Out of all the guys posting drum vids on KZbin, Steve is the best Ive seen - His lesson videos get to the "nitty gritty" stuff that helps you develop a vocabulary rather than just learning beats and licks - This video is a great example of vocabulary - Steve is clearly feeling his way through this solo not just executing learned licks and tricks.

Very nice. Some of the solo really feels "in the moment" verses something played 150000 times. Really dig the flam work that Steve does here. That stuff doesn't come easy for anyone. His passion for the instrument is clear.

When you finally see someone that confirms how much better maturity and feel sound over chops. And then has chops too! Great playing!

@@SteveHolmesDrums thank you, sorry about that. I was at pasic in 05. I saw a lot of "great " drummers until Jamey haddad played. It was heavy, and mature and had feel unlike anything I had seen. You sir are also in this category and I'm glad I found you. Thank you for bringing your talent to this place so guys like me can be reminded of what matters most.

Steve in my opinion is right up there with Gadd, Weckl, Coliuata I know hes not as well known but hes magnificent

In addition to an obviously exceptional technique, what visual beauty and intelligence playing ! Flexible, ample and fluid gestures, a strike that is both powerful and nuanced ! I haven't seen a drummer so beautiful to look at and listen to since Dave Weckl. In my opinion, Steve Holmes comes closest on every level. Absolutely fantastic...

I've watched your videos on and off for years. I like everything about your drumming. I could go on and on, but I've always especially admired your left hand. Maybe one of these days I'll get even half as agile as you with traditional grip. It would really open up my playing. Thanks for the videos.

You’re still no Weckl, why don’t ya quit while you’re still ahead! -_- Serious: Steve, you rock and I can tell, based on KZbin clips at least, that your playing and musicality has developed leaps and bounds over the years - and it’s been a joy to watch. Great, tasteful solo. (Shoutout to Houseofdrumming!)

Killing as always, Steve. Production quality of your vids keeps improving. I'd love to see the camera to your left zoomed out to the point that it captures your feet and hands. Your hi-hat splashing technique is fantastic, and it'd be cool to see the mechanics involved. Cheers!

With that solo you have just become my favorite drummer sooo tasty and sooo very original your tone is unreal . Where's our lesson on Bebop and comping still waiting . Your the best thanks !!!
@SteveHolmesDrums6 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot Tom. Can't do a bebop video without playing music - that means getting some guys, or use play-along material. Either one is do-able, just more time consuming. Plus, it's a deep topic. If I do it, I want to do it right.

I knew you were a better-than-merely-competent drummer, Steve - but this was impressive, both from a rudimental and musical standpoint. I agree with dhdw1 below: you have a Dave Weckl fluidity to your playing, which I envy.

great vid steve!!. at 3:46 you do triplets with left hand.. are they bounces or controlled..? the initial hit is a rimshot or not.??..been asking those questions for a o looong time ...
@SteveHolmesDrums6 жыл бұрын
My backbeat is almost always a rimshot, the strokes that follow are both bounce but highly controlled to be played in time.
