I had one new in 74, the fake gas crisis. That thing would go cross country for thirty bucks, but gas was 30 cents a gallon then. I liked the car but never liked the shifter in it, too long. it was very reliable..

Do most people trailer their car? Is it realistic to, local, drive-participate-drive again?
@BoostRodeo
@BoostRodeo 5 ай бұрын
We trailer since we don't keep this car registered and isn't pleasant to drive on the freeway. There are definitely people that drive their cars to and from the events. Always good to at least have a plan for a tow vehicle and trailer if you are doing that though. There's always a chance of breaking something or losing a tire in any type of racing and rally/rally-cross is especially tough on things.

The best thing you could do is do some searching and show up to an event. They are always looking for volunteers and you can talk to drivers, check out the cars and usually hop in the passenger seat for a few ride alongs. Most drivers are happy to take you out if you just ask! You will learn a ton

Is there any place to just practice driving techniques on gravel for cheap, instead of actually racing?
@BoostRodeo
@BoostRodeo 5 ай бұрын
Best bet is to find some grassroots rally-cross events. For $50-150 per event it's hard to beat the drive time you will get. If you know anyone with land that will let you cut in a track and do some laps anytime you want that is ideal. I'm still looking for that in the Spokane area so I can get more reps in between races and test changes to the car.

My Mom bought one of these new when I was in middle school. It was orange and had stripes down the side. If I recall, she had about 300K miles on it before she sold it. Near the end I recall the rust on the body was so bad you could see the pavement through holes in the floor in the passenger side. Mom loved the car because it ALWAYS started, even the extreme winter of Wisconsin. It started without fail right up to the day she sold it. Gas mileage was also awesome. It allowed her to commute 35 miles one way to work every workday for ~9 years with minimal gas expense. Thanks for sharing this. It brought back memories for me that are heartwarming.

I had one, too! Mine rusted out the same as your Mom's. I had to use a ruler to hold up the floor mat on the driver's side! Mine started every time, and my buddy and I did all of the work on the car. I'm not sure if it is my favorite car, but it was the first one I purchased, and you never forget your first!

Get to the top where you are with what you have. Know it’s possible when you know it’s possible. If it’s your dream, spend all your time, thoughts, and money on it. You can only get good sponsors when you are good at networking. Sponsors are there to advertise and make money. Get sponsors by being an investment.

@BoostRodeo

We have thought about it. It would be awesome to get a V8 or something boosted in it. The acceleration is pretty mediocre but it actually does really well at soaking things up and carrying speed once its moving. Being a baja 1000 rig that's really what it was setup to do, get going and maintain 50-90 over rough terrain, woops and washouts. The downside if we swapped would be if we ever started racing it again it would bump us up in classing.

Is automatic better or manual?
@blackoutlol2857
@blackoutlol2857 8 ай бұрын
Good question! simple answer: manual. While automatic is easier and still perfectly valid manual is generally used in rally as there is more control and at least for older cars noticeably faster.

Not gonna pretend to be an expert or anything yet just a fan of rally racing :)
@BoostRodeo
@BoostRodeo 5 ай бұрын
Honestly either can be really competitive. When starting out an automatic will be simpler and easier. It has the advantage of being able to do things without upsetting the car which is what catches a lot of new and even experience drivers. They are also faster to stay in power, it's hard to outshift an automatic. The downside is once you get really experienced you will find there are situations where you want to intentionally upset the car and break traction. A manual makes this a lot easier. I hope that helps

I know this was 3 years ago but I’m trying to track down why my pump screams at me at any speed. New pump, driftmotion pressure hose and all the return hoses are new. Res is clean too. All stock 89+ stuff. Do you think that solenoid is no good?? Losing sleep over this damn thing 😂
@BoostRodeo
@BoostRodeo 5 ай бұрын
How well did you bleed the system? getting the air out is really important and can be difficult. Jack the front of the car up and with the engine running turn the wheel lock to lock 20+ times, then check the fluid level. If it dropped at all top it up and repeat. You usually need to do this 2-3 times either letting the car sit or driving in for a bit in between. Air really hides in these systems and finds its way back to the pump until its completely out. If your solenoid is dead it could be making the bleeding process more difficult by restricting flow but I don't see how it would be causing the noise itself. If none of this works you may have just gotten a bad reman pump. It does happen.

@@BoostRodeo you reckon it’d do long term harm to it if the loop is just bypassed? I don’t drive mine hard it’s just a touring car for me. Appreciate it man!
@BoostRodeo
@BoostRodeo 5 ай бұрын
@@theowenhensley It shouldn't cause any issues at all. The earlier cars didn't even have the 'cooling' loop and it really doesn't do a whole lot. I have a cooler installed because I track mine periodically which creates some heat. Normal driving is fine.
