OHMSS is my favourite Bond movie. It sticks closely to Fleming's novel. John Barry excelled himself with the soundtrack. I loved all the leading actors: Georhe Lazenby, Diana Rigg & Telly Savalas. I think the lack of gadgets is one of the film's strengths. Bond resorting to tearing out his trouser pockets to use as gloves when he attempts to climb along the cable car was so inspired. And just enough humour to keep the scenes entertaining.

I wanted hundred percent agree with you. I thought Lazenby was actually great in it. The ski chase down to the village was also excellent and the plot was not unfeasible. No gigantic satellites being captured in orbit or man spacecraft being taken the HQ at the mountaintop being an actual place and a brief lesson in heraldry being the icing on the cake

Good movie review - thanks for sharing. OHMSS is a great Bond movie - good story & the best ending - and is definitely under-rated. I think Lazenby's weaknesses were delivering the dialogue & lack of comic timing.

Have you seen the Lazenby docudrama “becoming Bond”? It’s superb. One of my favourite films and I went to see it in a 4K cinema screening in 2022 and it looked amazing.

Thank you, Steve, for your excellent review of “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service,” the best Bond film of all time. I had the pleasure of first seeing it in New York City’s Times Square, in widescreen. Posters for this and other major films literally took up one side of a building! (“Thunderball” and “You Only Live Twice” were part of that group.) I was all of thirteen at the time. And my enthusiasm for this film has only increased since then! I knew nothing about George Lazenby or Peter Hunt. But from the opening fight and that classic line, “This never happened to the other fellow,” I knew Bond was in good hands. I did not miss Sean Connery at all, and was dismayed when he returned looking old enough to be Lazenby’s father. As you said, Lazenby brought us a human Bond; I don’t think Connery would have done a better job. Moore would have been out of his depth. Lazenby’s selection was covered in 1968 by LIFE Magazine, and the photos of those other four finalists were included. He won the part by beating up Yuri Borienko in the screen test. (Borienko ended up playing Gunther in the film.) George missed out on A-level stardom, but he has lived life on his own terms - with financial success - and remained his own man. Just two weeks ago (August 2024), he announced his official retirement from acting and public appearances. At age 84, health issues have caught up with my favourite James Bond.

@@TheChannel-001 I’ve watched your review again, Steve, and absolutely agree with it. Truly a breath of fresh air, thank you! George Lazenby got a bad rap from the British press even before the film’s release. And the US critics considered it a sacrilege that anyone would dare replace Sean Connery. Lazenby did leave because of bad advice. The flip side, however, is that David Picker, the American head of United Artists, wanted Connery back at all costs. He laid down the law: no Lazenby, no Peter Hunt, no sad ending, and back to the “Goldfinger” style. Picker was on his knees before Connery throughout the making of “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.” Although Cubby Broccoli and Diana Rigg continued to slander Lazenby, several cast and crew members recalled how professional he was, and what a good Bond he made. Hunt was proud of his choice. Whatever bumps Lazenby hit along the road, I’m glad he didn’t stick around for the crap that followed.

Great review. My favourite bond film too. Peter Hunt,s direction was spot on. Previously he was the film editor and obviously came in with a clear idea of what he wanted. Looking forward to more reviews

There was a lot wrong with OHMSS, but plenty to like. Lazenby did a pretty good job - outstanding in fact for someone with so little experience. And the theme is one of, if not the best of the bunch. I'm partial to the Propellorheads version, which rips along nicely. Cheers

This is the only 007 movie that I consider a true masterpiece. It's basically Casino Royale but with a better Bond girl, better villain, better writing and a soundtrack that's actually good. Even Lazenby had more charm than Craig's angry Bond. Sad how that movie gets more praise from the hive-minded fans.

Having read all of the Fleming novels before You Only Live Twice came out, I was confused with the direction they went in with that picture. It was fun but it wasn't Bond. OHMSS was and remains my favorite Bond picture. It had everything including a much better role for Tracy than the book. She even did some Emma Peel moves fighting Blofeld's henchmen. Unfortunately, the series went into self-parody with Diamonds Are Forever and became unwatchable in the Roger Moore era. I liked Moore in The Saint TV series. He ended up playing the same character as Bond.

the only Bond i've never gotten through - that 2nd act just stonewalls any interest I have to know what happens next, the dub is diabolically bad, and I turn it off every time. I'll try again soon as there are so many people who adore this movie, and certain bonds have grown massively on me over the years.

Agree! George Lazenby was an excellent Bond. He was the most physical Bond until Daniel Craig and he should have continued in the role. Another plus for OHMSS was Telly Savalas as Blofeld, excellent, And Diana Rigg. I recently discovered the the great Honor Blackman was also in the Avengers.

I nearly also mentioned how Diana Rigg played a far stronger character than other 'Bond girls', but the review was getting too long... She deserves a video of her own really... Thanks for watching!
