The school system in germany has always been bad. It sucked when I went to school 25 years ago and it sucks now because pretty much nothing has changed. My niece had "some kind of IT classes" (you can't really call this IT anymore) where they actually use computers with big ass CRT's and Win98. She showed me some worksheets they got as homework. I've felt like reading something out of a 70's science book. Covid pretty much exposed how far we're behind in digitalization. before covid you've had to have some cash on you no matter what because it wasn't for granted that you could pay with card of phone. since then this changed completely and you can pretty much buy everything using card or phone now. So once we get going we're actually really fast in adapting. But school equipment is just as bad as it was in the early 90's. It's embarrassing.

As a German I prefer manual gear as well. Automatic is like losing control. So maybe this is a psychological thing. Germans want to keep control over things. With manual drive you have control over perfect acceleration, gas usage and the car itself. We also hate automatic curve lights and everything that is patronizing us. The driver should have control and command, not a machine.

Not sure about the statue at 8:25 but I think it´s king Barbarossa (or Redbeard) who is believed to raise from the dead one day to fight the final war of mankind.

I live in a City. If its a distance of only 20 mins walk, i can either take the bus, the underground or my feet. Finding a parking spot would take way longer and would be much more expensive. And even if there was a space sumwhere around the location, im headding for, i would have to walk a few mins. So... whats the point in using a car?

The teachers recommendation drove me simple, to be fair... Even though my kid has an IQ of 120, her teacher refused to let her go to grammar school. We went to the headmaster of the grammarschool she wanted to attend and he decided to take her as a pupil. Now she is in her 9th year and doing really good. The other one is about to do her a Level exam next year. Shell be only 17 then, which means, she cant go to university as she can neither drive, nor sign any contract of any kind Also its not the parents that have the final say, but the headmaster of the new secondary school. Depending on the primary school teachers recommendation, he/she can decide, whether or not your child will be accepted.

"Most food shops are open, but they close earlier ..." Yes, this used to be called "Friday". Nowadays everyone seems to be urged to open on Saturday, so Friday often is like any other work day. Hence your description is for "Saturday" - except for bigger stores. Does nobody have "weekend" outside of germany? Concerning speed limits, they are just talking nonsense. "120 to 30 in 10 seconds" ... Not if you're looking for these things called .... "the signs"! Bath rooms ... if you don't want to pay, you will likely find a location without. When you're in a bar or at a restaurant or concert or whatever, bathrooms are usually free. I paid for going to a toilet like 5 times in the last 10 years. Left Lane ... it's for overtaking. You can overtake let's say at 100 to 150 km/h, depending on the number of lanes, traffic density and so on. If you're at 120-150, you have plenty of time to get out of the way of someone faster, even if you forget to switch lanes. Of course there are some asshole car lovers, who try to force you out of their way. But it's not like you're in life danger every freaking time you drive on the Autobahn. Don't fall for these guys. If they're trying to generate clicks by american stereotype exaggerating, there is a word for this: "Boulevard news" - "Red Top" in Britain :)

As for the staring, it may be the other way round: if I happen to look at someone I consider it rude, if the person becomes aware and does ignore me. Even on crowded streets you may smile at each other without sexual motives or so. In less crowded places, let's say on a stairway or with the dog in the park, it may not be unusual to exchange a short greeting. But the more crowded, busy and hectic the situation is, the more awkward this becomes. So it totally depends on context.

You asked for the 20-minute-walk: I sometimes even walk more than that. But if I know beforehand, I'll take my bike with me or take the bus. The consequences for the world are too bad to use cars individually. The last time I walked was 3 days ago. Because it was so late the next bus would have arrived in 30 minutes, I walked 5 bus stops to not become bored :)

Yes, well - we actually have more than >> 25,000 << palaces and castles in Germany, many rivers, and even more bridges. With a total of 2,500 bridges, Hamburg is the city with the most bridges in Europe, clearly outshining Venice, which has around 400 bridges and thus only comes fifth in the ranking. Vienna and Amsterdam follow in second and third place in the European cities with the most bridges. How many islands are there in Germany? There are a total of 77 islands off the German North and Baltic Sea coasts, plus ten Halligen and an unknown number in our rivers and lakes. With the Baltic and North Seas, Germany had a coastline of 2,389 kilometers. The coastline per square kilometer of land area in this country was 6.69 meters. In comparison: In Canada, the coastline per square kilometer of area was recently 20.24 meters.

Walmart can't come back to Germany with a different plan. They would probably get a positive result the second time around, but for them treating their employees better than anywhere else would be too high a price. Other countries would start getting ideas.

I do stare when I have a crush or consider someone attractive. But in general I feel uncomfortable looking or staring at people, espacially when they know. It's not like Germans could and would stare at people without feeling anything, they mostly'd be uncomfortable too but maybe it takes them longer? Besides I hate to sit down to pee but also hate it to fly everywhere. I kneel :D

The related video you chose and comment is nuts in 90%. Sure, the Autobahn HAS a dark history in its beginning. BUT: overtaking is only allowed on the left! Getting a drivers license in Germany costs round about 3000 Euros, not only a few bucks for having a test ;) Having 3 false answers in a 30 questions test will lead to a fail of the test and gets your license more expensive. German drivers are trained to follow the rules (not everyone does of course) thats why the death and incident rates are way lower with handling high speeds. But its simple: follow rules and your'e good to go. And always... even at high speed... always count with others making mistakes.

I am not sure whether this is good or bad news but one important reason for so few people dying on the German autobahn is that most of Germany is very densly populated (so you are never far from the next hospital) and Germany has one of the best ambulance services in the world. There is basically an ambulance helicopter waiting for you to crash on the autobahn... So we pick alot of people from the brink of death who would just have died from the same kind of crash somewhere else. But there are other footnotes: One third of the autobahn deaths involves lorries (which are not driving fast obviously but very easily kill people, even in a German car...). Half of the deaths happen in areas with a speed limit and many of those in the other areas would have happened with a speed limit, too. And counting deaths per capita is very unfair because due to its location there is a lot of international traffic in Germany. So you should count deaths per 100 million driven kilometers or so.

There are many more things that could be added, but that would require writing a book. The employees were not allowed to have intimate contacts and relationships with each other, privately of course. The unions that stand up for workers' rights are part of the basic rights in most European countries. In short: we Europeans can't do anything with the Disneyland fake culture. The fact that honesty and efficiency pay off in the USA too can be seen in the success of Aldi (Aldi Süd), Trader Joe`s (Aldi Nord) and Lidl.

Dem orange roofs be clay roof tiles. Still has that natural clay color. Lots these houses be under state and unesco historic protection, so they godda look oldschool. Dem one green roof is actualy seen often on buildings. Its color when copper/bronze erodes. It gets green with time.

The guy in the shop often gives German prices in dollars. Obviously he means euro. Right now 1 euro = 0,83 pound sterling or 1,11 US dollars, just for the perspective. ;-)
