Yes, we have Heinz in Germany, but we are talking about a very different product here. Heinz Ketchup is basically tomato paste with sugar and water. Hela Ketchup still has those ingredients, but there are a lot more spices and such in it. Also, there are several different versions, from tomato to curry to garlic to spicy hot aso.

Fun fact: The father of Heinz' founder was born in the town of Kallstadt in Germany. The same town that the Trump family (as in, the ex-president) came from. The lovely thing about the whole trolley thing is, during the pandemic they kept the trolleys unlocked (not sure why, l don't think it would have made much of a difference, you're already touching the trolley all over). And they were still brought back where they belong. Even nowadays you still have trolleys that aren't locked and people keep them unlocked but still park them in the proper location.
@fenikkusu4893
@fenikkusu4893 8 ай бұрын
Yeah, my Aldi around the corner still has them unlocked, because not a single one during the pandemic was found on the parking lot or got stolen. So they just decided to keep them unlocked. A cashier told me, that they even save some time and nerves, because nobody is asking, if they could change their money for some coins to use the trolley.
@Ceen328
@Ceen328 8 ай бұрын
At the start of the first huge lockdown, they used the trolley as a counter for how many people were allowed to enter each store. That was regulated by the floor space of the shop. So smaller Aldis were allowed less people at the same time, than lager ones.

The "Kaufland" shown here is not really a "regular" supermarket with all those tiny shops in it. It's more like a miniature shopping centre / Wallmart kind of chain. Regular supermarkets don't have that (maybe a bakery at the entrance, but that's it) and a we have a LOT of discounter type shops like the "(in-)famous" ALDI. :) Also: cheap whine in Germany ? yeah, it's "easy" to get "cheap" whine when the wineyard is literally outside town (we produce a LOT of whine in Germany along our rivers) Haribo being GERMAN also results in "cheap" gummies and a HUUUGE selection... same with chocolates (Milka...)

You're asking why German supermarkets are cheaper than British? Let me tell you this story. Once upon a time was a Isle, who was a proud member of the EU. Suddenly, the people were mislead by a demon called "Farage" and his fellows called Bojo and Reese-MOG. So the people decided to leave the EU and the single market. That's not the full story. In Germany there is a 1€ alcohol tax on a 0.7L bottle of wine, while the UK takes 2.75€ tax on the same bottle, with VAT that's 1,2€ vs 3,3€. So just that tax increases the price by almost 2 pounds.

To the Germans things seem so expensive, because we have the biggest low wage sector in Europe. The latest adjustments don't even cover the inflation.
@DJone4one
@DJone4one 9 ай бұрын
It is so cheap because large quantities are often purchased. (However, the packaging no longer contains as much as it used to). In the meantime, due to inflation, things have sometimes become twice as expensive and the contents have shrunk at the same time. And because most of it is made here in Germany. You also have to add a lot of import fees and the like to the item. That's why some British companies have emigrated to Europe since Brexit or have set up a subsidiary there, so that they can get into trade more easily. 14:47 The very cheap things are mostly foodstuffs that are produced in factories of 1000 pieces or more. The pretzels for €0.29 are produced by the million, frozen, baked and placed on the shelves. 15:50 Dickmann means fat man.

Supermarkets are honestly better and bigger (although more expensive) in the UK for the most part but the overall selection of high street stores and local shops in residential areas is much better in Germany imo. The pedestrianised areas in German town centres and in the middle of suburbs and boroughs are very family friendly, full of trees and large water features that kids can climb on with a lot of alfresco seating outside all the bistros and cafes. The quality of the food also seems better in Germany. Even fast food like mcdonalds is less greasy somehow.

To provide some clarity on cheese prices: They are usually per 100 grams, not per piece. 😉 In Germany we make a distinction between goods that can be bought already packaged and goods that can be bought fresh at the counter, packaged according to your wishes. For example cheese or meat counters. This can make a big difference in price because packaged goods are often cheaper per gram than fresh from the counter.

