I bought my R65 new in 1984, the last model before the monoshock. I rode the bike around Australia and clocked up over 60,000 kilometres in 4 years touring and commuting. The only issue I had was the original exhaust system rusted out and I replaced it with an after market stainless system. I wish BMW would make a small boxer again.

Hi Ian. Great video and narrative and good choice of music. Very well done. Do you find the R65 has enough power to keep up with traffic on the highways? I'm about 5-11" and 180lbs. I've been eying and R65 as a stable-mate to my R100S which isn't good on long trips, but great for shorter afternoon trips. Thanks.

@ihutch924 ай бұрын
That’s awesome! :) so the handlebars came in two varieties, there’s a high and a low. You probably have the high ones, they sweep back further. You can search for low, or low euro bars, should be able to find them. If you swap them though, be mindful of your cables, I think some of the cables are actually specific to the style of bars you’ve got. And what part of Virginia are you in? There’s a few of the airheads guys around VA who are very helpful in case you end up needing tools or advice. :)

My touring buddy and best friend( RIP Dennis ) rode one of these back in the mid to late 80's in B.C. Canada. It was well suited to him, and we traded rides a few times. I am 68 years old and a life long rider since 13, had many, many bikes, and must say the 81 R 65 was boring to ride. But it was nice to know that my friend was on a reliable machine, as he rode very, very not-so-great, and I only had to worry about his riding, not his ride.

Thanks for sharing. Wish I could make it to a tech day myself as I also have an R65 that could use attention. I received my bike from previous owner with minor headlight damage and, as usual, looking at BMW parts prices is eyebrow raising. I noticed that you have a non stock, possibly Japanese, headlight on your bike that fits nicely. What headlight is that on your bike?
@ihutch925 ай бұрын
I actually have no clue what kind of headlight some previous owner slapped on mine, but it isnt the right kind haha. I actually ordered some replacement parts for it from EME, but the bracket seemed about an inch too large for the R65 headlight parts. You might check with EME, the lens/reflector I got from them was quite affordable!

@ihutch926 ай бұрын
So I put 5 weight in the front, which is lighter than the (I think) customary 7.5. Since my bike is a little lighter and I wanted more responsive feel, I went for the 5. And I do have aftermarket shocks on the back, but only because my original ones were leaking and due replacement. I kept the stock springs and I think replaced them with shocks from progressive!
