Very nice video. I just ordered a Valoi 120 template and 3 B&W films. Now I just need the camera 😊. I have a bunch of Pentax 645 on my watch list on eBay, so I have to go and pick. I noted the difference between DSLR scans and Frontier. Fr example, to photo att 7:16. How do you remember it? Closer to DSLR or Frontier?

Well, I'm certain glad to hear that Phoenix 120 has "charm", because it does not have: Color control. Cannot do a red, just a ruddy orange. Contrast so excessive that it will make a devoted Ektar 100 user weep with frustration. Grain the size of ping-pong balls. Sharpness? "We don't need no stinking sharpness." Okay, Harmon says it's a proof of concept. What does that mean? What is that "concept" being proved? That Harmon can make a color negative film comparable to any number of others on the market? Clearly not. That Harmon can make a color film which may not be the greatest, but is very inexpensive. Clearly not. So, here's a concept they may be trying to prove: You can make a film so conventionally bad that no one familiar with it would pay more than $3 a roll for it, but you can sell enough at full market film price to make the whole project worthwhile if you can get YT photo-channel nerds to hype the hell out of it as something special that only the cool kids use.

What does it say on the edge code on the film?

After shooting this video I loaded another into mt EOS system and it does read as an 800iso. Strange that the DX code and label dont line up!
@VariTimo
@VariTimo 7 күн бұрын
@@StepsAndStoness Could be different reasons, I mean the edge code on the negatives, above the images. Especially if there is anything before the film speed. If it say GT 800 it’s Ultramax 800. But if it has a different name it might be another emulsion. If it starts with G it’s something that originates from Gold waaay back.

Cool video! That location looks awesome. Question… When I’m shooting expired film, I’m pushing the ISO one or two stops. So I’m increasing the ISO from the box speed (i.e. 400ISO pushed one stop to 800ISO). So I’m going up in ISO, I’m noticing you’re bringing the ISO down, why is that?
@StepsAndStoness
@StepsAndStoness 8 күн бұрын
Since these films are deteriorating, they're becoming less sensitive to light as they age. Adding more light gives us a better chance at capturing a solid image!
@henryIRL
@henryIRL 8 күн бұрын
@@StepsAndStoness indeed. Isn’t lowing our ISO closer to 100 taking away light? While increasing ISO closer to let’s say 1600 adding more light? Or have I got that wrong this whole time?!
@StepsAndStoness
@StepsAndStoness 8 күн бұрын
@@henryIRL We're lying to the camera in saying its a lower ISO film. Our meter will compensate for that and expose more light to this "higher" rated film. Pushing and pulling is usually also affected in development, but here we are exposing as if the film was always that speed.

This always confuses me. It would be nice if you could do a video to explain 😃
@StepsAndStoness
@StepsAndStoness 7 күн бұрын
@@diannerobbins3498 Might try to work it into the rollout I have planned. But for now let me give you a quick answer to hopefully help out! Sunny 16 is a great way to get familiar with these exposure practices. 1. Lower ISO films (50-200 iso) are less sensitive to light, and require more light for their exposure between the fstop and shutter speed. Usually used during harsh sunny days. 2. Higher ISO films (400-800iso) need less light, which is why these speeds are used for lower light conditions. You can shoot films at any speeds, you just may have to adjust your dev times, which is usually more common with B&W not so much color depending on your lab. When you push a film from its native speed to a higher number ISO you are lying to the camera and saying your film is more sensitive to light, which changes your exposure settings, but allows you to be flexible with the conditions you're in. I am always pushing HP5, a 400iso film, to 1600. But that change isn't fully realized until you develop the film. Changing the development time to longer, to bring out your images. In this video I didn't want the lab to change their dev times, so I lied to the camera and light meter so the film had "less sensitivity to light" to compensate for the age of the film, pulling it down to 200iso. And looking back at these shots, with this film in particular, I could have gone with an ever lower iso (160-125iso). Hope this helps!

It cracks me up that the late 90s SLRs are essentially the culmination of over a 100 years of film photography evolution and can produce the best possible images, but often go for a fraction of the price because of less desirable aesthetics. Perfect situation for a cheapskate like myself.
@JohnSmith-gs4zv
@JohnSmith-gs4zv Ай бұрын
It's not just about the aesthetics but the durability and longlivity. Everything with plastic gears, autofocus, motors, light meter etc. will break sooner than later. I gladly pay a higher price for more reliability and repairability.
