Hey, thanks for the vid. In your experience, what is the mobility like between government engineers and contractors in the cleared space? Have an opportunity with the army, and I don’t want to get stuck in a government role if that will set me up for less earnings like you said in the video. Thanks!

With my 987.2 2.9l, when I am driving on mountain/windy roads I am only using 2nd and 3rd, and even so a lot of the time I am out of the powerband, you really feel it with using these engines, as they are gutless below ~4500 rpm. About the taller gears, I would actually say that they are geared too short. But that is far from being a problem, when compared to how ridiculous 2nd and 3rd are. It takes away a lot from the experience. Finding any kind of (performance) reasoning behind Porsches decision is simply laughable. The sole reason behind this joke of a gearing is FUEL CONSUMPTION / EMISSION REGULATIONS. There is no "Porsche knows best" magic behind this.

Quickjack manual says to put the large sticker side at the rear of the car (for rear engine). I see you have it setup the other way around, no worries? I'm planning to do an engine drop and it would be better to have the Quickjacks move up and forward (the way you have it setup in your video). This way it will be easier to clear the gearbox shift rod.

I get this comment a lot, but I swear I can never find where it says this in the manual. I've done this plenty of times now with no issues. It's a four bar linkage at the end of the day. Are you engine dropping the 911?? Or what car?
@marc-andregravel8955Күн бұрын
@DasCayman yes I'm dropping the entire engine and transmission assembly from an air-cooled Porsche. In my manual (5000TL) it shows the orientation to adopt with a rear ended engine vs front engine. I figure this is not a major issue since my car weighs less than half of the rated capacity for this model. I also have seen in a Quickjack video that you can turn the lifts 90 degrees to raise the car!
@DasCaymanКүн бұрын
@@marc-andregravel8955 Yes this is both correct! I hope you have enough lift height to drop the engine and transmission... Don't forget about the engine cart height that you'll be dropping the assembly on and then rolling it out from under the car :) Good on you for tackling the job!

I, as with a lot of people, are on the fence about getting an Emira or a Porsche, perhaps the 987 or a 718, so I'm curious to know how the two compare. A lot of people have said that the Emira is better, but I haven't really seen them drive the wheels off of it like you do (how I would "1% of the time :)").

I own a 987.1 Boxster S. Really enjoy your videos, but I don't agree with your opinion on the gearing. In stock form, the car runs up to 45 mph in first, 75 in second, 105 in third, and 130 in fourth, 156 in fifth, and 183 in sixth. The car doesn't have enough juice to ever get to 183. I understand these gears might work great on the Autobahn or tracks with long straights and turns. But for ideal street driving across the world where 90% of the Caymans/Boxsters will spend majority of their time, these gear ratios should be 10-15% shorter. I don't want to hit triple digits at the top of 3rd, I don't enjoy taking slow corners in 2nd gear where the car is not in the meat of it's powerband, and I don't want to shift into 1st in slow corners risking transmission/engine damage. I know I can go buy a Miata, but I want to enjoy wringing out the flat 6s and listening to that soundtrack. I just want to be able to use 2nd and 3rd gear fully on empty backroads at somewhat reasonable speeds, but not possible with current gearing
@DasCayman3 күн бұрын
If I may...the issue that most people have with these cars is a legal one, which, is a fair concern. But these cars are geared AOK for the engine, chassis, tires, limit of grip and the backroads they are driven on. The driver in my videos :) uses gears 1-5 on these roads every time the car gets taken out. I even find myself short shifting in 3rd to 4th to stay in power band / torque curve. I personally feel like I'm shifting all-the-time in these cars and just have never thought once about the gears. My only wish would be a super tall 6th so that I can commute on the highway at 90mph and not be screaming at 4500rpm... I appreciate the feedback though and support you've given on my videos :) I'm sure you've seen this video... but you can see how all the gears are used all the time, even down to 1st... kzbin.info/www/bejne/on3Rk2SYerWLl8k
@findingrush3 күн бұрын
@@DasCayman Fair statements and I agree with you about the 6th gear, even at 75MPH, the engine is turning at 3200RPM, it should be in the mid to low 2s IMO. Objectively, you are right, the gearing serves all purposes well. But subjectively, I think a lot of people like myself prefer shorter gears from 1-4 atleast. Your car is modified heavily and is that much better than a stock motor and looks to have good TQ starting at 3500RPM, so you have useable hp/tq in the mid range. Those of us with stock engines have to keep the engine above 5K RPM to really wake it up and that's hard to do on slower roads without shifting into 1st. Kudos to your driving skill and confidence, but most people will not even wring out 3rd gear on back roads as it hits 105
@DasCayman3 күн бұрын
@@findingrush I hear you. And for me it's never about the speed, but just trying to exploit the car's chassis and grip limits (ish). It's why I want to buy an old 912 now so that I'm not going as fast when it gets driven... I had the chance to buy a Spyder RS at MSRP... and I said... what the F*CK am I gonna do with this car? Go even faster on my backrods!?!
@findingrush3 күн бұрын
@@DasCayman You're right, as good as the Spyder RS is, to try and exploit its limit on the steets would be madness. Must have been hard to give that up at MSRP though. I am all about the sensation of speed and sound over the actual speed as well. Exploiting the car is why everyone talks about the shorter gears because we want to exploit the engine and chassis dynamics at lower speeds, not Miata level slow, but that's why I said 10-15% shorter. That would result in 1st at 40mph, 2nd at 65mph, 3rd around 90mph, 4th and above can be triple digits. This gearing would actually make the stock car accelerate faster and make it a lot more fun for back roads without sacrificing daily duties.

100%. Money DOES buy happiness especially in the form of basic life needs, necessities and maybe some hobbies our being able to afford to go on a simple vacation. Without that money, you'd be stressed TF out. Once you hit a certain income level though, more money doesn't buy more happiness, though. Once you get money, you learn what's really important in life... people... relationships... friends... family... (at least for me). I never had those things growing up.

I remember when Matt Farah made Deman famous with the 2-5 gearset exchange for his Boxster. Unless you are going track only, the only gear that needs changing is second. VW has been doing this for years. 1-2 are short, 3-4-5-6 are long. Or you could do what I did. Buy the 718 GTS 2.5. It's amazing how the torque of a turbo will make you forget about tall gearing.
@DasCayman3 күн бұрын
Even in my 2011 3.4L non-turbo I find myself short shifting to stay in the torque band. I boil all this down to people don't know how to drive and just want to find something to blame. I've never had an issue with the gearing. I did notice that on the new GT3 they shortened the final drive ratio by ~15%. If anything the taller gears lets you stay in the power longer, not need to shift, and focus on the lap / times easier. There's no power struggle in the gearing so I find no need to shorten them. Although that gearset from DeMan would be fun, no doubt, it's just not needed. I never drive these cars and think "gearing too long, junk" like so many journalists claim.
