facing you to minimize exposure to sharp 90 degree edges that you could come into contact with.
@upgradeyourhomediy5 күн бұрын
Both are good suggestions. Since I would never be standing on the top step of the ladder I think catching on the wingnuts is likely not much of a risk for me. I also found that the edges are not sharp once I sanded them well but you can certainly round them over with a router if that is a concern. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with the community.

What type of screw was that? (It kinda looks like a machine screw, but that can't be right.) And how'd you get it into the stud so easily? Looks like you're hardly pressing on the screwdriver at all while screwing it in. Did you pre-drill a pilot hole?
@upgradeyourhomediy10 күн бұрын
It's just a regular wood screw. I did not drill a pilot hole - I think that would be too difficult to do in this situation. I guess the stud wasn't too hard but it did take regular pressure to screw it in.

Dont waste your time scraping the copper. all is needed is to have straight burless ends. My whole house is put together with sharkbites. Never have one leak and not once have I ever clean the copper. Scraching the copper the way done in video is going to cause leaks over time Do: Ensure the materials are clean, undamaged and don’t have any foreign objects in them or on them. If the pipe just has dirt or debris on it, you can simply wipe it off with a wet cloth. If working with copper pipe that has old solder on it, use fine sandpaper like 180 grit to remove it. Be extra careful not to scratch the pipe. Check that the pipe is round and free from other scratches, cuts or gouges. Look to make sure there are no burrs or sharp sections on the cut end. The SharkBite deburr & gauge tool allows you to quickly deburr copper pipe with a simple rotation of the tool once the pipe is inserted. Don't: Forget to clean or deburr piping. Old solder, debris, glue and aging pipe can damage the o-ring in the SharkBite fitting, which keeps it from forming a secure connection. Shine up copper with sandpaper or emery cloth like you would if you were going to solder. This can leave superficial scratches on the pipe that could cause a leak between the o-ring and the outer surface of the pipe.

What grit is the sandpaper you use?
@upgradeyourhomediy25 күн бұрын
It is special plumbers sanding cloth, also known as emery cloth. I don't think it lists a grit. The technical specialist I spoke with at SharkBite said specifically to not use regular sandpaper as it removes too much material. Hope that helps.

First you are not following the NEC!!! 6" of free conductor from the dead front of the box. Secong only one wire should be under the ground screw and the others should be pigtailed and finally wago are no different than back stabing wires and will cause heat and fire!!! I'm completely rewiring a bathroom and have to pull a lot of drywall because somebody made mistake number 5. Of course, they didn't even use junction boxes. Or wire nuts. Just stripped 1/2" of wire, made little hooks, hoooked them together, and taped them. It's disgusting. It lasted for ~20 years so I can just hear whoever it was arguing that it was fine... but there's definite evidence of arcing. Thankfully your videos will help me wire them properly.

I do mostly commercial. What i see most of the time is power goes to the switch box first, then out to the light. Imo that makes it easier to address things in the future or ro borrow power from a switch. Only the blacks hit the switch, with one taped to indicate the switch leg. Neutrals get tied through. I've also seen it done in residential that the line goes into the switch on black, out to the lamp on white, and the other white and black are tied together. Some advantages to this are that you know at a glance whats going to the lamp. The romex that has a white on the switch is the one that goes to the lamp, the black will always be hot because its unswitched.

It's a question I've searched the net about: "How can I renovate a basement if I've no light to do toe work safety". I still don't know...since I'm sawing, drilling, putting studs in...your example shows so little light for safe work. Regardless, I can see that we all have that same issue; thanks for posting.

Why not use a compression fitting valve? The SharkBite type O rings do not have any long term reliability studies yet.

I must be odd. I have zero trouble carrying it one handed, I simply put my hand over the side and in the recess made for that purpose and off I go. It only opens outwards if you pull that way.

I think your advice about the need to clean the old sink drain because a gasket will be installed there deserves mention also in the context of the plastic ring below each valve handle. The plastic rings are gaskets, so the countertop surface under the plastic rings needs to be clean (and flat). For example, mineral deposits might need to be removed. The bottom of each of the metal valve collars that will sit on the plastic rings also needs to be clean (and flat). Although the collars probably already are since they're new, they should be inspected to confirm. (In general, everything should be inspected prior to installation.) The gaskets should be inspected for defects too. I didn't watch the previous installation video, so I don't know whether you mentioned this there.
@upgradeyourhomediyАй бұрын
In the full removal and replacement video I do talk about the need to clean the counters and inside of the sink, but I didn't notice the silicone on the underside of the sink until I tested and had water pour everywhere :).
@brothermine2292Ай бұрын
I infer some of the instructions are overly terse. Also, the aerator should probably not be pre-installed by the factory, because a disassembly step is counter-intuitive. Wouldn't it be great if instructions include a warning list of the most common mistakes?
@upgradeyourhomediyАй бұрын
It would be great if the instructions warned you about the most common errors. As for the aerator, I think it might get lost if not installed at the factory, but if they said to remove it before installation then you would know where it is and that you had to put it back on.

Great to see your mistakes. That is the best way to learn. I recently changed the ice maker of the freezer.. the first ices were black (due to the carbon of the new filter). I should have running the water first (to clean the pipes) before installing the new filter and in the middle of the process ( to clean the new filter first), something not mentioned in the instructions 😢. Thanks for sharing. Saludos from Mexico 🇲🇽.
