The Elf company closed it's doors & was sold at Auction to Oil & Gas Company Sun Petroleum in 2020. Doubt these units are being manufactured anymore. Good way to keep these non poluting vehicles out of the hands of the general public God forbid we stop driving our SUVs to the grocery store or stop paying high prices at the pump. There are no other vehicles like this currently The PEBL company closed it's doors in MA supposedly moved to the Netherlands.

Does pumping the pedals trickle charge the battery? If not, why not? Weight? Expense? Both?
@popeyegordon
@popeyegordon 3 жыл бұрын
Regenerative braking on vehicles this light is just a marketing ploy. They do not have enough kinetic energy to make regeneration useful, most of the energy is wasted as friction and resistance. If you mean trying to charge the battery by pedaling, not practical. A human barely puts out 100 watts so after energy loss in friction and circuitry and internal battery resistance there is hardly anything left. Also, the type of motor that can give regenerative power is a less efficient design. A solar panel on the roof is effortless.

The layout of the chassis design is clever , especially the steering setup. The front of the body looks ok too. To bad that the rest of the body from the front wheels back looks ugly. Mostly , I don’t like the cut off the doors. I think making it look something like a short bed pick would look nice.
@popeyegordon
@popeyegordon 3 жыл бұрын
Your perspective is odd and it sounds like you are not a biker. We could care less about looks. This is for sustainable living, not fashion. Although the real fashion statement today is stopping our abuse of personal cars. If you actually tried one you would immediately understand why it has to be open for ventilation. We exercise in this small space and few owners want the optional doors. The windows will fog up. We tow a trailer if we need pickup versatility.

@@popeyegordon At least the Elf looks more refined and better looking than the Pebl, which another KZbinr suggested to me. You are wrong on the first account. I am a cyclist, but not a trike rider. I have owned nine different bikes over the years. Most of those bikes were secondhand bikes. I also gave most of those bikes to other peoples as gifts so they too can get in the cycling. I have been bicycle commuter for the past 28 years. I’m 46 and I’ve never even had a car license. The reason I looked at this videos was because my cycling habits have changed recently. I was mostly a daily commuter cyclist and a weekend hobby long distance tour cyclist. I did a couple of group rides like the STP the STV over there in Seattle Washington. Recently I moved out of the city to a smaller town in western Maryland where things are a little bit more farther apart. The area is still cycle friendly. I have recently been getting a little burned out on peddling so I thought about switching to electric. I have always been interested in recumbents. So, I thought now might be a good time to look into maybe getting an electric assist recumbent as a daily commuter.

@@myperspective5091 The ELF was designed for strength with light weight, not for looks. It has been wind tunnel tested to prove that it offers the same amount of drag as a rider on a bike with no fairings while being capable of taking a passenger or a 550 pound payload. It is the SUV of velomobiles and is not for fast biking. There are other designs for that but this one is far safer in traffic. It is proven with over 5 million road miles covered including trips up to 43,000 miles long. It is the ultimate commuter or just a great grocery hauler. It replaced my car 6 years ago.

@popeyegordon
@popeyegordon 8 ай бұрын
@@nonegone7170 They ARE a foggy mess when it is cold or when the humidity is high enough. This is physics more than logic. Think about it - our breath is very humid and plentiful while exercising, plus the sweat. Unless there is a good fan for defogging it will fog up. Even with my open sides I have had fogging at night in humid weather in Florida. I have a fan for that. The ELF was my only transportation for 7 years. I'm sure you have climbed in a car after walking through rain and had all the windows fog quickly and there you are not panting hard and sweating a lot. Only the newest cars have the AC setting to dehumidify as well as move the air.

@popeyegordon
@popeyegordon 3 жыл бұрын
@@chocolatechiclid7654 After several years of production in the northeast, and what turned out to be a disastrous design that involved a major recall when the hemp body shells started disintegrating, they outsourced to Germany late last year. The original was already too heavy at 195 pounds, then the replacement fiberglass shell made the overbuilt PEBL weigh 230 pounds, far too heavy for the legal limit of a 750 watt motor. They started offering an illegal 1500 watt 'off road' mode option just so the thing could make it up hills. There is an unwritten law of physics that a bike of this type can not weigh over 180 pounds or the pedaling effort will no longer offer a practical and enjoyable addition to powering it. Nobody enjoyed pedaling the PEBL - too may car-like features and the drivers overheat easily because it is so enclosed. I can pedal my ELF on level ground at 10 mph for extended periods without using the motor. You can not say that about the PEBL. Their sales were to those not savvy about the limits of such designs. They were sold on car features like wood dashboard, gas shock rear trunk lid and heavy rear suspension and courtesy lighting in each storage compartment. If there was a larger power limit for legal sales in the US the PEBL would have done better but that same amount of power in the lighter ELF would still let it run circles around the PEBL.
