For that type of money I would expect both sides of the coin to be immaculate and perfectly centered with full legends. This coin doesn't meet that standard so it shouldn't command such a high price. But as you said, 2 or 3 people felt differently. Would I pay that much even if I had the extra income to do so. No. Many other nicer coins to be had.

I think you proved your point that $3,800 was too much to pay for the denarius when comparing it to the three denarii of equal quality that sold for much less 😉. Some collectors are willing to forgo common sense if they really want a coin at auction, myself included 🥴.

2400yrs old, such an amazing art, and the similarity of their inscription to aramaic, and modern hebrew is much closer than phoenician and ancient hebrew. also the words themselves. it says kart-hadast which means a new city. in modern hebrew you would say kirya-hadasha, and a vilage or city in modern arabic is still karya. and the reverse is even closer- mahanat- mahane in modern language, a camp, and in biblical meaning also were the army or people park along its voyage from time to time

I despise all these companies that are slabbing ancients; they seem so shady.
@Kornheiser1014 күн бұрын
Companies don't slab coins on their own. It's lazy "collectors" or "investors" that don't take the time. Also, sadly, people don't have to worry too much about unscrupulous sellers if they stick to buying slabs...
@steve225614 күн бұрын
@@Kornheiser10 you do have a point, but the companies imply they prove the coins are authentic yet in the fine print do not actually guarantee anything. That is what I find unethical and proves to be they are a scummy company

Interesting comments on the grading service notes. As a novice I love slabbed coins, and just enjoy the coin regardless of the grade. (The only thing I'd really care about seeing on the slab is identification and authentication.) But I can see how a person with a mind to sell/trade may have a distaste for the "gambling" on the judgement of the grading services.
