Thank you for the video. I have an 87 mk3 turbo. Is there a combination that works when keeping the 7mgte?
@BoostRodeo5 ай бұрын
With the 7M it should be fairly simple to run either the pps or non pps rack. Just make sure your ps pump has the right pulley. PPS = smaller pulley, NON-PPS = larger pulley

89+ mkiiis came with pps factory so the computer is already there. My jz swap harness did not have the pps plug included so I ran a new 2 wire harness from the engine side of the M1 plug to power the solenoid like factory.

is the 89 toyota cressida glx power steering the same rack? it has that solenoid on the rack. I wanna know how to run it.

Same power steering system and solenoid, I am not sure the rack is identical and interchangeable though. The solenoid operates at about .5v at full assist (low speed) and tapers off to 0v at higher speeds

I have a non-PPS with the normal JZ pump from a 1jzvvti - what I understood was that this setup with a 6mm spacer is better than a PPS rack with the same pump ? Am I correct ?
@BoostRodeo4 жыл бұрын
yes, your rack will already have the same amount of travel as a pps rack. If you add spacers you'll gain another 6mm of travel. To actually use it you will have to remove or modify your steering stops on the lower arm. You have the best setup as far as I am concerned.

Where does the speed signal Come from ? My abs light lights up since the 1jz and r154 swap. Mine is a early '86 with another steering rack, the pps solenoid comes out with another angle.
@BoostRodeo2 жыл бұрын
There is a progressive powersteering ecu in the passenger side kick panel. It receives the speed signal from the speedometer (trans output shaft speed) and is not tied into the ABS. Is your car usdm or another market? The US did not have pps in 86.5
@pimmus182 жыл бұрын
@@BoostRodeo thanks, so the abs light could be lighted up since the instrument panel swap 😅 mine is a EU version, had to swap to non pps, because the solenoid hits the crankcase, but with the 1jz ps pump the steering is too light. There is no good steering feedback at higher speed
@pimmus182 жыл бұрын
And the r154 doesnt have a speed sensor. It has a speedo cable
@BoostRodeo2 жыл бұрын
@@pimmus18 you are correct on the speed sensor but according to the wiring diagrams the pps ecu gets the signal from the dash. The testing procedure is to jack up the car and check the voltage change with the rear wheels spinning at different speeds so ther must be a signal conversion in the dash. Your pump is overdrive to accommodate the pps dropping pressure. The non pps 7M pumps had a larger pulley to decrease the assist. Your best bet is to switch to a pps power steering pump from an Aristo. The solenoid is on the pump instead of the rack, plugs in with the same 2 wire plug.

@BoostRodeo Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately the solenoid was never offered as a standalone part by toyota. Only with the complete steering rack which has been discontinued. The best options for sourcing them now are to watch the forums and facebook groups for a used solenoid or entire rack with a solenoid. The A80/SC300/SC400 racks are different but did use the same solenoid as the A70. Also RHD early Soarers should use the same one. Good luck, I wish I had a better source for you!

@BoostRodeo4 жыл бұрын
Wondering this as well, the z20 soarer pps rack was actually used in rhd EU supras pre 89 so I wonder if there are any other lhd toyota racks that would drop in. Might also be gear sets out of a different housing that could be used in ours for a faster ratio.

Years ago someone figured out that a fox body mustang rack can be made to fit pretty easily but requires custom inner tie rods and steering shaft adapter. I still have the stock 7mgte in my car and my car is an 87 so it doesn’t have the PPS in it so what would you recommend? Would the jz pump fit on the 7m? If so, how would I wire it in?
@BoostRodeo3 жыл бұрын
The JZ pump wont bolt to the 7m unfortunately. Also you would have to find a pps ecu and wire that into the car as yours won't be equipped with it. I probably wouldn't go through the trouble just to add it.

I know this was 3 years ago but I’m trying to track down why my pump screams at me at any speed. New pump, driftmotion pressure hose and all the return hoses are new. Res is clean too. All stock 89+ stuff. Do you think that solenoid is no good?? Losing sleep over this damn thing 😂
@BoostRodeo11 ай бұрын
How well did you bleed the system? getting the air out is really important and can be difficult. Jack the front of the car up and with the engine running turn the wheel lock to lock 20+ times, then check the fluid level. If it dropped at all top it up and repeat. You usually need to do this 2-3 times either letting the car sit or driving in for a bit in between. Air really hides in these systems and finds its way back to the pump until its completely out. If your solenoid is dead it could be making the bleeding process more difficult by restricting flow but I don't see how it would be causing the noise itself. If none of this works you may have just gotten a bad reman pump. It does happen.

Hey man, is there any way to delete the pps solenoid from the rack or 'bypass'? I happen to have an aristo engine in my Japan spec Ga70. Bare bones no wires atm. I will be rewiring the car and using haltech. I just saw a vid where the solenoid can be bypassed on the aristo pump, but the issue of no oem electrics to control the rack. So i was wondering if there is a way to bypass the solenoid on the pps rack. Or attempt to rebuild the really old beat up non pps rack I happen to have in the shed
@BoostRodeo3 жыл бұрын
I have not seen a delete for the solenoid on the rack but if you could find a plug with the same threads as the pps solenoid that would remove it. I plan to rebuild and swap the non-pps rack into my car.
@sayyidali5823 жыл бұрын
i brutalized an old solenoid and made a plug with it today. im actually waiting on a buddy to finish wire his mk3 to start and test this solenoid delete.. but on inspection of the valve body on the rack, it should cause no issues. the actual feel, well only when we get the test done then we will know. But yes, he could not get his power steering to be soft. 2jzgte vvti, non pps pump but pps rack. his is a ma70 with a used jza70 steering rack. so like me no useful oem electronics to get this working.

Another question: so pps and non pps rack ratios are different but travel is the same correct ? Is it that the rack shafts have different teeth design or only the pinion varies? From what I can see, the pinions of both types of racks bolting are the same. Question is if i can put a non pps pinion on a pps rack? What blasphemy would that combination bring?
@BoostRodeo3 жыл бұрын
@@sayyidali582 the non pps actually has a bit more travel as well. In a stock car both will be limited by the stops on the lower arms so you wouldn't notice it. Bit in theory you could get a bit more angle with the non pps if you cut the stops off. As for why the difference in ratio and travel I cant say. I haven't had the 2 racks apart side by side ever. @BoostRodeo3 жыл бұрын
so 8/88 is the production month/year. US 89 cars would be built in 88 and sold in 89. The answer is your car could have either. 89 was a transition year and early cars have early square motor mount subframes, yellow plug engine harnesses and no pps where later cars have round motor mound subframes, grey plug harnesses and pps. Being August of 88 I would guess your car has it but the only way to be positive is to look at your rack and see if it has the solenoid.
