Fantastic French contrabassoon at the start. One of the great solos for the instrument.

Paray was then 84. This was a piano piece orchestrated by Mottl, a great advocate of Chabrier's music.

Damn, after this ... how can I continue to believe that any sounds are nothing more than simple air vibrations?

Munch's interpretation of the Japanese national anthem somewhat sounds like Bruckner. One of the best renditions I've ever heard.

I have never heard Munch do Beethoven before, this is very exciting indeed. Love his French music of course!

For all the other greatnesses there are to praise, which run aplenty, I somehow get stuck at his shaking hands with his page turner. I don't think I saw anyone do that, certainly none of his stature. Not an equal, obviously, but still a recognition that more than one person's work went into this performance. Not sure why this feels so significant to me.

Chiara, incisiva, vivace, partecipata. Una vera scoperta questo Munch

I have his Vox set of the complete Ravel, including both piano concertos. I had no idea a film existed of him playing it live. When he re-recorded the solo works for Nimbus they did not do the concertos. I heard him live only once - an early evening recital at the QEH in London about 1971. He played the Chopin Fantasie in F minor and both books of Etudes. He just strolled onto the platform as if he had just walked in off the street and unleashed his magic. He was the least flashy and most unprepossessing musician I ever heard. No airs and graces - just music. Unforgettable.

Hvala ti!
