This appeared on my recommended videos nearly (by one day) after Phil's passing 20 years ago. I had worked with Phil Gilbert and his life partner at their theatre in Farnborough, 'The Prince Regent'. My friend and I took him to the Big Finish studios when they bought back the audio plays. The Big Finish studios 20 years ago were definitely smaller on the inside! I also went to Phil's funeral, where Nick Young took the Eulogy. Phil would have loved that review. Thank you. Also he would have been bemused over the fact that his character influenced technology! (Tim being the first talking computer, which the concept was taken by Blakes 7, Babylon 5 and Star Trek - and Amazon developers wanted one, and created Alexa!) Thanks again for the review for an old friend! It was pleasure to watch.

Ok long post but here goes Under certain circumstances the colour can be recovered, if it was copied as as telerecording (kinescope in North America) by simply pointing a synchronization film camera at a TV monitor then occasionally the techniciana may have left the colour signal active, as the telerecordings were always black and white they should have turned off the colour signal because that caused a small interference pattern caused by the chromodots in signal intended for the colour dots on the colour TV screen, often they didn't turn that signal off and the chomodots remain visible and since all TVs had the same colour dots on the same place on their screen, it is possible to work out the colour of each dot and recover the colour signal, this has been done with Dr Who episodes, Dads Army and Morecambe and Wise shows

I watched the series a couple of years ago on DVD. I did find it a little difficult to follow and confusing with the interweaving of the Welsh legends. I think it would be helpful if you’re familiar with the legends prior to watching the show or to at least have read the book on which it is based.

I remember this well. I'd read the book, but like many in my part of Wales knew the story of Blodeuwedd from the Mabinogion on which this is based. I was too young to completely take in some of the story, but remember enjoying it. I suppose if they made it today it would be aimed at the 'Young Adult' market and be heavy on the FX. Incidentally it was filmed around Llanymawddwy in Gwynedd.

I remember The Owl Service, I was around 10 at the time. It totally perplexed and creeped me out. But, I had watched a lot of Doctor Who by then so I had gumption and did my best to stick with it. It did give me a few nightmares though.
@majkus
@majkus 15 күн бұрын
The book was probably the point where Alan Garner, whose earlier children's books were pretty conventional, started on a path of more demanding and enigmatic books like The Owl Service and Red Shift. You almost had to have a degree in medieval Celtic literature to catch all the references to the Mabinogion. It is admirable that the adaptation is close to the book both in story and its sense of mystery, and Plummer chose to film it in the real-life locations described in the book, when possible. Alan Garner said of the production, "I found the experience hard to bear, because characters -who had lived in my head for so many years- were now really in the valley and really speaking the words that I had written. What had been a thought was now happening in front of me."

Hi Steve. This is one of my two favourite 80's films featuring the wolves of London zoo 😁. It's really interesting to hear about those motorways scenes. I agree the film probably would have been tighter without them. It is great to see scenes where the actors corpse but it stays in the film. btw your pronouncing of Withnail is unusual 😆.

Can anyone here remember another TV show of the same genre that was broadcast around that time (1970 to 1972) where there were these children in a house similar to this one on The Owl Service that could walk through its walls? I also seem to remember them walking through a garage door in it and as they walked through the walls, they left behind this residue that looked like sparks flying outward. I even remember seeing it shown on the TV in my primary school back then but for the life of me, I can't remember what it was called or what it was actually about. Does any of that ring a bell with anyone here?

@@fburton8 Definitely not The Tomorrow People, although I happen to be a massive fan of that too, the original 70s version that is, as there were a couple of remake attempts that weren't so good. @fburton8
@fburton8 16 күн бұрын
@@JohnCashin Yeah, I knew it was a long shot. If it was shown in primary school, it can't have been too racy or scary (like Escape Into Night was for me!). Do you know if it was part of a serial, or a one-off in a series? Do you remember a countdown timer before the programme started? That might indicate it was something specifically produced for BBC Schools Broadcasting or ITV Schools Television, and would potentially make it harder to track down. Walking through walls tended to go with stories about ghosts from the past (a la Amazing Mr Blunden), but the sparks suggest a sci-fi slant. I'm afraid no bells are ringing for me, not even faint ones, but I wish you luck in your search!

Olaf Stapledon coined the term Homo superior for his novel Odd John. I believe Bryan Talbot came up with Homo novus in his graphic novel series Luther Arkwright. Advances in human genetics and psychic abilities were a big thing in the Sixties and Seventies, kids. Every SF franchise, every SF author, wrote about psionics, and the themes turned up in Star Trek, Doctor Who, Ace of Wands, you name it. All the way up to 1977, and those space monks with their fluorescent light swords.
