I know how to windsurf and windfoil.. i want to learn how to foilkite... should i skip the twintip thing alltogether and just learn how to use the kite?
@erbartlettАй бұрын
Oh goood question. I think learning to twin tip is quite a bit easier, and you could learn all the kite skills you need there before going to the foil. Its also pretty easy in most places to buy a cheap twin tip board and sell it. The foiling skills will definitely give you an advantage, but the kite skills needed to foil are actually quite a bit more subtle and nuanced than twin tipping. I suspect it would be a lot harder to learn kite control with a squirrelly fast foil on your feet. That being said, it can always be done, it just would take a while longer.

Buying used gear you should be at least a bit experienced to determine if gear is good or bad. Even if you test it upfront you need experience to know if it’s flying good. In my experience I can tell buying used gear is not always bad. Depending on country and market, you may find barely used gear (2-3years old) at reasonable prices. If you live at a kite spot going on a daily/weekly basis you should consider buying new gear and sell it after one year.
@erbartlettАй бұрын
Yeah, it definitely helps if you have some basic knowledge. My experience is that here in the US there are some good shops that are really trust worthy that give accurate ratings to their used equipment, and beginners can trust them for a first purchase!!
@abacaxifamily2 ай бұрын
😂😂 if you are looking for used boards reading descriptions, there are no bad boards at all. All boards are jumping by themselves, going upwind as hell. All boards are perfect for beginners, no compromise! 😂😂

Yeah, its crazy, I really dont understand the marketing in the kitesurfing industry. It doesn't help the consumer understand what gear is good for them, it just makes everyone more confused.

I spent 2600 swiss francs for all my gear, almost only second hand This includes a foil kite with costed me 1100.- and a full carbon foil for 250.- The rest of the money got me 3 kites 2 bars 3 harnesses 2 boards 1 pump 1 travel bag 1 wetsuit If I had bought everything new I would have spent probably 12k My tip is to be very patient and knowing what you’re looking for without being too specific, make a checklist for every item you want. Spend some time to get an idea of the prices benchmark, depending on the year and model (and repairs!).. then you can start soaring for the good deal. Set up search notifications on your local second hand website where there’s the most kite gear available. Of course as usual make sure your material is in good condition and change your line every 3-4 years like recommended (it’s expensive)

Yes, a helmet, I found it helpful to have front footstrap worn loosely to help manage the board as a grab handle, and for waterstarts. Then either get rid of the strap , or add another if you want to jump. But must be careful to stay in control, and get the front foot out of strap before crashes.

Thank You 🤙🏼…. Do you recommend starting strapless?
@erbartlett2 ай бұрын
I did and I thought it was easier. If your foil and board aren’t perfectly tuned, you’ll want to be able step forward or backward to get the balance right. I also think it’s a bit sketchy to risk getting stuck in straps when you fall while learning. The only place straps helps a bit is on the water start as it can help make it easier to keep the board on your feet. A half strap can help during water starts, or you can just learn to keep the board in place with pressure from your feet and the pull of the kite. Hope that helps!

Thank you Evan for this great idea for storing your GoPro. I have been thinking about this for a very long time and I look forwards to testing this out! For anyone wondering. Leashing your gopro to yourself in any way is what we mostly want to avoid. There are times you need to pass the gopro from one hand to the other quickly + it could also throw out some safety issues (wrap around body part) Riding around with your go pro in your mouth for ages is not ideal. My current solution is put it inside my wetsuit or impact vest but your solution looks great. Thanks and see you on the water!

I just bought the Eagle Creek Migrate 130 liter rolling duffel. I purposely chose a duffel without a rigid back ... because i sometimes stuff it in another bag when I only need it on a return trip. The non rigid duffel is also much easier to fit into small rental cars or taxis in Europe. Only paid €150 in Germany. Looking to use it as my main travel luggage.
@erbartlett2 ай бұрын
@@Khowaiao1 yeah that’s a great choice for flexibility. My previous bags didn’t pack down small so they were the worst of both worlds, they were floppy and still didn’t pack down. That being said, if you don’t need them to pack down, a rigid bag like the osprey rolls the smoothest by far and makes longer walks so much more manageable when traveling , but it’s pricey.

My board is 90cm x 42 x 4cm and fits snug. The bag will take up to 96cm in length but the width and thickness will matter quite a bit when fitting through the opening of the duffel. Dude, I'm past this, and on transitions, but this whole video hits home. I had 6-7 sessions after my lessons and almost dropped the sport because I was so frustrated with everything. The only thing I would add, and this is location specific, but tides if your near a river mouth. The first time I dropped my kite with the wind to my back and it floated towards me because of an outgoing tide was wild. All things you learn and tools you stick in your tool box.

I now mentally check before I go out and think about if I have apposing wind and current. Its just another tool in the tool box. Simple option is not to drop your kite, but that happens when your learning. If you look at Breach inlet, between Sullivans Island and Isle of Palms off the Charleston SC coast with the sandbars, you will see.
