That was still the old North Shore Line physical plant, for the most part...and thirty years later it was definitely showing its age, worn rail joints and all.

Back when trains still had conductors. My late aunt lived a block south of the Bryn Mawr station for 52 years. Back in 1971, station signs at Berwyn said, "Berwyn - Edgewater Beach."

Back when they still had conductors on CTA L trains. In those days, North-South (today's Red Line) trains were six cars long on Saturdays, but March 20 was a Wednesday in 1991. During middays on weekdays, they were four cars long.

Crikey this brings back some memories !! I remember it being dirty,ding , smelly ( the toilets flushed directly onto the tracks and the rubbish swept onto them by the sweeper ) and full of weird people, trying to steal mailbags or old tickets ,especially late at night ! I remember that alleyway between Liverpool Street and Broad Street (there used to be an entrance to it from Liverpool Street station through a small door ). ! If you turned right at 03:52 ,where that Copper is standing with the Traffic Warden and walked past the front of Broad Street Station ,turned right and a little bit further there was a Greasy Spoon Cafe / Restaurant called the Copper grill !! Full of Taxi / Bus Drivers and Bus Conductors and LT Underground workers !! A good breakfast or meal at good prices ! A hectic and lively place ! The serving staff sure as hell earned there money there ! As I remember there was a pub on the lower concourse , on the Bishop's Gate side , and it was always full of Guards and Train drivers and when a train didn't move at the time it was supposed to and the Driver or Guard was missing the first place they would look would be in this pub . Another member of staff would be sent to find them ! They got fed up with this run - around and a phone line was installed directly from the Train Crew Manager on the Broad street side , so he could just pick the phone without dialling and a speak directly to the barman in this pub and say " is Driver _____ there ? " Or " Is Guard ______ there ? " Can I speak to him please !?" .

interesting to see how much has stayed the same 3 decades later. infact if you look under the sheet metal corner covers on 2600s you can still see the 3 stripes. they just cut and peeled the off the exposed sections. the corners are mishapen and bent up from decades of hitting trees so if you look for it youll see it pretty easily at the platform.

This wasn’t called the Brown line until later, it was the Ravenswood L. The line was in dire lack of ridership at one point until it saw huge increases in 90s/early 2000s onward til Covid hit. It is best line to take tourists IMO since ekevated most of the route and snakes through lots of neighborhoods. Cabrini Greene gone now too.

This wasn’t called the Red Line at this time, rather the Howard L, and it continued through State Strret subway and then on what is now Green line south. Also what is currently the Green Line (Lake St L) used to go south on what is now the Red Line on Southside down Dan Ryan.

After riding the Lake/Dan Ryan (Red Line) and Englewood (Green Line) regularly in the 70's and mid 80's, I totally got away from the CTA, as I drove to all destinations. I knew there were many changes in the mid 90's...name and route changes....but I had no idea of how the entire CTA rail system "inter-connected". Back in the early 70's, I would visit my cousin, who lived by the Jackson Park tracks. That really peaked my interest in the CTA Rail system....how did Jackson Park and Englewood connect? I became a bit adventourous...but not too much!!! My ridership ended at Clark and Lake. Then I met a girl who stayed way west, so then my ride extended from the Lake/Dan Ryan to Harlem. Afterwards, I started working outside of the city, so I bid farewell to the CTA. Over time, I became a watch collector. The local jeweler in my area closed up shop, so I decided to go to a guy that was highly recommended...on 29 E. Madison. This was around 2019. No way was I going to pay $40+ to park downtown. So..I got a Ventra card and took the Green Line at Cottage Grove downtown. I was looking forward to the excursion, just to see how things looked. The ride was pretty much the same until I came to the "Harrison Curve". The "S" curve was dramatically straightend out. Then I found these videos on KZbin.."Ride the Rails". Started looking up stuff, like how and when the Harrison Curve was reconfigured. Now I'm really curious!!! So...while on vacation from work, I decided I was going to "Ride the Rails" and check out the routes. First one I took was the Ravenswood or Brown Line. Loved all the twists and turns!!! Tried the Red Line..a lot different when it was the Lake/Dan Ryan. Did the Pink, Orange, but not so much the Blue, as I frequented 290. not too much to see there, in my opinion. Watching this video, and going back in time 33 years shows me just how much the CTA Rail System had evolved. Watching this brings up some random thoughts...stations looked really old, a lot of track work, and I miss those 2000 series trains!!!!! Lastly...I finally found out about the Loomis Ramp!!

This was really interesting. I only ever visited Liverpool Street station once when it was like this and remember it being dark, dank and cavernous. Many years later I used to walk through the station every day going to work, and it was light and airy, but just as busy. Although I have a certain nostalgia for how it was, from a traveller's perspective I think it became much better post-improvement.

So interesting to see how the stations have changed . My stop(Morse) still looks about the same, but the rebuilds make the old platforms look quaint, especially Wilson and Howard. Am I seeing it right that Addison didn't have a full canopy back then?
@maxwelljohnson4293
@maxwelljohnson4293 2 ай бұрын
Yes. Addison on today's Red Line used to have two side platforms where it's common for these type of stations not having a full canopy coverage. The rebuilt happened and was completed 30 years ago.

Nick did you shoot this or is it something you've found? There's no doubt that the old station didn't meet capacity needs and could be improved in so many ways. But I see over and over, particularly with the railways, that in our rush to modernise we destroy architectural heritage little thought. Over and over, from Euston Arch, to the rebuilding of Golders Green, the public loss of the St Pancras ticket office, and of course Crossrail and HS2. And of course in this video both Broad Street and Liverpool Street, which I'd say lost something magic in the renovation and which is undergoing further destruction in 2024. Very interested to hear your thoughts.
@NHGMitchell
@NHGMitchell 3 ай бұрын
Yes, Guy, I shot this. As for our architectural heritage, I feel it's impractical to preserve everything. London needs to be a living city, not a dusty museum. Older buildings are expensive to maintain and are often inadequate to meet present day needs and expectations. So while I regret the loss of the Euston Arch, I understand the need to replace outdated facilities with something newer and better.

Liverpool st when it felt like an adventure and you felt you’d arrived. Now the Southend Victoria trains pull into a dingy hole that feels oppressive and depressing. Sure the concourse looks a bit cleaner but it really lacks soul. All for putting up office blocks. They won’t be happy until the whole place is transformed into a look a like Euston.

Nice seeing the driver go at full speed!!! From what I have seen & experienced myself drivers seemed to handle the d stock much more cautiously during their twilight years - they usually just crawled along the line. Dunno whether its to do with the condition of the track or the trains themselves...

BTW, it's not obvious on the video, but there were no fare turnstiles when the subway opened. It was on the honor system. You bought a ticket and climbed on-board. They rarely checked for tickets. Years later they retrofitted all the subway stations with turnstiles.

This is fascinating. Thank god they redeveloped it though, I used this station almost daily in the late 1990s. The direct access from the mainline platforms to the tube was vital part of my commute. This looks like such a dingy rabbit warren of bridges, underpasses, stairs, and walkways, I'm so glad they sorted it out. As of Dec 2023 Liverpool Street is the busiest station in Britain, and is about to get another upgrade.
