Memorial day sale on (Robust Lathe) see details below... Sale ends May 31, 2024.
Watch as Sam pushes the limits of his American Beauty Lathe. He could only estimate the weight of the block of walnut which was laminated together with 2" thick boards-at 300 Lb. A must see video......The finished pedestal weighed in at 80 pounds. Which means Sam removed over 200 lbs of wood.

WOW, I turn massive bowls a lot on my ABeauty but I got to tell you I am impressed! Great job going thru the steps. I fully understand the tremendous amount of work!!

Sam. considering what you had to work with I think you did an outstanding job. Just getting the piece on the lathe was a job in itself. 👍👍 Suggestion, although much too late to be of any value, if this had been a ring segmented turning it could have been a lot lighter. On the other hand it might have been a much more difficult glue up. But the turning would have gone better. Don't you just love the comments from a Monday Morning Quarterback. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂

Good video! Had one similar to this last year except it was solid white ash, about the same size . Before we mounted it on the lathe, I turned it up on end and used my chainsaw to shave off the corners. Took me, my neighbor guy, my pneumatic table, and two car jacks to get it on the lathe! Good thing my PM3520C has a swing-away tail stock ... that extra 4 inches between centers was a life-saver!

That is a truly enormous spindle to turn. You need an adze and stand on it, like the wood-workers of old! ;-) Not something I am ever likely to try, but excellent work.

It would be interesting to see how the glue up was done. I did a large base for a table but i glued it as segments.

That’s a tremendous amount of work and wood! How many times did you have to go to the grinder to get that accomplished? This is quite a testament to your lathe, tools, and your skills.

Great job. Did you have any concerns about the impact a piece that heavy would have on the bearings and motor on your lathe?

Wow Sam, were you on a short list of one to receive such a task: or could you not resist the challenge? My thoughts were "poor spindle thread and live centre" Perhaps a car scissor jack would have helped with the alignment; until recently I kept a couple from the 1970s for kindred problems. Bernard.

Bernard I have never turned to Peace this large. So I’ve never needed to have a hoist or scissor jack in my shop. Getting it on the Spindle was not all that difficult just time-consuming. I needed my sweet 16 for the 30 inch round walnut disc and then I needed my American Beauty to turn the pedestal. So yes, not a lot of people could accomplish this task. it was a bit ugly, but I got it done, huh? 😬. Sam

Sam, it seems to me that your gouges aren't sharp. Maybe it is the camera angle but are you riding the bevel on those big gouges? Looks and sounds more like a scraping cut. I've turned a lot of these large spindle things and can't think of a single one that I enjoyed doing. And some of the glue ups I was provided were pretty sketchy. I always chain sawed the thing into a hexagon before lifting it onto the lathe. I bet you are appreciating the power and stability of your American beauty.

You could have used two carpenters squares to measure the diameter. I have an engineer lift that I got from Harbor Freight that folds up and doesn’t take up much space.

Sam would you agree that this didn’t need to be solid wood? I’m thinking to lose a lot of weight make it hollow or make it using segmented style. Your thoughts? Chuck
@thefish5861

I thought the same thing. That's a lot of unnecessary wood.

Yes, I totally agree, I think this could’ve been glued up differently. Not sure about making it hollow but I did not glue this up. It was brought to me this way.Sam

Yes, I totally agree. I did not glue this up. Lots of waste and lots of effort on my part to get the wood turned off.

I thoroughly understand that you didn't design this but I think you should mention to your client that a segmented layup would have resulted in less wood being used. It would have made it easier on you too as it would have been lighter. Also all the turning would have been long grain. Practically no cross grain at all. Of course this all has to be chalked up to Monday Morning Quarterbacking.

Every woodturner lusts after the biggest, most powerful lathe in the world. Able to turn logs or stumps into spindles/pedestals or bowls. But your video clearly demonstrates that turning gigantic pieces of wood is just not enjoyable.
