My grandmother used to do this, and we live in Ireland! I recently found a bunch of her old books when I was helping her get something from her attic, and they were all covered in brown paper. She said she used the paper to protect them, but it also served as a place to take notes without damaging the book. Some of the paper is covered in notes and annotations!

Indian schools watching this: In India, we cover ALL our textbooks and notebooks as it was a rule that was implanted in colonial times, idk why

I’ve never had a bad experience when a stranger breaks the ice by talking about the book i was reading. When I was younger it seemed annoying but as you grow and learn about others it’s nice to make a random connection. Got a few friends from it!

They do this in India too. I always loved seeing my cousins' new textbooks freshly wrapped lol

In Vietnam, we would use pretty paper to wrap our textbooks for school. Honestly, it's my favorite thing to do at the time besides collecting scented pens, notebooks, and erasers. 😅

I’ve never heard of it being to avoid conversations, and I don’t think any normal person would try to start a conversation about it in Japan anyways. It’s most to keep the book clean.

Maybe if more Japanese had conversations with strangers more of them would meet and form relationships and have kids. That and not having extreme working conditions.

Call me normal, but I never take a saucy or gorey book on public transport anyway, I keep them for home so I'm not worried about some poor kid reading something over my shoulder and learning about the world too soon. I don't need a book cover for "Great Speechs in History." And no one ever has tried to start a conversation with me about my books.

Subtle practices such as this that are embedded in culture have assisted in creating a society that provides protection for its citizens, if only in this modest way. This gently teaches proprieties within a society quite successfully.

Lots of my mom and dad's books were protected with covers like that until the late 80's in Brazil. It's very common in older books. I wonder why it's so rare to see now, maybe new covers are of higher quality. I started my collection as a kid in the 90's and no one was doing it so I never did or learned to.
