awesome lesson man, Thank you , I love the way you play, just so much more musical and artistic approach than most drummers doing this stuff. I'm gonna be working on this one for a long time. I love that you were inspired by the marsalis album. Black codes was one of the most inspiring album for me, also with Tain. So good that dude. gonna go back and listen standards volume one

@@SteveHolmesDrumsthanks for the reply. I’ve had to break down the first exercise. Writing out the sticking to try get accents in my head. Not sure if this is best way to go about it? I notice you throw four stokes in there on the left too. Anyway thanks again.

I don't think there is a Rock or Prog drummer alive who cannot admit to being influenced in even some small way by the "Professor". Thank you Neil for your massive contribution to the world of music and literature. RIP Sir!

If there was ever a human drum machine, it was Neil Peart. Practiced like a maniac to sound exactly the same way every time for each song. Quite the memory of beats for certain.

I find myself thinking of this video a lot during Steve Holmes live streams. Viewers often ask questions about traditional grip, or about a particular groove, or some other small-picture thing. But I feel like what many of those guys really need is a clinic on HOW TO PLAY JAZZ DRUMS. They just don't know it. This video offers some practical, concrete tips, but it also teaches us to think about how the drums relate to other instruments in a jazz context. For me, any intermediate or advanced drummer who watches Steve's streams on Sundays would do well to earmark this video and circle back to it from time to time. So much mileage here.

I love Neil’s setup in the 1970’s. He has a timpani, a gong, tubular bells, mark trees, wind chimes, concert Toms, glockenspiel, Crotales, a cowbell tree, triangles, woodblocks, bell tree, etc. he inspired me to have a percussive setup. I wanted get more percussion instruments because of Neil. And play well like him. He’s one of my inspirations. Thank you Neil!

Steve, bummed I missed the live version, as I have so many questions!! Like you once said in one of your videos, the Internet needs more drum video instruction, lol; there are a ton of drummers offering tips and such, but I only follow three and you’re one of them for what it’s worth, and I’ve learned quite a bit of phrasing based on what you’ve taught, so I’m grateful that you’re around here; my question today though is what technique do you use for the right foot based on to get a quick Double?? Slide, heel toe, swivel? I eat a fecal sandwich with this challenge, especially with gigs, requiring it in various songs, I could probably get away with faking it or just omitting it, but I feel that it’s necessary and wanted to get your take

Rush made me make sense. I was that weird book worm kid who was into stuff that was beyond my age group. Then I found Rush and it inspired me to learn. My destvfriend was NOT a fan of Rush (no hard feelings😂) but she watched the documentary with me in the theater and finally understood everything about me and the rest of the fans there.😅😅😅