And in Glass usually means its fully Preserved so it can be used for Weeks or Months. Fresh Stuff is generally unpackaged in the Wooden Boxes and You get a small Plastic Bag to Pack how much You want ;) Also Germany is not really that Cheap. Its just that the UK went Crazy Expensive on alot of thing over the last 10 Years. Which is not that Surprising to be Honest. Because the UK is a Major Food Importer. Even alot of the UKs Processed Foods are made by using Raw Food Imported from Europe. After the UK Left the EU. This Import became alot more Expensive for the UK. Hence why the UKs Food Prices really went up alot. Something to be Noted. Not all Grocery Stores in Germany have all of these other Shops. Most have a Bakery and a Butchery. Many also have some sort of Kiosk and Cafe or Restaurant and Flower Stores are also fairly common :) But only Big Ones like Kaufland have Travel Agencies and Hair Stylists etc etc ;)

The prices for the cheese are per 100 grams. There are saleswomen working at the cheese or meat counter who will give you as much as you want. They weigh it and put a price tag on it. you can put it in your shopping cart and pay at the grocery store checkout. (translated with google, my english ist not good :D)

Yeah all grocery stores in the US have the cart corral in the parking lots. But few have the coin lock on the carts, Aldi is the major one that does. The closest Walmart Supercenter to me has a Wells Fargo bank, a salon, and Subway. LA is the second worst place to compare prices at, worst is Hawaii. LA is extremely overpriced. It's our front wheels on carts that turn, not the rear ones.

17:45 In Germany, if you earn for excample 3.000 Euro, you only get 1.500 Euro. The other half is taxes and obligatory insurance and so on. From 1.500 you pay your flat an energy and water, car... there is not much left for groserys. Therefore it is so "cheap".

1:46 We have Aldi's here in America and they do that, Costco used to do that a long time ago. 19:13 At Aldi's which I think is a European discount store but at all these here in America not only do you have to load your own groceries but you also have to bring your own bags and check yourself out They don't have any cashiers. You said that people steal carts are they really not going to steal it just to get that dollar back? And here in America the few places that do it it's a quarter that you put in, 25 cents 6:48 The year 2000 was the last time I was in France, but while we were staying in Perpignon France, We went to what was listed as the casino but that was the grocery store and while we were there we were looking at all kinds of things and found wine really cheap, so we started looking for the cheapest wine that we could find and we found a half a liter bottle of wine for $0.05, I don't drink my friend did We went ahead and bought a bottle and she said that she couldn't tell it apart from other wines she had drank. It was in a plastic bottle with a screw on top but it was $0.05. When we went on a drive to Spain while driving there we took a detour to a winery, and out front they had what looked like gas pumps but it wasn't for gas it was for wine if you brought your own containers and there were like six different varieties to choose from and each one just had a different price on it and you'd buy it the same way that you'd buy gas.

Be prepared for food sticker shock when you come to the USA. I go to UK every other year. And when I go to the markets, I still can't believe how inexpensive your food is and that it's SUCH high quality. And again, the milk is SO good. Our milk (homogenized) tastes burnt to me when I get back from EU/UK because of how high temp we sterilize our milk. It takes me a month before it starts to taste 'normalish' back here. Wait until you go to the packie (What we call liquor/spirit stores in MA, package stores) I think they are called all sorts of things depending on the state you are in. Here our Wine and spirits are very pricey. Even cheap wine starts at about $12

If you can't get the spice ketchup from Hela, here is the recipe for making curry sauce. 500 ml pureed tomatoes, 200 ml cola, let simmer gently for 30 minutes. Then add 40 grams of curry powder, 10 grams of salt, 100 grams of brown sugar, 2 grams of cinnamon powder, 1 gram of nutmeg powder, 5 grams of chili powder. This ketchup is already ready, guten Appetit.

I am German and actually live in this city where this market is. It's an old market, that previously belonged to another chain. If you think those prices are low, you should go to a supermarket in Eastern Europe, like Poland or Romania. I was in Romania around two years ago, and if you go to the Kaufland there, it's much cheaper than the supermarkets here in Germany. And we have lots of different Bread. The German Bread Register counts 3551 different sorts of bread.

Things in the supermarket used to be cheaper than they are now. Inflation has made things more expensive in Germany, as the Euro we use to pay for things is worth less than it actually was. The red slips of paper with prices on them are things that are currently on offer because they won't last long. That's why you pay half as much. But these red prices used to be the normal prices for the items. A Milka bar used to cost 0.99 euros in Germany and when it was reduced, it only cost 0.35 euros. Things aren't as cheap as you think in Germany. That's just one example with the Milka bar. You used to pay a total of 90 euros for a completely full shopping cart and now you have to pay 150-200 euros or much more for a completely full shopping cart.

Kaufland is pretty neat. They build the stores bigger and add small "stores" that they rent to smaller buisnesses. These smaller buisnesses can then profit from the people passing by on the way to buy food. Kaufland gets extra money and the shops gets more customers. Pretty smart.
